CURTAINS OPEN
On stage - lions and crickets at the back, narrators and Gerald in front,
Narrator 1 Gerard was a tall Giraffe whose neck was long and slim
Narrator 2 But his knees were awful crooked and his legs were rather thin
Narrator 3 He was very good at standing still and munching shoots off trees
Narrator 4 But when he tried to run around, he buckled at the knees.
Lions laugh and point at Gerald

Scene 2 – the Christmas Jungle dance
Narrator 1 Now every year in Africa they hold a Christmas Jungle Dance,
Narrator 2 Where every single animal turns up to skip and prance.
Narrator 3 And this year when the day arrived poor Gerald felt so sad
Narrator 4 Because when it came to dancing he was really very bad.
Zebras enter
Narrator 1 Everyone in their party best and the zebras started dancing.
Narrator 2 These high steppers came along and really started prancing
Zebra 1 Zebras zip here and zebras zip there
Zebra 2 black and white stripes zipping everywhere

Narrator 1 The lions danced a tango that was elegant and bold.
Narrator 2 it was liking watching ‘Strictly’ – all glittery gold
Lion 1 Lions grab your partners, hold onto them tight
Lion 2 we’re going to tango and twinkle toe tonight

Narrator 3 Next thing the elephants rolled along.

Narrator 4 Jiggling and jiving to a special jungle song
Elephants stomp on
Elephant 1 come one and come all to the jungle ball
Elephant 2 Watch us elephants as we have a ‘jol’

Baby elephant walk
Elephants sit at top of rostrum, lions move forward, Gerald walks to middle of stage

Narrator 1 Gerald swallowed bravely as he walked toward the floor,

Narrator 2 but the lions saw him coming, and they soon began to roar!
Lions ROAR! Hey, look at clumsy Gerald!
Narrators 3 The animals all sneered
All laugh
Narrator 4 And then the leopards had something to say
Narrator 1 As if Gerald hadn’t had enough for the day
Leopards come on with pompoms, push Gerald off to one side

Leopards laugh and run off

Crocs and zebras laugh and exit, lions laugh and exit, elephants laugh and exit

Narrator 2 Gerald simply froze up. He was rooted to the spot.

Gerald They're right, I'm useless. Oh, I feel like such a clot.
Narrator 3 So he crept off from the dance floor, and he started walking home.
Narrator 4 He'd never felt so sad before - so sad and so alone.
Scene 3 – Gerald and the starry night Narrator 1 Then he found a little
clearing, and he looked up at the sky.
Narrator 2 The stars and moon shone down on him from high
Narrator 3 and as he gazed upon the stars as they flew by
Narrator 4 he wished a great wish with a sigh
Gerald oh, my Christmas wish would be
The ability to dance so free
Moon enters
Moon you’ll go far if you reach for a star
Imagination is the key to create your own destiny

Music – Mr Mumba stars enter

Stars 1 and star 2 sit on steps
Gerald How beautiful are the stars and moon above

Crickets move forward
Cricket Excuse me Mr Giraffe, why is your face so long?
Sometimes when you're different you just need a different song.
Listen to the swaying grass and listen to the trees.
To me the sweetest music is those branches in the breeze.
So imagine that the stars and moon are playing just for you - everything
makes music if you really want it to.
Narrator 3 With that, the crickets smiled and picked up their guitar strings
Narrator 4 Then Gerald felt his body do the most amazing thing.
Narrator 1 His hooves had started shuffling, making circles on the ground.
Narrator 2 His neck was gently swaying, and his tail was swishing round.

Narrators join Gerald and crickets stand on narrator’s seats

Narrator 3 Gerald felt so wonderful his mouth was open wide.

Gerald I am dancing! I'm dancing! I AM DANCING!
Narrator 4 Gerald cried.
Narrator 1 Then one by one each animal who'd been there at the dance,
Narrator 2 Arrived while Gerald boogied on and watched him, quite entranced.
They shouted,
All animals It's a miracle! We must be in a dream!
Gerald's the best dancer that we've ever, ever seen!
How did you learn to dance like that?
Please, Gerald, tell us how.
Narrator 3 But Gerald simply twirled around and finished with a bow.
Narrator 4 Then he raised his head and looked up at the moon and stars above.
Gerald We all can dance when we find music that we love
Narrator 1 This tale of clumsy Gerald who got his Christmas wish
Narrator 2 to dance like a professional all swirling and swish
Narrator 3 reminds us all that to find the thing we do best
Narrator 4 we must give everything a go and put ourselves to the test
