1. Application:
Aluminum alloy rod specified by this standard is mainly used for the over head conductors. It is aluminum -
magnesium -silicon alloy and is known by the name Almelec.The following specification is mainly for the
drawn wire after heat treatment from 1.8-2.99 mm and it is the supplier job to ensure the rod properties are
enough to meet the wire requirements.

2. Standards:
The latest edition of the following standard is applicable:
1. IEC 60104 Type B
1. ASTM B398

3. Requirements:
3.1. Size:
Aluminum rod shall be of round cross sectional area of 9.5 mm diameter with +/- 0.75 mm as tolerance.

3.2. Electrical Properties:

The drawn wire after heat treatment should be of the following properties:
1. Minimum conductivity of 53 % IACS
2. Electrical resistivity shall not exceed 32.53 ohm.mm2/km at 20 C.

3.3. Mechanical Properties:

3.3.A. For the drawn wire after heat treatment should be of the following properties:
1. Minimum tensile strength at elongation is 295 MPa
2. Minimum elongation at break is 3.5 % [250 mm]

3.3.B. For the rod

1. The tensile strength is 190-205 MPa and the
2. Minimum elongation at break is 10.0%

3.4. Chemical Composition:

Supplier should submit a certificate about the chemical composition of the alloy.

3.5. Finishing and Appearance:

Aluminum rod should be supplied in form of coils in one continuous length without any kind of joints. Rod
should be clean, smooth and free from pipes, laps, slake, flakes, cracks, twists, seams, damaged ends,
excessive oil and grease and other injury or defects.

4. Packing and Marking:

The aluminum rod coil should be of maximum diameter of 1.5 meter and of maximum height 1.0 meter.
Each coil weight should not exceed 2.0 MTons and not less than 1.5 MTons.

Each coil should be delivered on a wooden or steel pallet strong enough such that no damage occur during
handling or storage.
With each coil the supplier should submit a tag including the supplier name, purchasing order number,
coil number, lot number, temper type , net weight and gross weight.
NB
1- The quality and application of wrapping material shall be adequate to protect rods from damage incident
to normal handling and shipment
2- Each coil should be furnished in continuous length without joints

5. Acceptance Test:
The following tests and checks are conducted as acceptance tests:
1. Appearance Checks.
2. Diameter Measurements.
3. Electrical Properties .
4. Mechanical Properties .
5. Weight .

All tests procedure are as stated in the above mentioned standards. Supplier should submit with each coil a
certificate of conformity and test certificate.
