The Heating curve of an unknown substance.

This is a graph showing what would happen if you took a solid substance
and heated it over time. When the temperature is measured it goes up
and up most of the time but at certain points it does not change.

By answering these questions we will think about what is happening at

those points and what they can tell us.

1. Label the sections on the graph where the substance is a solid,

liquid and a gas?
2. Describe what is happening between each of the points:
i) A-B ii) B-C iii) C-D iv) D-E? v) E-f
3. Describe the way that the particles are arranged and behaving
between A-B, what happens to them between points B-C and
what they are like after point C?

1) Solid: A, B.

Liquid: C, D.

Gas: E, F. 3) The Particles between point A-B are closely/tightly packed with
no space, particles have fixed pattern but as heat increases, the
2) I: Temperature of Substance is particles start vibrating and move a bit away as gain heat and
increasing. have enough space just like between point B-C. After point C
Ii: Substance is melting. slowly slowly the particles move away from each other and gain
heat. The particles get energy and start move quickly.
Iii: Fusion (Solid to Liquid).

IV: Substance is heating.

V: Vaporization (Liquid to Gas).
