ABSTRACT
The challenging nature of nursing work environments indicates venerable
and mounting concern about nurse’s empowerment, organizational commitment
and the provision of quality of care, specifically in healthcare setting. Nursing
leaders, specifically nurse managers play a vital role in creating empowering work
environment to avert negative trends and increase nurses’ organizational
commitments. The study aims to examine the resonant leadership of nurse
managers as determinant to empowerment and organizational commitment of
registered nurses in a selected tertiary teaching hospital in Makati City
The research design is a descriptive non-experimental correlational design.
The proponent utilized three instruments. The resonant leadership scale made by
Dr. Greta Cummings, The Condition for work effectiveness questionnaire for
empowerment made by Dr. Heather Laschinger and the TCM Employee
Commitment Survey for organizational commitment Made by John Mayer and
Nathalie Allen. The respondents of the study are nurse manager and registered
nurses both from the general nursing and specialty nursing unit with at least 1 year
in service prior the study. 10 selected registered nurses and 2 nurse manager
participants met the criteria and not part of the data gathering procedure
undergone the pilot test. 37 nurse manager and 233 registered nurses that met the
criteria involves as the participants of the study.
The result of the study reported that there is a significant relationship
between level of resonant leadership of nurse manager and level of empowerment
(r=0.881) and organizational commitment(r=0.774) of registered nurses. The socio
demographic profile of nurse manager has no significant effect on resonant
leadership. A nurse manager can become a resonant leader regardless of age,
gender, area of assignment, educational attainment and income. The socio
demographic profile of registered nurses has no significant effect on
empowerment and organizational commitment. A registered nurse can be
empowered and organizational committed regardless of age, gender, area of
assignment, educational attainment and income. According to literatures the
leadership style of a nurse managers like resonant leadership can result into
positive work outcomes and can influence the outlook and decision of registered
nurses
Based on the result of the study, a proposed leadership enhancement
training program focusing on the development and enhancement of resonant
leadership among nurse managers and nursing leader.
