Motivation:
- Children will be participating in Jungle themed activities throughout the week due
to the children’s interest in jungle animals
- There will have already been jungle themed objects (such as animal figurines)
added to some of the centers and we will be participating in this activity after the
reading of the book ‘Walking Through the Jungle’ by Julie Lacome.
- The children will be asked to take a seat on the floor area.
- As the children approach the area they will take notice to the stuffed animals. Ask
them to create a circle around the jungle animals that are placed in the middle of the
floor.
- Ask the children if they can identify their favorite animals from the book and see if
they can come up with other animals and things that they may see in the jungle.
- Explain that we will be going on our very own walk in the jungle and we will be
able to see some of these animals.
- Begin to play the music if it is not already on – if already on, turn up the volume of
the music.

Instructions/Implementation
1) The children will sit around the animals and we will converse about all the
different animals and surroundings that we may find in the jungle.
2) The children will each be able to place a décor or decal on the wall or floor
around them. They will interact through sharing ideas and materials with each
other. There will also be some props (animal glasses and masks) available for the
children to wear.
3) The children will be given instruction to have a big stretch by pointing their
hands up to the sky and then touching their toes. Then we will begin our walk by
putting on our rain boots, our coats, our backpacks and our binoculars.
4) The children will begin by walking through the jungle (around the classroom)
and trekking through the mud until the teacher pauses the music and exclaims that
we have run into an animal (a lion roaring, a snake hissing, etc.) and they will then
be told to try to act like that animal in order to pass by without being noticed.
5) Continue walking through the jungle as different animals until almost reaching
the end of the activity. Let the children know that we are almost through the jungle
safely and we just have to quietly trek through the mud. At this point turn down the
music.
6) Once the music is lowered let the children know that it is time to remove our rain
boots, our coats, our backpacks and our binoculars and then sit back down.
7) Complete the activity by telling the children that we had a very exciting walk
through the forest and do some stretches as a closing/cooling down technique.
8) Continue the closing/cooling down part of the activity by asking the children
what their favorite part of the activity was and encourage the connection between
the children’s answers with the book that was just read.
Have the children help by tidying up their spot for the next group of friends that will
be coming up to take part in the group activity.
9) At the end of the activity children can take down the decals and décor and put
back the masks and glasses. Thank the children for taking part in the fun walk
through the jungle.
