products, Galvanic zinc coating
CN 04 0102

1 Modifications
Compared to CN 04 0102 Supplementary sheet 3:2009-05 the following changes were made:
 Standard editorially revised
 Examples and figures for corrosion protection coatings added
 Requirements for K1 added
 Corrosion resistance class 3.1 no longer needed
 EN ISO 2178 replaced by DIN EN ISO 2178
 ISO 9227 NSS replaced by DIN EN ISO 9227
 ISO 6270-2 CH replaced by DIN EN ISO 6270-2

2 Purpose and area of application

This works standard is applied to components specific to CLAAS. It does not apply to standard or
catalogue parts. In this case, the relevant national or international standards apply.

3 Galvanic zinc coatings

3.1 Coating process

No stipulations are made regarding the specific coating process. However, it is assumed that only
those processes that guarantee the most uniform layer structure possible will be used.
If it should turn out during the coating of the initial sample that a coating does not produce the
required uniformity in the drum process or the cyanide separation process, the coating process must
be amended. When coating cylindrical parts where the fit is marked on the drawing, screens must be
used to ensure dimensional accuracy if required.
High-strength components (e.g. springs) must be tempered for de-embrittlement purposes directly
after the galvanisation process but before being chromatised.
Process baths must be monitored in accordance with the guidelines provided by the chemical
suppliers.
The process data must be documented.

3.2 Requirements
The coatings must be free from defects that negatively impact on their appearance or corrosion-
resistance properties. In particular, these include pores, cracks, spots, stains and drips. The coatings
(including the chromate layer) must adhere firmly to the component and provide as homogeneous an
appearance as possible. High-strength and hardened components must not be embrittled by
hydrogen.

In addition, compliance with the following minimum requirements must be guaranteed:

Attributes Standard Corrosion- Requirement

resistance class (minimum)
Overall layer thickness DIN EN ISO 2178 K1 5 µm
K2 8 - 12 µm
K3 12 - 16 µm
Salt spray test DIN EN ISO 9227 K1 72 h2
K2 96 h2
K3 96h1
192h2
Condensed water – DIN EN ISO 6270-2 K2 and K3 120h
constant climate

To obtain a sufficient level of corrosion protection, the components – with the exception of fitting
parts – may also be provided with a clear paint coating.
The detailed specifications for the relevant surface coatings must be taken from CN 04 0102.

3.3 Examples and figures

The following figures show the typical technical appearance of the surface in question. Additional
post-treatments may alter the appearance of the coatings. Any intentional deviations from the visual
standard must be separately agreed and documented.
