LINEAR SCREEN

1. INTRODUCTION
The Linear Screen was developed in South Africa with the primary objective of removing
wood chops (organic material) from entering the gold circuit.

The Linear Screen consists of a steel frame, rollers, tracking unit, sprays, gearbox, motor,
distribution panels, feed box, drip tray, discharge chute and screen cloth.

In gold mine the Linear Screen either remove wood chips, or act as a carbon catch screen.
The Linear Screen is also used for wood chip removal in the platinum industry.

In the case of Mineral Sands beneficiation, the Linear Screen is used to screen oversize
material.

If one looks at the basic principle of operation, a head of slurry is formed in the feed box
with the slurry draining by gravity from the feed box onto the linear screen fabric.

By forming a head of slurry in the feed box a driving force is created, resulting in sufficient
velocity of the slurry so that the undersize fraction of the slurry passes through the aperture
of the screen cloth while the oversize fraction is trapped on the top side of the linear screen
cloth and discharged into a chute as the cloth passes over the head pulley.

The continuous rotation of the screen cloth and washing of the cloth by a spraybar, creates
new open area and thus the screening process continues uninterrupted.
