Brickwork

Area (230mm wall) = 6.1x2.64 = 16.10 m 2

Area (110mm wall) = 3.13x64 = 8.26 m2

Bricks = (16.10+8.26) x 104 = 2533.44 = 2533 bricks

Average height = ((tan 17° x 3.13) +0.17) /2 = 0.570m

Gable area = 3.13x0.57 = 1.78 m2

Bricks = 1.78x104 = 185.55 = 186 bricks

Total (230mm wall) = (2533+186) – (1.8x2.4x104) = 2270 bricks

Beam filling (110mm wall) = 6.10x0.17x52 = 54 bricks

Grand total = 2270+54 = 2324 + 10% (2324) = 2556 bricks

Cement (230mm) = ((2270 / 1000) x3) x1.1 = 8 bags

Cement (110mm beam filling) = ((54 / 1000) x3) x1.1 = 1 bag

Sand (230mm) = 1.5 m3

Sand (110mm beam filling) =0.04 m3

Brick reinforcement (150mm wide) = ((3.92 m/m 2 x 21.83 m2) / 20m = 5 rolls

Plastering (based on a 15mm thick plaster)

Sand (230mm wall) = ((21.83 / 100) x 2.3) x1.1 = 0.56 x 2 sides = 1.12 m 3

Sand (110mm beam filling) = ((1.04 / 100) x 2.3) x1.1 = 0.02 x 2 sides = 0.04 m 3

Cement (230mm wall) = ((21.83 / 100) x20) x1.1 = 4.8 x 2 sides = 10 bags

Cement (110 beam filling) = ((1.04 / 100) x20) x1.1 = 0.23 x 2 sides = 1 bag

Paint

For (230mm wall) primer = ((21.83 x 2 sides) / (8 x 5)) = 1 by 5 litre

Finishing coat = 2 by 5 litre

Summary

Bricks – 2556 bricks

Cement – 20 bags

Sand – 4 m3

Paint – Three 5 litres

Brick force reinforcement – 5 rolls of 20m

Notes

To calculate the brick work for any given wall use factors for that specific material like sand, cement,
bricks and brick force. Let’s start with bricks, the factor used for double brick wall is 104 bricks per
square meter of area (104m2) and for single wall is 52 bricks per square meter of area (52m 2). This
applies to any brick as their dimensions fall within rang. The wall has different sharps like rectangular
trapezium and so on. That must be taken into account when doing calculations and in a case of gable
roof use the pitch (normal it’s 17° for standard houses) to get the height if u are not given the full
height of that wall. The beam fill is usually 2 brick courses above the wall and it could be single or
double brick wall so in height its 170mm. When doing the calculations don’t forget to remove the
openings (areas or volume depending on your unites) of windows, doors etc. When rounding
numbers less than 0.4 round down and for greater round up. 10 % of wastage is to be added in the
final bricks amount.

The plaster is based on a 15mm thickness for the purpose of this project. Plaster is made up of sand,
cement and water but water won’t be explained. The factor for sand is 100 square meters (100m 2) of
area to be plastered which requires 2.3m 3 of sand. The will be 10% allowance for wastage for sand.
The cement factor is 100 square meters (100m 2) of the total area to be plastered which require 20
bags of cement and allow 10% wastage for construction purposes.

For the brick mortar, 1000 bricks for every 3 bags of cement and an allowance of 10%. For sand
every 1000 bricks 0.6m3 of sand is required and an additional 10% of wastage.
