Instructor: Dr.Prishati Raychowdhury Submission Date: 01.04.2017
1)Three concentrated loads of 4000 KN, 2000 KN, 6000 KN spaced at 3.0m and 2.5m respectively
between first and second loadsand second and third loads, all acting in one vertical plane at the surface
of soil mass. Calculate the resultant vertical stress produced by these loads on a horizontal plane at
1.5m, 3.0m and 4.5m below the surface at point directly below the loads and plot the vertical and
horizontal stress distribution.
i)Use Boussinesq’s Method.
ii)Use Westergaard’sMethod(µ=0)
iii) Compare the results.
2)The figure shows the plan of a flexible raft founded on the ground surface. The area supports a
uniform vertical load of 250 kN/m2.Estimate the increase in vertical stress at 15 m below point A. Use
Newmark’s Influence chart(Influence Value=0.005)

3) Consider a rigid rectangular foundation of dimension 3mx4.5m in plan(Depth of the foundation
=1.5m) on a layer of NC sand. The rock layer is located at a depth of 12 m from ground surface. Calculate
the elastic settlement of the foundation at the center of foundation. The following is the approximation
of Standard Penetration Number with depth:
Given, µ = 0.3, q0 = 200kN/m2.
4)A 8.5 m deep compacted fill is to be placed over the soil profile shown in the figure below.

Consolidation test on samples from points A and B produced the following results.
SAMPLE A: Cc=0.25 , Cr= 0.08 ,e0= 0.66 &σc’=101 kPa
SAMPLE B : Cc=0.20 , Cr= 0.06 ,e0= 0.45&σc’=510kPa
Preconsolidation stress at other points in each layers can be calculated using the following formula,
σm’ = σc’ – σz’
Where, σm’= Over Consolidation Margin, which is assumed constant
σc’= Preconsolidation Stress
σz’= Effective Stress at the level under consideration.
Compute the ultimate consolidation due to the weight of the thin fill.
