PERIOP 101
I have medical students, interns and PAs
coming into my OR on a routine basis. 
Most of them lack formal education that
will prepare them for the perioperative
environment.  My staff members are
constantly complaining about having to
“watch out for them.”  I would like to
make this a better experience for both
groups.  What does AORN have to offer?
Answer: AORN has a group of six modules
that will prepare medical students, interns,
and physician assistants for entry into the
perioperative setting.  These modules cover
the following topics:
 The Surgical Environment
 Aseptic Technique
 Safety in the Surgical Suite
 Surgical Instruments
 Scrubbing, Gowning and Gloving
 Hemostasis, Sponges and Drains
For Periop 101 customers, this “modified
course” is available right now.  Students will
have access to the course on AORN’s Learning
Management System for a six month period. 
By using this online standardized didactic
education, the facility educator would just
need to arrange for skills labs to demonstrate
and allow for return demonstration of
identified skills.

endocrine surgeon at Brigham and

Health. He is also an associate professor

and an associate professor of surgery at
Harvard Medical School. He has written
extensively on medicine and public
health for The New Yorker and Slate,
