Assignment

1. Who are the Indigenous People in the Philippines?

- The Indigenous People are communities that are deeply rooted within their geographical
distinct having several beliefs, ancestral rites, and traditional habitat. 1
- They generally maintain cultural and social identities, and social, economic, cultural and
political institutions, separate from the mainstream or dominant society or culture. 2
- inheritors and practitioners of unique cultures and ways of relating to people and the
environment. 3

- They have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct
from those of the dominant societies in which they live. 4

- The number of the Philippines’ indigenous peoples remains unknown, but it estimated to be
between 10 per cent and 20 per cent of the 102.9 million national population. 5

- The indigenous groups in the mountains of northern Luzon are collectively known as Igorot,
while the groups on the southern island of Mindanao are collectively called Lumad. There
are smaller groups collectively known as Mangyan in the central islands, and even smaller
and scattered groups in the central islands and Luzon, including several groups of hunter-
gatherers in transition.6

2. Why do we need to study the history of our indigenous people?

- The history of Indigenous people is inseparably connected to the history of Americans,
Canadians, and many other nations. Through media we often get a lot of incorrect
information about these nations, and we build our own stereotypes without knowing where
the truth is. This is why it is a very good idea to take classes in Indigenous Studies just to see
how our own culture was created and how it was influenced. In the USA and Canada so many
streets, cities, states, rivers, and other numerous objects bear Indian names – and we all take
it for granted and do not even try to do research and see how deep the Native population’s
culture is and how much it influenced us. 7

- “Indigenous Studies courses provide a space for Aboriginal scholars and other intellectuals to
reflect on the past, both our own traditions and the history of colonization, to find ways to
forge a stronger future for our nations.” —Mallory Whiteduck, Aboriginal Cultural Liaison
Officer, Carleton University8

3. What are the laws that sought to protect the rights the indigenous people in the
Philippines?
- RA 8731 ; IPRA9
