Hakkıdır Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklâl.
Ulusun, korkma! Nasıl böyle bir imanı boğar, Fışkırır ruh-ı mücerret gibi yerden na’şım;
Medeniyyet dediğin tek dişi kalmış canavar? O zaman yükselerek arşa değer belki başım.
Arkadaş, yurduma alçakları uğratma sakın; Dalgalan sen de şafaklar gibi ey şanlı hilâl!
Siper et gövdeni, dursun bu hayâsızca akın. Olsun artık dökülen kanlarımın hepsi helâl.
Doğacaktır sana va’dettiği günler Hakk’ın; Ebediyyen sana yok, ırkıma yok izmihlâl;
Kim bilir, belki yarın, belki yarından da yakın Hakkıdır hür yaşamış bayrağımın hürriyyet;
Hakkıdır Hakk’a tapan milletimin istiklâl!

In English, there are several different ways that we can talk about the future. The most important ones
are as follows:
- Predictions/statements of fact
- Intentions
- Arrangements
- Scheduled events
Predictions/statements of fact
The auxiliary verb will is used in making predictions or simple statements of fact about the future.
Examples:
The sun will rise at 6.30 tomorrow.
Lunch break today will be 10 minutes longer than usual.
245
We sometimes use shall instead of will, for I and We.
Signal Words
Intentions
The auxiliary verb going to is used in talking about intentions. (An intention is a plan for the future that
we have already thought about.)
Examples:
Arrangements
The present continuous tense is used in talking about arrangements. (An arrangement is a plan for the
future that we have already thought about and discussed with someone else.)
Examples:
Scheduled events
The present simple tense is usually used to refer to future events that are scheduled (and outside of
our control).
Hurry up! The train departs in 10 minutes.
246
THEME 4
A- POSITION OF ADVERBS
ADVERBS OF MANNER
Adverbs of manner are the largest group of adverbs. Most adverbs of manner are closely related to
corresponding adjectives. Although some words can be used as either adjectives or adverbs, in most
cases, adverbs of manner are formed by adding ly to the corresponding adjectives.
Adverb of Manner
bad badly
complete completely
normal normally
surprising surprisingly
However, when the adjective ends in ic, the syllable al is usually added before the ly ending. For
example:
Adverb of Manner
dramatic dramatically
Adverb of Manner
favorable favorably
humble humbly
simple simply
When the adjective ends in le preceded by a vowel, in most cases, ly is simply added to the positive
form of the adjective. For example:
Adverb of Manner
agile agilely
sole solely
Adverb of Manner
whole wholly
247
Adverb of Manner
dull dully
full fully
shrill shrilly
example:
Adverb of Manner
due duly
true truly
When the adjective ends in y preceded by a consonant, the y is usually changed to i before the ending
ly is added. For example:
Adverb of Manner
busy busily
easy easily
happy happily
However, in the case of the adjectives shy and sly, ly is simply added to the positive form of the
adjective:
Adverb of Manner
shy shyly
sly slyly
When the adjective ends in y preceded by a vowel, in most cases, ly is simply added to the positive
form of the adjective. For example:
Adverb of Manner
coy coyly
grey greyly
However, in the case of the adjective gay, y is changed to i before the ending ly is added:
Adverb of Manner
gay gaily
See Exercise 1.
It should be noted that while most adverbs which end in ly are adverbs of manner, other types of
adverb may also end in ly. For instance, consequently and subsequently are connecting adverbs. The
following are adverbs of frequency which are formed by adding ly to the corresponding adjectives.
Adverb of Manner
frequent frequently
rare rarely
usual usually
248
b. Adverbs which do not use the ending ly
The adverb of manner well appears unrelated to the corresponding adjective, good. Good and well
both have the comparative form better and the superlative form best.
Adverb of Manner
good well
It should be noted that in addition to being used as an adverb, the word well can also be used as an
adjective with the meaning healthy. The adjective well is most often used as a predicate adjective.
e.g. Well used as an Adjective: I hope you are well.
Well used as an Adverb: He did well on the examination.
The following table gives examples of adverbs of manner, location, time and frequency which have the
same forms as the corresponding adjectives.
Adverb of Manner
fast fast
hard hard
little little
loud loud or loudly
much much
straight straight
Adverb of Location
far far
high high
low low
near near
wide wide
Adverb of Time
early early
late late
long long
Adverb of Frequency
daily daily
monthly monthly
weekly weekly
yearly yearly
See Exercise 2.
It should also be noted that there are several adjectives ending in ly which have no corresponding
adverbs:
friendly
likely
lively
lonely
silly
ugly
249
When it is desired to use one of these words to modify a verb, an adverb phrase of manner may be
used. In the following examples, the adverb phrases are underlined.
e.g. He behaved in a friendly manner.
They acted in a silly way.
The following table gives examples of pairs of adverbs which are closely related, but which have
different meanings.
ADVERBS OF PLACE
250
Examples:
by the table.
in the cupboard.
at the bottom of the page.
Direction
We use adverbials to to talk about the direction where someone or something is moving.
She ran out of the house past the bank and keep going to the end of the street.
We also use adverbs and adverb phrases for place and direction:
there upstairs
stayed indoors.
Examples:
past the bank and keep going to the end of the street.
into.
Distance
We use adverbials to show how far things are:
Birmingham is 250 kilometres from away from
kilometres from Birmingham to London.
Sometimes we use a preposition at the end of a clause:
We were in London. Birmingham was 250 kilometres away off.
Examples:
from London.
away.
ADVERBS OF TIME
251
how often (frequency):
They usually watched television in the evening.
We sometimes went to work by car.
We often use a noun phrase as a time adverbial:
yesterday last week / month / year one day / week / month last Saturday
tomorrow next week / month / year the day after tomorrow next Friday
today this week / month / year the day before yesterday the other day / week / month
B- ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY
We use adverbs of frequency - like sometimes or usually - to say how often we do things, or how
often things happen.
100% 0%
always usually/normally often sometimes occasionally hardly ever never
These are the most common adverbs, although there are more. They are usually before the main
verb, or between the auxiliary and the main verb. But they come after the verb to be.
They always hang out together.
usually green.
normally
often cloudy.
We can use some adverbs of frequency at the beginning or end of a sentence for emphasis.
Occasionally
We can use usually, often, sometimes and occasionally at the beginning of a sentence, and
sometimes and often at the end. We use adverb expressions like
the main verb too.
She travels a lot very much.
Be careful with never. It is already negative not.
I never go to the supermarket with my mother.
If we are asking other people to do things, we would normally use Would you or Could you +
. Would you like to…? is also a very polite way of suggesting or requesting something,
politer than Do you want to…?
252
Can I / could I / may I / might I
If you are requesting something for yourself, all of these forms are possible. May and might are
considered to be more polite, more formal or more tentative than can and could, but can and could are
usually preferred in normal usage.

THEME 5
A- RELATIVE PRONOUNS
Relative clauses are clauses starting with the relative pronouns who, that, which, whose, where,
when.
Relative pronouns are associated as follows with their preceding noun:
Preceding noun Relative pronoun
a person who(m)/that, whose………
Preceding noun Relative pronoun
a thing which/that, whose…….
Note 1: The relative pronoun whose is used in place of the possessive pronoun. It must be followed
Note 2: The relative pronouns where and when are used with place and time nouns.
1994 was the year when I got married my husband.
Here are some examples:
Do you know the girl who
Can I have the pencil that
A notebook is a computer which can be carried around.
I will eat in this restaurant whose meals are delicious.
I want to live in a place where there is lots to do.
Yesterday was the day when everything went wrong.
* The relative pronoun whom can be used as the object of the relative clause and it is rarely used in
spoken English.
My science teacher is a person whom I like very much.
253
B- NON-DEFINING RELATIVE PRONOUNS
My English teacher, who came to Germany in 1986, likes to ride his mountain bike.
The heavy rain, which was unusual for the time of year, destroyed most of the plants in my garden.
Einstein, who was born in Germany, is famous for his theory of relativity.
The boy, whose parents both work as teachers at the school, is very hardworking indeed.
is omitted:
1. When the pronoun is the object of the relative clause. In the following sentences the pronoun that
can be left out is enclosed in (brackets):
2. When the relative clause contains a present or past participle and the auxiliary verb to be. In such
cases both relative pronoun and auxiliary can be left out:
The family (that is) living in the next house comes from Slovenia.
Most of the parents (who were) invited to the meeting did not come.
Anyone (that is) caught writing on the walls will be expelled from school.
C- NOUN CLAUSE
A. Noun clauses perform the same functions in sentences that nouns do:
A noun clause can be :
254
Everybody is sad that Billy drowned.
B. You can combine two independent clauses by changing one to a noun clause and using it
in one of the ways listed above. The choice of the noun clause marker (see below) depends on the
type of clause you are changing to a noun clause:
To change a statement to a noun clause use that:
C. The subordinators in noun clauses are called noun clause markers. Here is a list of the noun
clause markers:
that
if, whether
Wh-words: how, what, when, where, which, who, whom, whose, why
D. Statement word order is always used in a noun clause, even if the main clause is a question:
Do you know what time it is
Everybody wondered where Billy went. (Statement word order: Billy went)
255
F. Here are some examples of sentences which contain one noun clause (underlined) and one
independent clause:
:

Whether Fred can get a better job is not certain.
What Mary said confused her parents.
However you learn to spell is OK with me.

*Punctuation Marks
We use punctuation marks to structure and organise our writing. The most common of these are the
period (or full stop in British English), the comma, the exclamation mark, the question mark, the colon
and semi-colon and the others. Capital letters are also used to help us organise meaning and to
structure the sense of our writing.
Knowing where and when to use these punctuation marks in English grammar can greatly improve our
writing skills.
Three of these punctuation marks are appropriate for use as sentence endings. They are the full stop,
question mark, and exclamation mark.
The full stop (.)
For example:
1. As a sentence ender: Jane and Jack went to the market.
2. After an abbreviation: Her Mar. birthday came and went.
The question mark (?): We use the question mark to indicate a direct question when placed at the
end of a sentence.
The exclamation mark (!): We use the exclamation mark when a person wants to express a sudden
outcry, surprise or emphasize a point.
1. In a dialogue: “Oh my God!” screamed Jane.
The comma (,): We use the comma to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of
a sentence. Additionally, it is used in letter writing after the salutation and closing.
1. Separating elements within sentences: Suzi wanted the black, green, and blue shoes.
2. Letter Salutations: Dear Uncle John,
3. Separation of two complete sentences: We went to the movies, and we went to the beach.
The colon (:) has two main uses:
262
2. The second is within time expressions. Within time, it is used to separate out the hour and minute:
12:15 p.m.
The semicolon (;) is used to connect independent clauses. It shows a closer relationship between the
clauses than a full stop would show.
For example: John was hurt; he knew she only said it to upset him.
Capital Letters: We use capital letters with proper names, titles and the beginning of sentences.

A- TAG QUESTIONS
Question tags are short questions at the end of statements. They are mainly used in speech when we
want to:
264
*to encourage a reply from the person we are speaking to.
Question tags are formed with the auxiliary or modal verb from the statement and the appropriate
subject.
A positive statement is followed by a negative question tag.

If the verb is in the past simple, we use did.
They went to the cinema,
She
When the statement contains a word with a negative meaning, the question tag needs to be positive.
He hardly ever speaks, does
They rarely eat in restaurants, do
Some verbs / expressions have different question tags.
For example:

PAST PRESENT FUTURE
We use the Future Perfect Continuous to show that something will continue up until a particular event
or time in the future. “for ten days,” “for two weeks,” and “since Monday” are all durations which can
be used with the Future Perfect Continuous. The duration stops at or before a reference point in the
future.
Examples:
will have been making her speech for over two hours by the time another lecturer starts.
will have been teaching English at my school for more than three years by June.
will you have been learning English when you graduate from the
