Migrating to Australia: My Parents Story

In Vietnam
My parents were born in Vietnam. Ma was born in Nha-Trang near Dea-Lat
in Vietnam. When Ma was little, she lived with her parents and went to
school there.

Ba was born in Ben Tre near Sai-Gon. When Ba was little, he lived with his
mother and three aunties.

In Vietnam life was hard. There was no freedom. People had to do every
thing the government told them to do.

Ba left Vietnam in 1980. He escaped from

Vietnam because he didn’t like living in a
communist country. The government would tell
every one what to do and you had no choice but
to do what they told you to do. There was no
freedom.

Refugee Camp
Ba escaped to Malaysia and lived at the for two years. Then he was
sponsored and migrated to Australia.

Ba was very happy in Australia. He thought Australia was very big and
loved doing what ever he wanted to do. He enjoyed his freedom.

Some years later, Ba went back to visit Vietnam and this is when he met my
Ma. They met in Ha-Trang. Ma met my Ba through her older brother. They
got to know each other and fell in love. They got married and had my
brother Ngoc. In 1995, when
Ngoc was two years old, Ma migrated to Australia with Ba. Ba sponsored
them to come to Australia. Ma said her happiest memory was being reunited
with her husband. She was happy because she was starting a new life in a
free country.

Arriving in Australia
Ma said that she found speaking English very hard. She worked very hard
in Australia to make money for her new family. Ma worked in factories and
on farms. Ba worked at a factory.
Settling
Ma said that life is more comfortable for women than life in Vietnam.
Women had to work very hard to support their family with not much food.
In 1997, I was born. One year later my sister Kelly was born.

How they Feel Now

about Australia
Ma and Ba are very happy to live in Australia. Australia offers a great future
for their children. I am happy to be live in Australia. I can do or be
anything I want. Australia is a wonderful country.
