My Reflections

In line with our ministry’s direction to infuse the Joy of Learning into teaching and learning, I embarked on a series
of lessons on descriptive writing with my Secondary 3E class (306) this term. I intentionally teased out descriptive
writing techniques of using one’s five senses and “Showing, not telling” through a guided analysis using Pop Song
lyrics. This worked tremendously well as it made students think deeper and make meaning out of ‘previously
learnt’ lyrics and some even commented that they never saw the song the same way after the lesson. Using
relevant media truly enlivens lessons, engages my students and still achieves learning outcomes. I have learnt to
be adaptable and I certainly endeavour to be open-minded in viewing current teenage material in order to draw out
more rich learning experiences for my students in future.
