today has been changing at a
breakneck pace. Some of the
change has been for the better, as
public parks have outdoor exercise
equipment, group exercise options
have increased, some gyms are
now paying attention to the benefit
of social support for exercise
adherence, and the recent
proliferation of barbells, lifting
platforms, and free weights warms
the heart of the generation of today.
Personal trainer and a celebrity
favourite, Ben Coleman offers
group training, nutritional advice,
and bootcamps to clients across
England.

He is of the opinion that our

bodies are the greatest tool for
exercising and he is constantly
fascinated and experimenting with
how to use body weight in
exercising. That is why he created

design a programme for a client,
we go through their full medical
history and lifestyle. I can then put
the theories and practices into a
bespoke programme that will work
for them. Following a general
programme will deliver some
results, but that won’t compare to a
tailored programme designed
specifically for you.
Nowadays we see people
following all kinds of diets-
Keto, Mediterranean, Protein
and several others. Are they
healthy, in your opinion?
Fad diets are exactly that – a
fad. Whilst some of them
may deliver some
short term ‘results’,
such as weight loss, this
is usually because they are
removing whole food groups from
your diet. The truth is: ultimately, if
you only eat five biscuits a day you
will lose weight because your
calorie consumption is low.
However, these biscuits will not
provide the fuel your body needs to

run efficiently. This is not a
long-term solution for a healthy,
balanced diet. The only
sustainable, healthy way to lose
weight is to reduce your overall
calorie consumption – ideally by
cutting down, or cutting out,
foods that are high in trans and
saturated fats and processed
foods. A balanced diet, that is
nutrient rich, combined with
regular physical activity is the key
to healthy body.
What is your approach to
nutrition and what does your
diet look like on a regular
basis?
My philosophy is to eat small
meals regularly, three main meals
and 2-3 snacks per day. By
reducing the portion size and
eating more regularly, it’s easier
to maintain blood sugar levels,
which helps control weight gain
and perform more efficiently. I eat
a lean, varied diet filled with oats,
fruit, lots of veggies, nuts, seeds,
fish, chicken and lean red meat
on occasion. I tend to only drink
water rather than other soft
drinks. However, I’m human too.
The main thing to remember is to
keep those treats to exactly that
– a treat. Not a regular thing.
As an expert in the field of
nutrition do you think that
nutrition timing matters?
Absolutely. The timing of when
and what we eat is crucial in fuelling
our body correctly. We must first look
at the activities and address the
timings of food accordingly. For
example, after a tough gym session
we should be replacing our glycogen
stores within 15 minutes.
Consuming carbohydrates within
this time frame can help the body
retain up to 50 per cent more
glycogen. This will in turn benefit our
performance for our next session.
How do you rate the Indian
diet? Do we get enough
protein? What would your
recommendations be?
Indian food is delicious. Fresh
fish, lentils, chickpea dishes are a
great source of protein and fibre.
However, on the other hand
excessive chapatis, white rice and
ghee are not great for weight loss. I
have many clients who struggle with
their predominantly Indian diet. My
recommendations would be to try to
reduce the sugar and salt content
when preparing food, and replace
certain foods for slower release
carbohydrates such as brown rice
rather than white rice.

My background is in
professional sport, I was a
footballer for Aston Villa and
several other clubs in the UK and
Australia. I didn’t actually enjoy
working out or being in the gym
at all while playing. I was too
interested in just playing. I got
into fitness whilst in Australia and
I am truly grateful for the places it
has taken me and the
opportunities it has given me.

Who is the most interesting
or eccentric person you have
ever trained?
Most interesting for me
personally was Ranbir Kapoor. I
came over to India to train him
and didn’t know anything about
him or much about Bollywood. I
had travelled to India as a
backpacker in 2008 and
absolutely loved it here. I’d even
seen some movies played on
buses as I made my way around
so I knew it was big over here. I
did not have a full
comprehension of just how big
though. It’s very impressive with
how he and other celebs deal
with it at times. Also being part of
All-Stars FC I get to be around
lots of interesting and eccentric
characters. I’m very honoured
and blessed to be their coach
and part of the playing squad.
Tell us about the diet routine
that you follow to remain
healthy and maintain your
gorgeous six-pack abs?
My diet routine is fairly similar
every day, I love eggs in the
morning with green tea and
coconut water. I will usually have
a protein smoothie with almond
milk and oats mid-morning. The
chicken or lamb wraps during the
day as they are easy for me to eat
on the go. For dinner, it will vary
but it will always contain a good
amount of protein with
vegetables. It’s important you
plan your meals and/or prepare
them. That way you aren’t left
with no other option than to get

something you know you
shouldn’t be eating on a daily
basis. Keeping your diet simple
but varied helps keep you on
track and things in your control,
which is over half the battle.
Powerlifting has grown in
popularity over the recent
years, what do you think is
the future for the sport?
Powerlifting is great fun and
very addictive. Just make sure you
do it safely and treat it with
respect. I think powerlifting can
certainly get bigger and better. Our
interest in fitness, our
understanding of the body and
exercise has skyrocketed the last
ten years or so. I can’t wait to see
where it is in another five/ten years.
What is your favourite
non-traditional form of
exercise?
Walking places and
exploring on foot, be it in nature
or a city. I’ve done some amazing
treks and hikes all over the world
and in India.
What is your take on natural
bodybuilding? Do you think it
is possible for someone to
get a good body without the
use of steroids?
It is 100 per cent possible.
Most people assume that if you
take steroids you automatically
get a great body, which is a long
way from the truth. It still requires
a lot of dedication and hard work.
I’m very much against steroid use
and that’s probably not a popular
answer in certain circles believe

be healthy, happy, and lean, eat
with that in mind always.
If you were not in the
fitness industry, what would
you be doing right now?
Surfing/skiing instructor or
some form of outdoor pursuit
work. I’m highly adventurous,
fairly fearless and love pushing
myself. You could say I enjoy
things that get my adrenaline
going.

But being born into a Bollywood
family isn’t the free ride you think
it is; it takes a lot of hard work to
make it look this easy. Sooraj
Pancholi shows just exactly how
it’s done. Edited excerpts from the
interview.

What is your earliest and

fondest memory of watching
a film?
I am actually a very emotional
person in real life but when I
watch films, I watch it like an actor.
I view the content technically and
see how the performances are. I
have never cried in a film until I
watched a film named Hachi: A
Dog’s Tale. Since I am a dog lover,
the depth of emotions really
touched me.

when I am busy shooting, I control

Fitness for me is very natural.
Even if I wasn’t an actor, I would
still work out for myself. It’s a
passion for me, it is not just for the
looks or to entertain the audience,

from you because you are a

Salman Khan has been a big
influencer in your
professional as well as
personal life. Was it him who
brushed off his fitness streak
on you?
The first time I met Salman Sir, I
was a 5-6-year-old kid. After that,
I met him when I was an 18-year-
old and by then I was already
ripped.
How did you prepare for your
upcoming role in Satellite
Shankar?
In Satellite Shankar, I am
playing the role of a soldier. It is a
drama film and not an action film.
The theme of the film doesn’t
revolve around a soldier having a
body or a war-induced
background. It is actually the only
army film that doesn’t involve any
action and is not based on war. It
is the journey of a man who is a
young jawan and his tryst with life.
What I genuinely had to prepare
was my acting skills and the role
had nothing to do with fitness, but
since working out is a part of life,
it came effortlessly to me.

What is your
opinion on
supplements? Do you
think it is possible for
someone to get a good
body without its use?
It all depends on what kind of
supplements someone takes. If
you take anabolic supplements,
then I would not suggest it
because it is very risky for the
future. You may look your best
for the time being due to its use,
even like a superhero, but
internally you will end up ruining
your whole system. In the case
of basic supplements such as
protein shakes, multivitamins,
BCAAs, all of them are
necessary but not in excess
quantity.

Coming to your fitness
consciousness, do you ever
eat what can be termed as
“normal” food?
I mostly eat home-cooked food
and lots of greens. I also try to
consume solid meals such as eggs,
fish, oats, fresh juice, and
vegetables. Technically, broccoli and
spinach have more protein than
meat since animals eat greens and
we eat them. The cycle complete
and we end up getting the protein
from the greens through them.
People miss out on dry fruits, which
is actually really good for the body.
Walk us through your typical
day at the gym.
I train until I fall on my knees. If I
don’t do that, I don’t feel good.
Point being, if I drive for 20
minutes to reach the gym and only
work out for 30 minutes, then it is
a complete waste of my time.
There are numerous diet fads
present in the world, do you
follow a specific one to
maintain your gorgeous
six-pack abs?
I have never followed a diet
plan. I like eating carbs and sugar.
But I would like to add that
everything should be balanced. If
you eat whatever you want in the
right quantity, then it is the safest
decision.
Women say that rather than a
man’s physique, they often
look at their personality and
sense of humour. Do you
think this is true?
Of course. If I had a girlfriend
who had a good body and a
beautiful face, that wouldn’t have
been enough. As humans, we all
need compatibility, interesting
conversations, and attraction. I
truly think that physicality is just
one per cent of the way I will get
attracted to a girl. A person needs
personality, man or woman.
One secret about you that not
many people know of?
I don’t train as hard as people
think I do.
What’s one fitness or health
myth that people should
avoid?
I think people should definitely
stop thinking that carbohydrates
are bad for the body.

Fitness is important, and so is
diet, but sleep is even more
important and it helps our body
recover from all the wear and tear.

astray. But how do we make it work?
“People seem to take care of their
cars and pets better than they take
care of their bodies. Health and fitness
seem to be quite low on peoples’
priority lists when, in fact, there is
nothing more important. If you want a
good life, if you want to be pain-free
and disease-free well into your twilight
years, then you need to make fitness
an integral part of your daily routine.
Proper exercise, a nutritious diet, and
adequate sleep, that’s all it takes,” said
Jitendra.
He further goes on to say that,
“stalling is resistance to change and it
takes on a number of forms, especially
fear. I wish there were a magic formula
for overcoming procrastination but the
only thing that works is taking action. In
the beginning, simply aim to turn up at
the gym. Don’t overthink things, don’t
keep very high expectations of
yourself. Start small, build a daily habit,
take it one day at a time, this seems to
work. You’ll be amazed at what just six
months of doing this will do for your
health and body.”

How has your journey been so far?
The journey has been nice. I always
believed that it was easy to become a star on
television, but to maintain that status is the
most difficult part. I’m happy that from
Kayamath till now, people have always loved
my work, and I keep getting different tasks to
do. I’m glad that people enjoy the kind of
work that I do.

You are currently hosting Superstar

Singer, which is a singing reality show
for children to showcase their talent.
According to you, how is a regular
reality show different from a kids’ reality
show?
The best part about Superstar Singer is
that the contestant gets a chance to perform
with talented and known professional singers
of the music industry. In a kids’ reality show,
children are guided under the supervision of
renowned singers. Also, it’s always fun while
shooting with little kids as they keep
everybody entertained.

Is it easier to play a character or to

portray yourself on stage?
Well, it’s difficult to play yourself on stage.
Playing a character is a little bit easier. There
is a difference in both of them. For instance,
when on stage I need to entertain the
audience and everyone who is a part of the
show, even if I am in a bad mood. But when
you’re talking about being a character, there
are thousands of retakes, which you can
afford to lose. There are so many people from
directors to creatives to every single person
guiding you to give a perfect shot. On the
contrary, when you’re anchoring there is no

guidance. Being on stage does not require
spoon-feeding. You need to be spontaneous
enough.

This watch from Fossil takes a very different approach to its design, as
it utilises a very simple look, while also leaning hard into the see-through
aspect of it. The body is made up of a 44mm stainless steel casing that
features mineral crystal glass on both sides. The dial’s have been left
mostly empty, with huge gaps between the handful of Roman numerals
used to represent the hours. The rose pink tone of the hands is the only
deviation from the colour scheme, and the watch pulls off the contrast
beautifully. The watch relies on a 20 jewel movement that is powered by
the motion of your wrist. This is not a bad deal for a watch that barely
costs `8,500 and is compatible with all 22mm straps offered by the
company.

This offering form the Japanese brand features
an almost overly simplistic design that shrinks the
skeleton part to a small circle on the face of the
watch. In fact, almost half of the circle is obscured
by another circle that features the hours of the day.

yet elegant design that features a plain white look
with large Roman numerals. The glass is made up of
anti-reflective and scratch resistant hardlex crystal,
that gives a clean if limited view of the mechanical

LG is one technology giant that delivers
high-quality 4K TVs, but thankfully, at an

model we have chosen is the C8, which
features a thin bezel-less design that
gets gradually broader near the bottom
in order to make room for the electronics
and speakers. The speakers are uniquely
fitted as bottom firing units that use the
curved strand to bounce the sound
towards the viewer. The result is a
louder, wider sound output that is

The visual quality is on par with the
competition, with deep blacks and
vibrant colours, thanks to LG’s Alpha 9

with various connectivity ports help

like our love for it, the TV has

can be said for their flagship OLED model, the A9F,
which represents the best that 4K can be at a price
(`4,22,000) that backs up that statement. What you
get for the price is one of the best 4K displays on the
market, which not only supports flawless 4K output at
60fps, but also doubles up as the speaker system.
This is accomplished through its one of a kind
Acoustic Surface Audio+ system that uses three
actuators and two bass drivers to vibrate the OLED
display itself to create sound. This represents the next
level in 4K entertainment with lots of connectivity

TCL is a well-known brand that is making its

What are your thoughts on the
inclusion of women in the automotive
industry?
Over the past few years, our economy has
reached a place where both men and women
are on par with each other. It is becoming a
known fact that women love cars and luxury
with equal zeal. If we take a trip down the
historic lane, we will find that queens of
England have had the best of carriages,
designed beautifully and luxuriously. This
clearly states that luxury has been the forte
of women since time immemorial. It is,
however, true that in the past women did not
talk much openly about the engines and the
design interior of a car. Gradually, women
have emerged at the forefront of being vocal
about these aspects thus bringing around a
breath of fresh air to the masculine
automotive industry.

Being an interior designer, how were

you able to apply your skills in the
merchandising business for Big Boy
Toyz?
The way it is for mathematics where the
formula stays the same, likewise, it is the
same for any other aspect of life. Even
though I am an interior designer, I have used
my knowledge in curating the elements of
colours, structure, look, and feel of the
product.
You were awarded the ‘Certificate of
Excellence’ by the Golden Book of
World Records for holding 563 scented
bottles. How did you develop this
profound collection with perfumes?
When my parents were on their
honeymoon, my mom bought small bottles of
perfumes which were later gifted to me and
thus began my interest in collecting miniature
perfumes. The quest to do something
different from my contemporaries was always
on the wishlist and the mental soft spot for
perfumes grew into a full-fledged hobby of
dwelling deep into the peculiarities of various
renowned brands together with making them
a part of my collection. A staunch diversion
from the run of the mill praxis proceedings,
the strong emotional connect with perfumes
saw me stack the exemplary bottled
specimens with utmost care in a colossal
glass cabinet, that calls for a grand recital of
“passion is the basis of achieving everything
you once dreamt of”. Thus my collection of
perfume bottles came into being over years
of nurturing and preserving something that I
love and am fascinated with.
As the Chief Operating Officer at Big
Boy Toyz, what do you drive and what
is your dream car?
My dream car as of now is Bentley, which
I am aiming at acquiring soon. At the moment
I drive a land cruiser. It is a family car.
However, I have always been an SUV or a
sports car person. Prior to this, I owned a
G63.
What are some challenges you face in
the merchandising business?
One of the biggest challenges is to take
out the economically viable product and also
to maintain a brand image for BBT. Known
for quality, client servicing, BBT has
maintained a brand image and standard
which I need to maintain while curating the
same.
You have balanced motherhood and
your professional life with harmony
and precision, which is truly
commendable. Who supported you
through your journey?
I strive to achieve a lifestyle with a perfect
work-life balance wherein I can give an
optimum to my Merchandise Section and not
feel guilty of neglecting the family members
and household affairs. My daughter Zaara
and Son Ranaveer command most of my
attention. My children, my loving husband,
in-laws and my parents have been my pillars
of support in my journey of entrepreneurial
harmony and family bliss. Without the support
of my loved ones, it would not have been
possible.
With a soaring number of accolades in
your name, where do you see yourself
and Big Boy Toyz in the next few
years?
I may be the COO of the Merchandise
Section but both my husband and I work as a
team and intend to remain that way. Along
with our responsible and dependable staff,
we want to expand, innovate, and offer our
best services to the people in the coming
years. It is not only about competition but a
process of constantly evolving that keeps us
on our toes and market ourselves better.

Chennai is probably one of the
most underrated cities in the
country. It’s not a metropolis where
you would find yourself running
continuously from morning to night,
like in Mumbai or Delhi. My favourite
memory as a child in Chennai would

be picnics by the beach. When we
were kids, a couple of our family
friends with their children would pile
up into cars and head down to the
beaches. We used to enjoy our time,
make a bonfire and spend the day
swimming, running, and playing

have not failed to impress
audiences with your moves.
How was your journey in Nach
Baliye?

I have always enjoyed dancing
and I used to do ballet as a child. As
an Anglo Indian, I think dancing is
just a part of our culture. My mom
taught us how to dance when we
could barely walk. I think it’s very
different to love dancing and to do it
socially. However, it’s a very
different thing when you get to be
on stage and perform
choreographed numbers, and Nach
Baliye was definitely a huge
challenge in that regard. It’s not
easy at all, but having said that, I
think I really enjoyed the journey, I
learned a lot about myself, about
dance, and I explored new avenues
with my partner as well. The joy of
seeing your performance after you
have done it and realising that you
actually accomplished what you set
your mind to is a really euphoric
feeling.
You were also a part of
Khatron Ke Khiladi. How did
you learn the art of
overcoming your phobia?
I have always been a bit of a
tomboy. Even as a child I used to
love to be on my cycle or climb trees
or just be outdoors. For me, Khatron
Ke Khiladi was a little less about
phobias and a little more about

key difference between the
two industries?
The key difference about
pageantry and entertainment is that
firstly, the pageant world falls
underneath the entertainment
banner. But, they are two very
different things. Pageantry is more
about finding a woman who can
represent a cause and make a
difference in the world, whereas the
entertainment industry is just about
keeping people entertained. In India,
we confuse it a bit because we look
at Miss India or any of these
pageants as an entryway into
Bollywood. The actual reason why
Julia Morley was the original owner
of the Miss World pageant was
because she wanted to prove that
women didn’t need to get married to
start off their lives, they could
actually be influential and be the
instruments of change.
Have you ever considered
branching out into something
different in the field of
entertainment, for instance
directing or screenwriting?
I have definitely thought about
branching out into other things. In
fact, a lot of people don’t know this,
but I have a degree in electronic
media. It’s basically a general
understanding of production. My
purpose in studying everything was
actually to go behind the camera
because my dad is a wildlife
photographer, and I was inspired to
do the same. But, even before I had
finished my course, I was already
modelling and was out there in the
entertainment industry. So, I decided
to give the front of the camera the
first shot. But, I am very convinced
that at some point in my life, I will be
transitioning into a different aspect
of the entertainment field.
Web television series are a
rage right now and the fire has
caught up in India as well, will
you be interested to work in
one?
I would definitely like to do a web
series. It’s a great platform because
there is less restriction and there
are fewer people involved. So it
allows the creative team to just be
free and make the story. It’s like a

I think the key to my heart is
also through my stomach. I really
love food and one of the things
that convinced me about my
partner was the fact that he loves
to cook. Anyone who tries to put

men who are just very
comfortable in their own skin and
confident about who they are.

I
t is hard to define the Corvette
Stingray, as it has always had
the looks of an exotic car, the
drive of a sports car, but with
the internals of a muscle car. Now,
more than 50 years after its
inception, the Corvette is
undergoing what can easily be
classified as the most significant
change in its history, by going
mid-engine for the first time.
What this means is that the
6.2-liter V8 engine from the
previous generation has been
heavily modified to fit behind the
driver. In its new configuration, this

engine produces around 495bhp
of power at 6,450rpm and
delivers it using an automatic dual
clutch transmission. There will be
different performance variants
that are expected to push this up
to more than 1000bhp with a
0-60mph time of less than three
seconds, but those are still down
the road.
The driver position has been
moved forward by 16.5 inches in
order to make space for the
engine, as well as the new side
scoops that are located right
behind the doors, and feature

Jeep Compass
In terms of American
manufactures, the Ford GT
is the only true competition
in this segment. It features
a twin-turbo V6 engine that
produces an impressive
647bhp, set in a body that
has lots of carbon fibre and
performance parts. However, it
still delivers a 0-60mph time of
around 3 seconds, which the
Corvette claims to beat.

massive air intakes. This has
made the centre of gravity quite
low, giving the car superior
handling. The suspension has
been upgraded as well and now
features a system that can learn
your driving style and
automatically adjust the
suspension to avoid bumps and
scrapes that appear often on your
daily route.
All in all, the company has
done everything to make this car
more driving oriented, which can
even be seen in the layout of the
interior which is literally focused

on the drive side. It goes without
saying that this is an entirely new
Corvette for a new generation.
Thankfully though, these changes
don’t cost much as the pricing is
still in the same range, with a base
price of $59,995 for the 1LT
model. The 2LT and 3LT models
cost around $67,295 and $71,945
respectively, with the Z51
performance package costing an
additional $5,000. This translates
to a top price of around ` 55
Lakhs, which is not bad for a car
that offers this level of
performance and beauty.
On the European front,
the Ferrari Tributo is certainly
a huge competitor as the
brand itself is enough to justify
the starting price of around
$275,000, which is almost
half of the Ford GT. The car
produces more power, thanks
to a 3.9 litre V8 that makes
710bhp and features the latest
innovations in engineering
developed by Ferrari’s F1 team.

onsidering the frugal
nature of Indian
consumers and the

KAWASAKI VERSYS X 300

Kawasaki has had a history of
building reliable bikes, which
reflects in the Versys X 300. The
bike shares its engine with the
well-known Ninja 300 and
produces 39BHP of power and
26Nm of torque. The engine is
paired with a six-speed manual
transmission and rides on 19 inch
spoke wheels in the front and 17
inch ones in the back. Even though
this translates to a healthy ground
clearance of 180mm, it is advised
to still be careful with the bike as it
doesn’t have any under belly
protection like other vehicles made
for off-road use. However, you do
get dual-channel ABS and
dual-disk brakes, which is more
than enough to stop it on a dime.
All of this at a starting price of
`4.69 lakh; make this good
enough to be your first dedicated
off-roader.

BENELLI TRK 502X

Benelli is one of the oldest Italian
brands involved in motorcycle
manufacturing, even though their
history in India is relatively limited.
Their TRK 502X adventure bike is
only the second bike from their
portfolio to come to India and
features a bigger 500cc engine
that produces 47BHP of power
and 46Nm of torque. The entire
setup sits on 19 inch wheels in
the front and 17 inch wheels in
the rear with a ground clearance
of 220mm. In addition, the bike
also gets upside down shocks in
the front and an adjustable mono
shock in the rear, combined with a
sturdy metal bash plate to take
care of any bumps you might
encounter. All of this makes for a
confident off-roader, at a starting
price of around `5.1 lakh.

BMW G310S
At a starting price of ` 3.49 lakh,
this is easily the cheapest BMW
you can get in this country.
However, the price isn’t a
compromise as the bike comes
fully stocked with a 313cc engine
that produces 34BHP of power
and 28Nm of torque. The engine
as well as the frame is taken from
the G310R, even though in this
version, the bike gets long travel
suspension with upside down
shocks in the front and an ABS
system that can be shut off. The
bike gets a familiar 19 inch front
and 17 inch back setup, even
though in this case, it translates to
a better ground clearance of
220mm. The end result is a strong
contender from a reputed brand
that delivers great performance at
an affordable price range.

CFMOTO 650MT
CFMoto is a Chinese brand that is
just entering the Indian market
with a host of offerings. Even
though they manufacture different
types of off-road vehicles, the
650MT is their first offering in the
country. The bike comes with a
649.3cc engine, which produces a
healthy 71BHP of power and
62Nm of torque. Unlike other
bikes in the segment, this one sits
on 17 inch alloy wheels in both the
front and the back, which has led
to a very questionable ground
clearance of around 170mm. The
suspension is taken care of by an
upside down shock in the front
and mono shock in the rear, while
the braking is handled by single
disc setup on both tyres, along with
dual-channel ABS. With this setup
and a starting price of `4.99 lakh,
this is more than capable enough
to have a place on this list, even
though its long term reliability is yet
to be tested.

The 1000cc segment faces heat with BMW’s
latest update to their popular superbike.

T
he two wheeler segment in
India has evolved quite a bit
over the years. Continuous
advancements in technology and
design have brought the Indian
market in league with our
international counterparts. So much
so, that even casual riders have
become comfortable with handling
large displacement motorcycles in
the 500-900cc range.
This has boded well for the
superbike segment as well. Now
more and more people are
interested in buying 1000cc
machines that have a solid racing
pedigree.
One of the highly respected
names in motorcycle racing is
BMW Motorrad and in this
segment, their S1000RR has
made a solid name for itself. BMW
has just launched the latest
version of this supersport with a
999cc unit, which produces
around 207BHP power and
113Nm of torque. The engine gets
the benefit of BMW’s ShiftCam
Technology, which allows for
variable valve timing (VVT). This
tech promises superior
performance throughout the range
of the 6-speed unit. BMW has
augmented the software with a
six-axis IMU that is responsible for
the cornering ABS and Dynamic
Traction Control (DTC). This means
the bike can adapt to all types of
tracks and riding styles, with a slew
of riding modes on offer. The
brakes and suspension have been
updated as well to handle the
increased performance better.
All these changes come at a
price though, as even the
standard model of the bike starts
at an eye-popping Rs18.50 lakh,
while the Pro and Pro M Sport
models are available with
additional features and an even
more premium price of `20.95
lakh and `22.95 lakh,
respectively. Entering inside the
brand ecosystem also gives you
access to various accessories
and gear that is equally high
quality and high priced, so make
sure to keep room in the budget
if you are looking to indulge in
some high end biking, in style.

SAME IN CLASS
Suzuki GSX R1000R
With a 999.8cc motor that makes 202BHP
power and 117.6Nm torque, the Suzuki gives
tough competition to the Europeans at a
competitive price of `19.81 lakh. It also gets
an adjustable swing arm pivot and balance free
suspension. With new steel braided brake lines
ensure that the bike is as good at stopping as it
is at taking corners at high speed.
Ducati Panigale V4
At a starting price of `20.53 lakh, this
superbike is the perfect competition for the
BMW with an equally impressive racing
heritage. Along with the heritage comes a
host of advanced technologies including a
new 1103cc engine that produces 214BHP
of power and 124Nm of torque, as well as a
new frame and suspension setup.

Coming from the background harder. Bollywood industry was the

of a reality show and entering
the Bollywood industry as a
playback singer, how would
you describe your entire
journey?
I don’t consider myself from
reality show background because I
was a part of it for only two rounds
and that was the first and the last
time I participated in a reality show.
It taught me a lot for sure and I
understood that I need to work
first thing that happened to me
when I came to Bombay. I gave
myself some time and I came here
to enjoy music, get to know other
musicians and understand how
music is happening in India. I never
thought that I would sing a dance
track and the whole country would
be grooving to it. I think I am still
living one day at a time and just
living in gratitude as to how
everything panned out.

You began learning music at
a very young age. What drew
you towards music?
Well, I think if we go down to
the root of it, there was a rich
musical environment at my
house. My parents used to listen
to great rich musicians such as
Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle,
Nusrat Saab. I can’t imagine my
life without music playing in the
background whilst my mom
cooks food for me. Other than
music, I have tried a lot of things
such as mixed martial arts, in
which I received a black belt at
the national level and trained
quite religiously for seven years. I
also participated in district and
nation level rifle shooting. You
could say I was always into
athletics. I did an MBA and had a
lot of other options. Having said
that, when I would come back
home at night and play guitar, it
was the best time of the day for
me. I felt the happiest. As I grew
up, I realised that our purpose of
life is to do what we love the most
and enjoy while doing it.
You are known for singing
soulful and romantic
numbers, which later
become top chartbusters. Is
there anything special that
you do to get into that
creative space?
When I am working on a
song, I make sure that I am aware
and present at the moment.
When I am dubbing, I enjoy the
moment and understand the
song deeply. It is very important
to understand the lyrics and
instead of singing, I try to say
them with conviction. The
moment I address the lyrics to
someone, it suddenly finds its
soul and is quite convincing and
honest. I think that is why some
of the songs take ages to rise
and eventually have become
some of my biggest hits.
You have sung in multiple
languages. While singing,
how important for you is it to
understand the lyrics of the
music?
I have sung in multiple
languages such as Telugu, Tamil,
and Jaunsari. I try to understand
the song by translating the lyrics
in English and by making sure
that my pronunciations are
correct to keep the soul of the
song intact. Initially, it was difficult

when I started singing Bengali
songs, but then gradually I got
comfortable with the authentic
pronunciations of different
languages.
Apart from singing for
Bollywood movies, you have
also stepped into the realm
of independent music. Do
you believe that independ-
ent music can help a
musician build their career
in a better way?
Bollywood has been very kind

who are very talented musicians
and I know how hard all of them
have worked towards their music.
I have multiple projects lined up
in Bollywood in the coming years.
I have received a lot of love for
my folk songs and I believe I’m
blessed as an artist who’s living it

go as a musician. I want to keep
exploring my field and
independent music has given me
the liberty to be curious.
With time, music has
evolved gradually. What is
2017 HUMMA HUMMA that one thing that you
would want to change about
the industry?
Yes, music has evolved and
honestly I don’t want to change
anything about the industry. We
are already going through a
dynamic change since the
introduction of social media. In
terms of how the music is sold,
the way artists are made, the
way songs are making money,
everything has changed. There
are better opportunities for
people at present, which I think
is a boon for the industry.
2015 ZINDAGI KUCH Social media has become a
significant medium for
interacting with your fans
and followers. What is your
take?
Initially, I had no presence of
social media, but then when I
started using it I realised its
importance. I get to know my
fans better and how they
perceive my songs and their
reactions instantly. It allows me
to learn and grow as an artist.

why?

strength. They guide me and
give me the courage to battle all
the obstacles in life. If anyone
gets inspired by my journey, they
should know that I was trained
for music by my parents. They
have worked hard towards
making me who I am today and I
want to thank them for being so
inspiring.
It is rightly said that
practice makes a man
perfect. What is your
schedule for riyaaz? Any
tips for the budding flock?
If you do the exact same
thing, in exactly the same way,
you become a master in it; that’s
what art is about and that’s also
how you train your brain. My
schedule is unsteady because
of my work and travelling
schedule. I use the travelling
time for riyaaz sometimes in my
car or early in the morning. Tip
for the budding flock is sing
more meaningful songs and
make sure that your song has a
message.
Tell us something about
your upcoming projects.
What’s next on your list?
There are a lot of things in
the pipeline right now, such as a
song in Himesh Reshammiya’s
upcoming film, 3D Dancer,
Sadak and apart from that I have
a song that I’ll be releasing on
my YouTube channel and I’m
really excited about it.

A true Mumbaikar at heart,
what was your childhood
like?
Mumbai is so full of emotions
and life, I love it to bits. The city
offers freedom in every way
possible and there is this sense of
security here, which you can’t find
anywhere else. It has a great mix
of culture, there is so much
ambition - and these are some
qualities that I completely
resonate with. I think growing up
my life was all about school,

roadside Mumbai sandwiches,
and tuitions where we had
students from all different
schools. We used to visit the
Nehru Planetarium, going to
Ranchi Baugh, Marine Drive, Juhu
beach, eating rolls at Carter Road,
and watching films at Regal.
How did a casting assistant
become an actor?
I always wanted to be an actor,
but I started as a casting assistant
because if I hadn’t taken up a job,
my parents would have moved me
to England. I didn’t even know
what a casting assistant does, but
I did my work with all my heart
and love. Over the years, all my
seniors and different directors
saw the talent in me. I was so
young at that time, I was 20-21
and that’s when I met Shanoo.
She has a very big hand in my
career. She spotted that there is
something in me and started
working upon it. And, within a
month the script for Dum Laga Ke
Haisha came and they asked me
to gain weight for the role. Of
course, I had to audition for the
part, but eventually, I got the role,
and that was it.
Your movies Dum Laga Ke
Haisha, Toilet: Ek Prem
Katha and Shubh Mangal
Saavdhan all revolve around
small-town and middle-class
India and did great at the box
office. But big-budget films
are not able to do well. What
do you think is the reason
behind this?
I don’t think the budget of the
film really matters, it’s the story
and what clicks with the audience.
As a country, there is so much
that we go through, be it political
scenarios or socially. I think by the
end of the day you just need to be
true to what you are trying to say.
Of course, we try to establish
such stories that people can
relate to.

Your role in your debut film
was a completely opposite
representation of a
quintessential Bollywood
heroine, were you ever
scared that you may not be

Definitely. The only worry I had
was that I didn’t really want to be

of debut that I had, I did gain a lot
of weight. Moreover, I wasn’t sure
if people would understand the

Zoya has scripted the thought
and the platform she chose was
the best way to showcase the
entire story. So, when Lust
Stories came to me and I read
the script, the girl and the
character excited me a lot.
What roles are you most
comfortable with?
I think as an actor, I should be
able to do everything. I don’t want
to restrict myself to a particular
thing. Now I want to be able to
crack any kind of role, be it an
offbeat character, a commercial
film, something serious or
someone that’s older or younger.
That’s the beauty of being an
actor, you should not limit
yourself. I want to be as limitless
as I can.
We have some desirable and
good looking actors doing
amazing movies, which actor
are you dying to work with
next?
I really want to work with Ranbir
Kapoor because he is such a
phenomenal performer. I really
feel his talent is outstanding. So, I
think it would be great fun
working with him because of the
kind of films he does are very
hardcore.
Who is that one person
you’ve always looked up to
and has constantly inspired
you to achieve more?
I will say, Priyanka Chopra. Not
because we both come from the
same profession, but as a girl
what she has achieved is
tremendous. It is not just about
her moving to the West, but what
she is globally doing for humanity
and the kind of global icon that
she’s been is very inspiring.

really done before. People will be
seeing me in a different light. It is
young, fresh, and sexy at the same

really excited that I am the cover
shoot star.

and Information Technology,
were you always focused on
working in the fashion
industry, or was there a
specific moment that inspired
you?
I studied with the aim to create a
fashion brand. It was my dream to
own a label and I started working on
it from the day I passed out of
school.
As the Managing Director of
Da Milano, what does a
workday look like for you?
Every day is a new schedule.
Sometimes I am travelling for work
or visiting the stores as each store is
company-owned and self-funded. I
spend most of my day at the office.
Every day brings in new challenges
and new learnings.
What are some challenges you
face in the fashion retail
business? How do you stay
motivated?
As a brand, we face multiple
challenges in a day. We have more
than 80 stores in India, UAE, and
Nepal. A constantly growing brand
faces major challenges such as
identifying the right location for the
store, allocating the products which
will be accepted by that market and
strategising marketing activities to
reach to the right target audience.
Getting a location at leading malls
and the airports is another challenge
we face as a brand. The style and
design market is very dynamic yet

tricky; it never stays still. The thrill of
working in this business is its
ever-changing mood and
momentum. It is important for us to
have a good understanding of
consumer tastes and what makes
them vary.
How important is social media
for a brand and do you see any
benefits in using it for wider
customer reach?
It does not matter if you own a
small fashion label or an
international brand. Social media is
an imperative platform to market
your brand. It is the most effective
yet affordable way to reach out to
your target audience and showcase
your brand’s offerings. This tool is
also the easiest medium to talk
about the brand ethos and the brand
story.
Tapping the Indian market can

What is your strategy to remain
always in demand?

What is the significance of

I believe that innovating new
products and designs keep a brand
going. Customers are looking for

and structuring ideas is the key to
growth for any fashion brand.
In your opinion, what are the
latest trends that are driving
the leather accessories
industry right now?
Gone are the days when leather
accessories were only accepted in
basic black, brown, and tan colour.
The changing trends have increased
the demand for quirky and out of the
box colours. Neon, shades of
orange, blues, corals, reds, etc., along
with bold textures like snake,
crocodile, and lizard are ruling the
leather accessories industry.
You are also at the helm of
Rosso Brunello. Where does
the company stand today in
terms of growth?
I founded Rosso Brunello in
2010 as footwear was the only
fashion category we did not have.
When I started working on it, I
realised that it is so vast that we
could create a separate brand for
footwear. The store count is
expected to grow exponentially in
the coming years in India and
abroad.
What is the best advice you’ve
ever received? Would you
enjoy mentoring the novices in
the fashion and retail world?
My father always tells me to stay
humble and down to earth no matter
how successful you become in life. I
would love to share my experiences
and learnings with people who are
starting up their own business.
With a soaring number of
accolades in your name, where
do you see yourself and your
brand in the next few years?
We now have more than 80
stores across the county, five stores
in Dubai and one in Nepal. And
we’re working on opening in
London, Singapore and a few more
in UAE. We aspire to open multiple
stores across the globe and reach
out to discerning clientele of all age

Tell us something about
your journey from the
early days to being one
of the most important
players of the Indian
hockey team?
It has been a fantastic
journey for me over the years.
My hometown Shahbad is
known for hockey and after
seeing a lot of players from
there represent the Indian
team, I decided I wanted to
play the sport. Initially, it was
tough, as my father was a
cart-puller. However, my
family was always supportive,
and they provided me with
the best. It was not just a
dream, but hockey became a
platform for me through
which I could help my family.

I am very thankful to my
first coach Baldev Sir
because it is due to his hard
work and training that I have
reached such a stage in my
hockey career and in life.
Being the captain of the
Indian hockey team, how
do you make sure players
peak at the right time for
a tournament?
It is not about how the
individual players are peaking
in the tournament, it is more
about how the entire team is
collectively rising. Our focus is
always to make sure that we
are all working hard on the
training ground and keeping
ourselves focused when we
play a tournament. However,

recovery and time-off also play a

huge role in making sure that you
are ready for the battle. Our
support staff, led by Chief Coach
Sjoerd Marijne, helps all the players
in understanding their roles and
playing out different scenarios on
the training pitch so we understand

a match.

As a sportsperson who is
young and has been in the
limelight since the age of 15,
how do you handle criticism
on social media?
It has obviously been a long
time and when you come into the
national team at such a young age,
you are a bit sceptical about
everything. But as you grow into
your career, you speak to fellow
players, coaches, and then you
gradually understand the do’s and
don’t’s. We have to keep improving
every single day, be it on the field
or off it, so when it comes to social
media, it is best to take it in your
stride, and improve yourself to
make sure that there is no negative
criticism.
Tell us about your greatest
achievement and the biggest
challenge you’ve ever faced in
your career so far.
My greatest achievement
would be the 2010 Women’s
World Cup held in Rosario,
Argentina. Even though our team
could only finish 9th in the
tournament, it was one of the best
tournaments for me personally. I
won the Best Young Player of the
Tournament in that World Cup,
which was an amazing feeling, and
I was also the top goal-scorer of
the tournament. The biggest
challenge over the years has been
to maintain that consistency in our
performances from match to
match. Hockey is a sport where a
match can turn around in a matter
of minutes, and to avoid being on
the receiving end, you have to
perform consistently.
Who’s your inspiration in the
field of hockey?
Indian hockey’s iconic legend,
Sardar Singh has been my
inspiration, and I have been
fortunate enough to have learned a
lot from him.
India created history as they

you see the sport is heading in
the future?
I feel the level of women’s
hockey has been on the rise
especially since 2016. We also
qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympic
Games, and it was a huge
achievement because we had made
it to the Olympics after 36 years.
Since then, we haven’t looked back,
we broke into the top-10 teams in
the world by winning various
international accolades including the
Women’s Asia Cup in 2017.
Another huge achievement was
winning the Silver Medal at last
year’s Asian Games, and under the
guidance of our coaches, I believe
that we will qualify for next year’s
Tokyo Olympic Games, and will keep
heading in the right direction when it
comes to women’s hockey in India.

You started your tryst with

judo at a young age of 16.
How did this come about?
In my village, I used to get into
a lot of fights, and one of my
neighbours with whom I would
fight was a judo player. I saw her
and thought that I should also
take up the sport. Initially, I started
training on my own and
subsequently, told my parents
that I wanted to train
professionally. That’s when I was
scouted into the Inspire Institute
of Sport (IIS) Judo program in
2017 and since then, my career
has truly taken off.

The first Indian judoka to

have ever receive a medal at
the Olympics, how does it
feel to have achieved this
honour?
I felt very proud that I
represented India at such a big
stage and won a medal for my
country. I had competed and won
at the Asian level before, but I had
no idea about what to expect
competing at a global level with
some of the best athletes from
around the world. I aimed to win
the gold, but I also took back an
amazing learning experience from
Argentina, where I had some
great results on the way to the
finals. The fact that I was given
the honour of donating my judogi
(judo jacket) to the Olympic
Museum after my performance
was just the icing on the cake.
You come from a humble
background where your
parents didn’t have adequate
funds to support your dream,
but they stuck by you at all
times. Were they always this
committed to your idea of
taking judo as a career?
My family was always very
supportive of my dream of
pursuing judo. Hailing from a
small town in Manipur, it is not
easy to take up a sport which
doesn’t enjoy widespread
popularity, as the means to
succeed in the same becomes
limited. I have been fortunate to
have the right kind of nurturing
and platform to excel.
How do you think more
women can be encouraged
to get into the sport?
I think more girls should be
supported to do what they like. If
there’s someone interested, they

Getting more girls to play a sport
when they are young is a good
start and will go a long way.
Do you ever worry that judo
will take up too much of
your youth, restricting you
from experiencing other
things?
I have loved sports and
games for as long as I can
remember. If I wasn’t playing
judo, I would probably have been
playing some other sport, so I
can’t think of anything that I miss
doing at the moment. Sports has
played a very important role in
my life and has helped me make
a name for myself. So, I am
ready to focus only on judo and
not worry about missing out on
anything else.
Could you describe your
training regimen and
preparation for big events
like the 2018 Olympics or
the Asian Judo
Championship?
We follow a fairly disciplined
training regimen that is suited to
our needs. For example, before
major tournaments, the training is
more focused on technical
aspects that need work. But on a
normal day, our training regimen
includes a few hours of gym or
track training in the morning,
followed by an evening session
on the mat. The time in between
is spread between physio
sessions, rest, recovery, and
academics.
Who have been your biggest
influences in judo during
your training? How did they
inspire you?
I have always been inspired
by Ryoko Tamura of Japan, who
is by far the best female judoka
ever and has even been given
that title by the International Judo
Federation. She started very
young and has won five Olympic
medals including two gold. I look
up to her success and want to be
like her and win medals at the
Olympics for my country.
What’s next for you on the
sports front and what
upcoming events are you
preparing for?
I want to stick to the more
near-term targets that I have set
with my coach, Mamuka
Kizilashvili. I just won a gold at the
Asian Cadet Championships in
Taipei and I want to excel at the
Cadet World Championships
since this is my last year as a
cadet. For that, I might also be
going for a training camp to Japan
with some fellow IIS judoka, which
will be a huge exposure. My main
target is the 2024 Olympics in
Paris, which has also been a
long-term goal for me. The
upcoming 2020 Olympics isn’t a
realistic target for me as I still
need to work on certain areas to
be competing with the best in the
world. I will have lots of
opportunities to represent India
during the upcoming period and I
am focused on doing my best and
bring India a medal at the Paris
Olympic Games.

physical relationship adversely.
Often there were sleepless nights,
and the dryspell went on for almost
four months. I knew something had
to be done,” she said.
Kritika further goes on to say,
“I am aware that cosplay is not
really relevant in our society and
might even be frowned upon as a
kink by some. But it was a choice
that I had taken to reignite the
spark in my love life. My husband
and I love fantasy movies and
dressing up as a witch and a wizard
did unravel our sexual powers. Dim
lights, fine wine and lots of candles
were set in place to create the
perfect ambiance and as the night
passed, we were closer than ever.
Couples must take note, that even
though they might be hesitant to
try it out at first, with the added
prejudices set on this concept, they
must give it a shot, but with their
partners consent, of course. Now
that my husband and I have had a
taste of cosplay and the prowess it
holds, we don’t think there is any
