SCRAPBOOK FOR READING AND WRITING

I. PROPERTIES OF A WELL WRITTEN PARAGRAPH

Instruction: Create a paragraph for each category.

A) PATTERN OF ORGANIZATION
1. Simple Listing
Louis [XIV] was not a stupid man; he was handsome and lazy. Madame de Pompadour was his
most celebrated mistress; she was not the only one. Apart from women, be had few interests and no
desire to 'waste" his energies on projects he deemed relatively unimportant. His kind, dull wife
bore him ten children in hardly more than ten years, but she could never hold his attention. Women
were his great diversion. One followed another. The post of "king's head mistress" became the most
coveted in the realm. Father sought it for their daughters, husbands for their wives. A favorite
mistress, like Madame de Pompadour or Madame du Barry (c. 1746-1793), wielded power. To offend
such a person might be to risk the monarch's wrath. (A History of the Western World by Solomon
Modell.)

2. Description
Sunset is the time of day when our sky meets the outer space solar winds. There are blue,
pink, and purple swirls, spinning and twisting, like clouds of balloons caught in a whirlwind. The
sun moves slowly to hide behind the line of horizon, while the moon races to take its place in
prominence atop the night sky. People slow to a crawl, entranced, fully forgetting the deeds that
must still be done. There is a coolness, a calmness, when the sun does set.

3. Definition
Life is the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter,
including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change
preceding death

4. Chronological Order of sequence

Four-step method which can help you prevent your mind from wandering while reading. First,
before you attempt to read anything, look over the length of the material to see if you have time
to read it: if not, mark a spot where you intend to stop. Second, read the title and the first
paragraph, looking for the main idea of the article. Next, read the boldface headings, if there
are any, and the first sentence of each paragraph. And finally, read the last paragraph, which
will probably contain a summary of the material. By doing this, you condition your mind to 'accept
the material you want to read, and thus reduce mind wandering.

5. Comparison-Contrast
There is a growing controversy over the use of drugs in sports. Denny McLain, pitcher for
the Detroit Tigers, claims that he needs pep pills or something to keep him going, especially when
he is expected to be good 162 ball games a year. However, Dr. William H. Fowler, Jr. of the UCLA
medical school claims that studies show there is no increase in strength, motor performance, or
vital capacities. (Theodore Irwin, "Doping Athletes," Parade, September 6, 1978.)

6. Cause & Effect

I do well in school, and people think I am smart because of it. But it’s not true. In
fact, three years ago I struggled in school. However, two years ago I decided to get serious about
school and made a few changes. First, I decided I would become interested in whatever was being
taught, regardless of what other people thought. I also decided I would work hard every day and
never give up on any assignment. I decided to never, never fall behind. Finally I became an active
participant in classroom discussions. Then my test scores began to rise, I decided to make school
a priority over friends and fun. After implementing these changes, I still remember the first time
that someone made fun of me because “I was smart.” How exciting! It seems to me that being smart
is simply a matter of working hard and being interested. After all, learning a new video game is
hard work even when you are interested. Unfortunately, learning a new video game doesn’t help you
get into college or get a good job.

B) COHERENCE & COHESION

Chronological
Last year was the first time I had ever been the new kid at school. For the first four days, I was
completely alone. I don’t think I even spoke to a single person. Finally, at lunch on the fifth
day, Karen Watson walked past her usual table and sat down right next to me. Even though I was
new, I had already figured out who Karen Watson was. She was popular. Pretty soon, all of Karen’s
friends were sitting there right next to me. I never became great friends with Karen, but after
lunch that day, it seemed like all sorts of people were happy to be my friend. You cannot convince
me that Karen did not know what she was doing. I have a great respect for her, and I learned a
great deal about what it means to be a true leader.
Spatial
To the left of me is a laptop, and to its right is the mouse. Below in the cubby at my center is a
pen cup. On the left-hand side of my desk is a console phone, and in front of it lies a notebook.
There are several knickknacks scattered around the top of my desk, and a wrist pad directly in
front of me. The coffee bar across the room from my location is well stocked with coffee, cups,
and syrups. The television mounted high on the wall to the left is on low volume.
Order of Importance
When writing, your first focus should be on the main message you want to convey. Avoid focusing on
details during early stages of writing. Only after you have organized your ideas is it time to
work to your way down to more structural details (e.g., sentence building, best word choice,
formatting).
Combination of orders
Insert your ATM card into the machine. Then, punch in your personal identification number. Next,
push the button for “withdrawal”. After you have entered the amount of cash you want, push the
button for the account that you want to use. Then, collect the cash and take your card and your
receipt. Finally, count the money to make sure that the amount is correct.
