THE DECCAN TRAPS

The Deccan Plateau Volcano began a series of eruption when dinosaurs still roam the earth. It is
the biggest volcanic eruption in history. Starting around 66 million years ago, the lava covered
up 1.5 million kilometers of land. The quantities of sulfur dioxide released a whole 2°C that
poison the oceans killing a massive quantity of planktons. Gases also poisoned the soil killing of
agitations as well. Although scientist community generally increases that it was an asteroid that
ultimately killed the dinosaurs, a number of scientist still claim that the volcanic eruption also
played a part. The volcanic eruption was so massive that some scientist suggested that the
dinosaurs were on their way to extinction when the asteroid hit.

MT. TAMBORA

The biggest volcanic eruption in human history began on April 10, 1815 in the Indonesian Island
of Sumbawa. 100,000 people were killed and the volcano released 400 million to of clouds
gases that blocked the sun destroying the crops and created the year without summer. It caused
the worst famine in the 19th century in the Northern Hemisphere. Lava flowed from the summit
that wiped out the town of Tambora. The gases were thick and heavy that can be seen over 600
miles away. The impact of the eruption of Mt. Tambora was felt for many years.

MT. PINATUBO

Mt. Pinatubo is the 2nd largest volcanic eruption happen in the Philippines in 20th century. It
created a lava dome over the volcano that was 200 meters wide and 40 meters tall. The ash falls
were experience far that it went in Malaysia and Indonesia. 60 000 people left their homes to
find safer grounds and although 847 people were killed by the volcano it wouldn't be a lot more
if not for the evacuation alert.

MT. THERA

This is also known as the Santorini Eruption that took place in 1646 B.C. It is considered by some
scientists to be the biggest volcanic eruption witnessed by man. It erupted with the forces of 40
atomic bombs. The massive amount of sulfur dioxide released in the air caused years of cold
and dropped the temperature globally. The environmental impact could be felt as far away at
North America and Arctica. At least estimated 40,000 people were killed in a span of only few
hours. The deaths and famine caused by the eruption greatly impact their population.

THE YELLOWSTONE SUPERVOLCANO

Lava crake eruption or known as Yellowstone National Park now erupted 640 thousand years
ago. The volcano released 240 cubic meters of rocks, dust and volcanic ash. The ash covers the
sky over the United States. This caused the ocean to cool by 3°. It also sent the earth into a
volcanic winter because it cools the atmosphere. This Yellowstone Volcano is still active today.
The scientist said that when the volcano erupts again, it will have a massive impact on the
climate and can even trigger an extinction of this.

WINDSCALE PILE

A windscale fire ignited plutonium piles and contaminated surrounding dairy farms on October
10, 1957. The radioactive contamination caused 33 cancer deaths and this was the worst
nuclear accident in Britain's history. An estimated of 20,000 curies of iodine-131, 594 curies of
caesium-137 and 24,000 curies of xenon-133, among other radionuclides were released by the
fire. This also affects the milk farms seriously and dropped the sales by 15%.

SCHALK RIVER NUCLEAR ACCIDENT

Chalk River Laboratory (CRL) is a site of major research and development to support and
advance nuclear technology. A reactor shut off rod failure among other errors that led to a
major power excursion on December 12, 1952. INES rated the incident level 5 because a series
of hydrogen gas explosion hurled the four-ton gas holder dome four feet through the air where
it jammed in the superstructure. Thousands of curies of fission products and million gases of
radioactively contaminated water had affected the atmosphere and the basement. The core of
the NRX reactor needs to be buried as radioactive waste.
LAKE CHAGAN

In 1965, people had a brilliant idea to create a lake by using a nuclear. They planned what to do
and every things and elements were measured. Afterwards, they took a channel between the
river and the crater and let the gravity do its thing. Unfortunately, they forgot an element thing,
the radiation. Lake Chagan is still radioactive until now.

STANDING UNDER A NUKE

Six men including the camera man, who are volunteers, do the ground zero of a nuclear test on
July 19, 1957. Explosion occurred over 3,000 meters about the ground. Those men stood under
the explosion without any safety gears. They did this to show United States that they had
nothing to fear about nuclear. The bomb exploded creating a bright light and powerful sound
wave that scared the six men. Everything seems to be fine not until they all got cancer.

STARFISH PRIME

This is conducted by the United States in July 9, 1962. A rocket containing thermonuclear was
launched from the Johnson Island of the Pacific Ocean. This caused electromagnetic fall that is
far larger from what is expected. It damaged the Hawaii and shutdown telephone calls in that
island. The flash created by the explosion can be seen 15 hundreds kilometer away.
