ABSTRACT

HERNANDRZ, JOHN AEIRON V., SIAPNO, JUSTIN DANIEL T., BALICOCO,

AARON JUSHUA M., MATIAS, GEDD ALDREEN P. Grade 11 – STEM Class, Sarrat
National High School, Senior High School, Ilocos Norte. March, 2020. “THE EFFECTS OF
LEARNING INDEPENDENCE ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF GRADE
11 STUDENTS”

This descriptive study aimed to determine the effects of learning independence on the

academic performance of Grade 11 students this school year 2019-2020. Thirty (30) junior

high school students of Sarrat National High School were randomly selected as respondents of

this research.

In the information gathered, it indicates that learning independence has a great effect in

the academic performance of Grade 11 students of Sarrat National High School. Most students

pointed out it was important to set their own learning goals, to identify their strengths and

weaknesses so as to find ways to build up the former and overcome the latter, and to review

their lessons. They also mentioned that spending more time outside the classroom maximizing

their learning opportunities was of vital importance. The majority of the students agreed that

going to the library and surfing the internet was a catalyst for promoting independent learning.

Usuki (2000), Hubbard (1994) and Littlewood (1999 as cited in Sakai, Takagi & Chu, 2010)

believe that independent learners are individuals who are confident in being responsible for

their own learning by setting goals, determining ways for learning and assessing their progress.

They further added learning independence improve their academic performance.

The general recommendation of the study is that students should spend more time in

doing assignments, requirements and study their lessons. And the parents, teachers, and school

which are the greatest factors of the study, it is recommended that they should explain the

concept of independent learning to students and expand the space of library and provide more

reading resources.
