Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

This study explores high school students' beliefs and behaviors associated with
cyberbullying. Specifically, it examines this new phenomenon. Why it's important to conduct this
study. We conduct this study to prevent cyberbullying. Young people have suffered drastically
from some type of cyberbullying. Cyberbullying victims are more likely to have low self-esteem,
depression, and consider suicide It is extremely important to work to delete cyberbullying
because hundreds of lives can be saved.Overall, cyberbullying is significant because it affects
the emotional and psychological wellbeing of children & teenagers worldwide. If those who are
bullied fight back, skip school (to avoid facing the bully in person), or become bullies themselves
it's possible that the issue can escalate.Cyberbullying is a very complex and complicated issue,
and it isn’t as simple as just turning off the computer. Kids today have to be online for homework
and even to socialize with their peers. So how do you deal with cyberbullying when it seems you
just can’t get away from it. As this problem grows, it’s important for students, parents and
educators to understand the effects of cyberbullying and what can be done to prevent it. This
guide takes a holistic look at the issue and includes information on the types of cyberbullying,
how students can protect themselves and what actions can be taken to address it after it
happens So that everybody would know the worse case scenario of our surrounding in this
period of technology.

Background of the study

Cyberbullying and cyber harassment are also known as online bullying. Cyberbullying is
bullying that takes place using electronic technology. Electronic technology includes devices and
equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including

24
social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites. Cyberbullying is similar to traditional
bullying in many ways; however, the main difference from traditional bullying, is that it doesn’t
stop when the child is in the safety of his/her own home. A child who is cyberbullied is likely to be
bullied at school as well. Cyberbullying can be relentless, prohibiting an escape for the victim,
which can severely damage a child’s mental health and negatively affect self-esteem.

Facebook and other social media websites can be used, and allow for “anonymous”
cyberbullying to occur. For example, there may be a private group chat or page set up in which
the child, who is the victim of the bullying is unaware of its existence. These more private setups
are usually eventually discovered, which then brings the full weight of paranoia, embarrassment,
and feelings of isolation on the victim. Text messages and group chats have the same effect
upon its victims. Forums, typically gaming forums or other hobbyist forums, can also turn into
cyberbullying arenas. Reddit.com, which is one of the largest and most visited social websites, is
a forum-type of social media, and users there are nearly completely anonymous. This gives
cyberbullies less empathy for their victims, and allows them to continually attack. Because the
victim is not bullied at school or other areas where teachers are usually present, responsible
adults are not alerted to the bullying or able to observe the usual tell-tale signs of bullying. Some
people who bully are tough and strong. Other bullies might be popular but thoughtless, rather
than deliberately hurtful. Bullies are more likely to have lifelong issues such as depression or
problems with aggression. But early treatment can prevent this from happening. Some children
who bully may enjoy getting their own way. Others may like conflict and aggression. Some may
have difficulties with health, schoolwork and self-esteem. And some may be emotionally
neglected, bullied, abused or be experiencing violence themselves. Children can take on
different roles in different circumstances. Those who are bullied in one situation may be the bully
in another. (Health direct 2018)

We researchers conducted this research because we wanted to provide the students with
some knowledge on the negative effects of cyberbullying. This study may help as a guide for
those who are not aware on the negative effects of cyberbullying. To give the students
realization that they need to be sensitive to the students who experience cyberbullying. How to
treat students suffering in cyberbullying. This study will help to encourage and educate students
properly without proper knowledge, awareness and perception.

25
Scope and Limitations

The study conducted to determine the negative effects of cyberbullying among the grade
11 students in St Chamuel institute of colleges. The respondents must be chosen based on
purposive sample with the following can be male or female that study at St Chamuel institute of
colleges, grade11 students, and with or without experience in cyberbullying. Purposive sampling
was used because participant were chosen based on the experience, The interview will be done
according to their convenient time, a consent form was presented and discussed with the
respondents before being invented for study participant.

Theoretical Perspective

The theoretical framework of this study will be consisted of three theories. First theory
called Theory of Reasoned Action, Second called Social Cognitive Theory and the last theory is
a theory about its origin

Statement of the problem

According to world health organization Bullying is a major public health problem that
demands the concerted and coordinated time and attention of health-care providers,
policymakers and families. Evolving awareness about the morbidity and mortality associated with
bullying has helped give this psychosocial hazard a modest level of worldwide public health
attention however it's not enough. Bullying is a multifaceted form of mistreatment, mostly seen in
schools and the workplace. It is characterized by the repeated exposure of one person to
physical and/or emotional aggression including teasing, name calling, mockery, threats,
harassment, taunting, hazing, social exclusion or rumours. A wide range of bullying prevalence
has been documented among students and in labour forces worldwide. In response to this
problem, our study aims to look for the negative impacts of cyber bullying that affects among
Grade 11 students of St Chamuel institute of colleges, we want to know Students’ Perception.
Specifically, it will answer the following questions: 10

26
1. Demographic Data A. Name B. Sex C. Strand

2. What are their reasons of negative effects of cyber bullying gender and how
they adapt to the society?
3. In terms of equality, what are their perception and experiences with or without?

4. Why do you think people cyberbully others

5. Have you ever been cybeullied

Significance of the Study

What is the significance of your study to different fields and group of people?

Students. That is why this study is important to the students especially the students of St
Chamuel institute of colleges. This study aims to provide the students with some knowledge on
the negative effects of cyber bullying. It will give the students realization that they need to be
sensitive to the students who experience cyber bullying. This study may help as a guide for
those who are not aware on the effects of cyber bullying.

Researchers. Through this study, researchers will help the students to know what the negative
effects of cyber bullying and how to treat students suffering cyberbullying. Also, it will be helpful
for the researcher since they were be able to know the negative effects of cyber bullying.

School. The situation portrayed in this study will help the school for counseling the students and
it will give the school realization that they need to build an organization for the students for the
students who suffering cyberbullying that tackles about perspective and experiences of grade 11
St Chamuel with or without experience of bullying.

Teachers. The given factors would guide the teachers on how to treat persons suffering cyber
bullying The teachers will know how to be sensitive to the persons experience cyberbullying.

The teachers will be more aware to the negative effects of cyber bullying.

27
Future Researchers. The ideas presented may be used as a reference data in conducting new
researches or in testing the validity of other related findings. This study will also serve as their
cross-reference that will give them a background or an overview of the predictions of the
negative effects of cyber bullying of the Grade 11 students.

Community. The given factors will help the community be aware of negative effects of cyber
bullying of the Grade 11 students. The community can focus on how to of the students in their
situation understanding their situation. Also, the community can reach out to the government to
establish organizations that will conduct programs and orientations that tackles on the negative
effects of cyber bullying.

Scope and Limitation

We are going to conduct a research which is all about cyberbullying. We want to know
their knowledge, awareness, perspective and how they are trying to perceive their own risk of
contracting cyberbullying. Knowing ones’ knowledge about this field is significant nowadays and
it is a must to know what cyber bullying are and how it will help us if we have proper wisdom
prior to this field. The main participants of our study are the students of St Chamuel institute of
colleges. We will going to pick at least two students per strand in GAS, ICT, and HE. Grade 11
students and if conceivably their president. If their president is not attainable we are going to pick
one of their officers. The scope area of our study is school named St Chamuel institute of
colleges, Pasig City. We are going to gather data by means of interview. We are going to
conduct our study there since we are going to tackle students’ perception about cyberbullying
and we will use the students of their school as our participants. We are going to conduct this
study within two months starting March and April. We will do this study in three months since it is
only the time that is given to us to finish this research.

Definition of terms
Bullying- is a form of aggressive behavior in which someone intentionally and repeatedly causes
another person injury or discomfort. Bullying can take the form of physical contact, words or
more subtle actions. The bullied individual typically has trouble defending him or herself and
does nothing to “cause” the bullying. (Espelage D. 2017)

28
Cyberbullying- is the use of technology to harass, threaten, embarrass, or target another person.
Online threats and mean, aggressive, or rude texts, tweets, posts, or messages all count. So
does posting personal information, pictures, or videos designed to hurt or embarrass someone
else. (Elana Pearl Ben-Joseph, MD 2018)

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

The researchers used a number of articles and journals in order to get insights that would give
ideas in pursuing this study. This chapter presents the related literatures and studies both local
and foreign sources about the perception of adolescent/students.
Local Literature

Cyberbullying is one of the top challenges facing public schools. There are many
recurring Cyber-bullying is a negative act of the user using social networking for making fun of
another user, for harassing a user over an instant messaging, for posting picture without permission

29
of the user or even false rumors. While bullying typically happens at school, cyberbullying takes
place over cyberspace. Because of modern technology it easy to users to post a message destroying
the reputation of other social media users .However, cyber-bullying is covered by existing laws
against personal threats and harassment . In some cases, it may be advisable to inform the school
principal or consult a legal counsel.

The law prohibits bullying, including cyber-bullying that occurs inside or outside of legal
problems confronting public schools. Educators are mostly challenged in developing policies and
guidelines to prevent the utilization of technology to bully other students. To raise awareness to
students and school personnel, educators establishes systems for reporting and monitoring of
students use of technology within the campus. Thus, these circumstances contribute to a wider
appreciation of cyberbullying experience of students within and outside the campus. Sentiment
analysis is being utilized in most of social and business discipline as sentiments are mainly present
in everyday activities, and considered explainers of human behaviors. Opinions, perceptions of
realistic events, beliefs and decisions are trained on how other people see and assess situations or
events. Most of the time, a person seeks opinion from others before making a decision. These
situations commonly exist in persons and firms. However, there are limited studies investigating the
sentiments of senior high school students in cyberbullying, thus, in the Philippines, cyber bulling is
also a main concern in the education sector. At this point, this research aims to explore on the
sentiments on cyberbullying in a senior high school program of a university in the Philippines.
(Hernandez, A 2017)

Cyberbullying has been identified as an important problem amongst youth in the last
decade. It is often a systemic attempt to get another child or teen to feel bad about him or herself
through electronic communication (devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and
tablets, as well as social media sites and text messages). This is not limited to the Internet; cyber
bullying also encompasses bullying done through such things as text messages using mobile
devices. It is important to note that cyber bulling can only happen between minors. When an adult is
harassing children or teenagers, it is known as cyber harassment or cyber stalking. (Cocal, C 2017)
Although bullying is considered as a long time problem that happens in school among school-aged
kids, cyber bullying is seen as a different problem in the age of Internet. Chait (2006) explained that
unlike the traditional form of bullying where the bullies attack their victims face to face, perpetrators
of cyber bullying have the capability to use all types of communications technologies to attack others
deliberately and repetitively. (De La Salle University Manila. 2014)

30
Foreign Literature

Cyberbullying is a new and growing form of bullying that has emerged with the advent of
technology. It involves sending offensive, humiliating, or threatening messages or images through a
computer or cell phone. It is most often seen with middle- and high-school students, although
elementary-school students also have engaged in this high-tech form of bullying or been its victims.
Cyberbullying can take various forms, ranging from a cruel joke to a vicious threat. And it can be
perpetrated by someone the victim knows or by a complete stranger. In some cases, cyberbullies
are or have been victims of face-to-face bullying and use the Internet to fight back in an arena in
which they feel comfortable. Cyberbullying has increased dramatically in recent years -- to the
extent that it is now a serious concern among parents and school officials. As one example of the
prevalence of the problem, a survey conducted by I-Safe America, an Internet safety organization,
found that 37 percent of 1,500 middle-school children questioned acknowledged being bullied or
threatened online. (Shore, K 2017)

Bullying belongs to the family of aggressive behaviors, as it involves repeated attacks,

humiliation, or the exclusion of a person on behalf of one or more powerful others. For the case of
school bullying, these are mostly fellow pupils, who often reside within the same class environment
as the victim (Roland & Galloway, 2002; Salmivalli, 2010).
Compared to the mental harm caused by victimization by any form of traditional school bullying,
the digitally mediated nature of cyberbullying may invoke a number of additional negative
consequences for those who become involved in it as a perpetrator or a victim. First, it can take
place 24 hours a day and 7 days a week (including before- or after-school hours or during the
weekends) and thereby impede the cybervictim from finding a “bully-free” safe retreat. Second, the
networked nature of computer-mediated environments enables the content of the online bullying
episodes to spread virally in the online environment, thereby involving a larger (theoretically endless)
audience of bystanders than in traditional forms of school bullying. Third, the fact that perpetrators
and victims often do not find themselves in the same physical setting has been associated with
higher levels of anonymous bullying, a decreased level of empathy, and heightened di sinhibition to
victimize others (Brody & Vangelisti, 2014).

Cyberbullying is a significant public health concern that can lead to increased risk of mental
health issues, including psychological and developmental problems or suicide. However, because
cyberbullying is a relatively recent phenomenon, there is a lack of agreement among researchers

31
about the definition and prevalence of cyberbullying as well as methods for measuring its
prevalence. In this review, we evaluate papers published between January 2013 to August 2015
that explored cyberbullying through the medium of social media (Garett, R 2016)

32
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY

This chapter present the method of research designs used, data gathering instrument,
population & sample and collection methods & procedure.

Research Method & Design used

The study is Qualitative Research that use Case study type of research method. For this
appropriate method in knowing the factors of cyberbullying. It involves collection of data that will
provide description of individuals, groups and certain situations. Instrument that researchers
used to gather data and details in their descriptive study includes; questionnaires/surveys,
interviews and observations.

Research Methodology
This chapter presents the method utilized in this study together with the procedures employed,
including the preparation, distribution and data collection, then research method used and the
construction of the questionnaires which is the chief tool used in gathering the needed data.

Collection Method Used and Procedure

The qualitative method is used to obtain valid information that the researchers need through
survey questionnaire which involves the factors cyberbullying of the Grade 11 students of St.
Chamuel. The reasons why we used the method of survey and interview because in our
research study aimed to answer all the possible questions, circumstances and issues regarding
with our study so that we can provide a valid answer or statement that was needed to know.

Sources of Data
The data is composed of the selected Grade 11 students of St. Chamuel based on the
factors of cyberbullying Grade 11 students of St. Chamuel.

33
Data Gathering Instrument
The data gathering instruments used by the researchers is the survey questionnaire that was
answered by the selected Grade 11 students of St Chamuel

To determine the perspective of cyberbullying the researcher used 3 different kinds of

instrument to gather information for the study. First, a survey/questionnaire were handed out to
the respondents which considered 10 items. Second, participants were interview to get their own
perspective and feelings. Third, observation that helped obtain a comprehensive data.

Population and Sample

The population for the research are the Grade 11 students who experience cyberbullying in
St. Chamuel. For this research, researcher sample from lists and people who are required for
this research to do so. A target population or sampling frame as a group of individuals or the
organization with common characteristics that the researcher can identify and study. The
population is commonly the students that experience cyberbullying in Grade 11. The research
applied a good or convenience sampling were the researcher selects samples that are the
available and willing to participate in the study. The researcher know that the target is the
cyberbullying. The researcher are able to obtain permission from the students and teachers that
part in cyberbullying District to conduct the study with any available sample.

Description of the Subject

The researchers asked permission to the participation of individuals to have some
schedule/time to answer the questionnaires and have an interview that is convenient to them.
Afterwards, the researchers distributed the copies of the questionnaires to the respondents that
necessary permit from the authorities.
The instrument was collected after the respondents had finished answer the
questionnaires. As for the interview, it was finished on the scheduled time sharing stories in
interviews provide a holistic view for the researcher’s deal a complex picture of the issue with
regards of the study involving their perspective (Creswell, 2013). Data gathered were analyzed,
classifying the interpreted for analysis and interpretation.

34
Data Gathering Procedure
The data gathering procedure will immediately start to carry on the table of the study after the
proposal and its instrument have been prepared and approved by the adviser. The researchers
will seek first the approval of Grade 11 Students in St. Chamuel to conduct the study and run the
questionnaire/s. After being approved, a requesting letter to conduct the study and gather the
needed data will be presented to the Practical teacher. The questionnaire to be used will be
tested for its reliability and validity before it is to be floated to the target students. The reason
why we used the method of survey and interview because in our research study we aimed to
answer all the possible questions, circumstances and issues regarding with our study so that we
can provide a valid answer or statement that was needed to know. Our study has a broad topic
but we focused on the perspective of the students. In providing such information’s about our
research study we make questionnaires before conducting a survey and interview with our
participants in order to gather information’s and analyze it. By providing questionnaire, we were
able to gathered new information, opinions and statements that we didn’t used to know and
categorize it and also analyze their answer for further understanding.
