Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 3

I. Objectives
Within the 60-minute period, the pupils should be able to:
a. identify symmetry and line of symmetry in a given shape and real world
examples;
b. show appreciation on the importance of symmetry;
c. demonstrate cooperation in doing the group work activity;
d. complete the missing half of a symmetrical object by applying their
understanding of symmetry.

II. Subject Matter

III. Procedure

Teacher's Activity Learner's Activity

-Good Morning Class!
-Good Morning Teacher!
*Prayer*
-To start our day, let's all stand and pray.
(prayer leader come in front and lead the
prayer)

*Checking of Attendance*

*Drill*
-Now let's have a drill! I will show some
flashcards specifically flashcards about
multiplication. If you know the answer
just raise your hand and the first one to
raise will be the one to answer. And if
your answer is correct, you will have a
prize!
(show flashcards) (pupils will answer)
*Review*
-Very good children! Now I prepared a
game entitled "You Raised Me Up". I will
group you into three. Each group will be
given a brown envelope containing the
names: parallel, intersecting, and
perpendicular. I will show on the board
the different kinds of lines and identify
them by picking the answer inside the
envelope. From the title itself "You
Raised Me Up", you will raise your
answer after showing the figure. Since
you are working as a group, what will -Share ideas!
you do?
-Yes Teacher!
-Yes that's right! Is that important?

-Very good! Sharing ideas is very

important. I'm glad that at your young
age, you know how to share. Let's go
back to the game.
-Yes Teacher!
-Are you ready class?
(pupils will raise their answers)
(Show one by one the figures)

(will show the correct answers)

-The winning group will receive a prize. -Kinds of Lines.

-Now, what do we call these lines?

-Very good!

*Motivation*
-Before we start, I have a friend. Do you -Yes teacher!
want to meet my friend?

-My friend is SpongeBob! Do you know -Yes teacher!

SpongeBob?
-Hi SpongeBob!
-He is a very good friend. Say hi to him!

-He is here because he needs our help. He

needs to find the half of his figures so
that he can put them to his house. Do you -Yes Teacher!
want to help him?

-To help him, I need 20 volunteers. We

will call this "Where's my other Half?”.
Volunteers will get one cut figure in the
box and will look for the half of it. First
two pairs who will finish the game will -Yes Teacher!
have a prize. Do you want a prize?

-You are given 10 seconds to find your (pupils will look for the half of their
partner. Time starts now! figure)

(after the game)

(will say the pairs won)
-Who won the game?

-What did you do to find the half of your (give their answer)
figure?

-That's right! What figure was more

challenging to find? (answer the question)

(follow up question)

-SpongeBob is very glad because we

helped him find the halves of his figures.

-Now class do you have an idea about our -Yes teacher!

lesson for today?
(will answer)
-And what is it?

(If no one can guess, show puzzled

letters)
-Our topic for today is all about (give their own meaning)
symmetry. So from the figures we got
from SpongeBob, what is symmetry?
-Yes teacher!
-Very good! Let's give him/her an angel
clap! Do you know the angel clap? (will do the angel clap)

-So let's do the angel clap.

-When one half of a figure looks like the

mirror image of the other half, it is
symmetry.
(show the butterfly figure)

-And this is the line of symmetry that -Line of Symmetry

divides a figure into two matching sides.
What do you call this line?

-Very good!
We call this line vertical symmetry when
it goes up and down.
(show examples)
(pupils will give their examples)
-Will you give me some shapes with a
vertical symmetry?

-Excellent!
When the line of symmetry goes left to
right or right to left, it is called horizontal
symmetry.
-Horizontal Symmetry.
-What do you call when it goes from left
to right and right to left?

(ask examples)

-Now, look at the classroom and give

other examples of symmetry and indicate
where/what is the line of symmetry. (will give their examples)
Example is the board, the line of
symmetry can be vertical or horizontal.
(will define symmetry)
Since you can give examples of
symmetry, what now is symmetry? (will define line of symmetry)

-How about line of symmetry? -Yes teacher!

-Does symmetry important? (give their opinion)

-Then, why it is important?

-Yes! We must give importance of the

things around us. -Yes teacher!

-Do you understand our lesson?

-Let us have our group work again. You -Share ideas and cooperate.
will work again as a group, so what are
the important things that you will do?
(each group will answer)
-Very good!
(will give the activities for each group)

Activities:
Group 1. Tell if the pictures show line of symmetry. Write YES or NO

_______1. _______4.

_______2. _______5.

_______3.
Group 2. Draw the second half of each symmetrical figure.

1. 4.

2. 5.

3.

Group 3. Draw 5 figures that show line of symmetry.

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

-For each group, once you are done, do
the YES CLAP and post your answers on
the board, then go back to your respective
seats.

(check the answers)

-The group who will get the highest point

will receive a prize!

(after the activity)

-Since you experienced to work as a

group, now it’s time to work individually.
Get a pencil and you will have some
exercises.
(pupils will answer)
(will give the photocopy of exercises)
(explain the exercises for each category)

(after the exercise)

(pupils will pass their copy)
-Pass forward! Then sideward from left to
right.
