OBJECTIVES

1. To be able to manufacture a dustpan

2. To familiarize the students in the proper usage of a bending machine
3. To be able to apply all other bending methods as needed
4. To familiarize the students in working with machine hand tools

INTRODUCTION / THEORY

A dustpan is generally utilized as a cleaning utensil. The dustpan alone is

generally utilized along with a floor brush or long brush. The plan, structure, and
capacity were first created by Thomas E. McNeill who initially patented the
dustpan in July 6, 1858 and was later improved by African American designer Lloyd
Ray 40 years after the fact on August 3, 1897, including a patent for his improved
design.

Dustpan can be utilized for inside and outside purposes. Dustpans are
generally produced using substantial, adaptable plastic as well as from durable
metal or metal compounds, for example, tin. The principal structure of dustpans
may give off an impression of being a kind of a level scoop. One side of the
dustpan has a handle attached so that it can be easily held or picked up. Even
though they are made with shorter handle for home use, modern and business
endeavors utilize a hinged assortment with a longer handle to enable the user to
bend less while utilizing it. From that point forward, dustpans have turned into well-
known blend alongside a sweeper and are currently regularly utilized by individuals
when cleaning their homes.

MATERIALS, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT

Materials:

 1 piece 12" by 12" G.I. sheet

 Dustpan pattern drawing
Tools and Equipment:

 Bender – It is an equipment used for bending and folding the G.I. sheet.
 Tin snip – It is used for cutting the excess portions of the GI sheet.
 Try square – It is used in marking perpendicularly and measuring dimensions.
 Permanent marker – It is used for marking the outline on the GI sheet.

2
 Ball-peen hammer – It was used to shape and press the folded portions
more.
 Bench vise – It can be used to assist in hand bending the G.I. sheet.

DISCUSSION

4
The 12" by 12" G.I. sheet that is provided in order to form the main body of
the dustpan will not only be transformed into the desired shape, but must also be
maximized in order to lessen the amount that is needed to cut from the raw
material. This is done to reduce the waste material and contribute positively to the
environment. As the outline has been marked onto the sheet, it is important to
begin the bending from the outer dimensions into the inner folds. Bending the sheet
with the use of bender was done in our group by two members. One of them inserts
the sheet into the bender properly and is ready to lift the levers for bending, while
the other controls the lever on the side to lock the position of the sheet.
As the form of the dustpan has been acquired, all the necessary adjustments
such as correcting the angles of the bend was done by hand with the help of a
bench vise and the ball peen hammer. The partially bent portions of the dustpan
retract naturally so we were constantly trying to correct the angle of the bends
manually. Aside from the bender, the folds on the back part as well as the tuck
were finally done and adjusted with the aid of a bench vise.

PROCEDURE

1. Acquire and borrow the necessary materials and tools, respectively.

2. Analyze the given drawing pattern.
3. One to two members of the must make pattern using the given pattern for
dustpan and mark it using marker into the G.I sheet. Maximize the space by
extending the edges of the pattern to its corresponding edges onto the
metal sheet.
4. Using the pattern, trace them using the marker into the G.I sheet.
5. Using the tin snip, cut the tin sheet by following the pattern that is given.
6. Clean the surface as well as the edges of the sheet from any possible
residue of snipping the metal sheet.
7. In the bending part, two members of the group must work together to bend
the G.I sheet using the bender and start the bending process.
8. Bend first the outermost portions, then work your way into the inside of the
layout.
9. Use the ball-peen hammer and bench vise for bending portions requiring
light partial bends.
10. Mark the divisions assigned by the instructor onto the surface of the dustpan.
11. Secure any loose tuck and clean the surface of the workpiece before
submitting.
12. The work is ready to be submitted.
CONCLUSION

5
I therefore conclude that in manufacturing a simple dustpan, a process
called bending is the main principle that shall be applied in the manufacture.
Through the machine shop, the bending procedure is achieved through the use of
a bending machine or a bender that allows the thin metal sheet to be bent at
different angles and positions, up to folding to metal sheet completely. It is also
introduced that a bench vise, an equipment mainly used to clamp workpiece, can
also be utilized in aiding the worker in performing small bends onto the metal sheet.
These small bends are made using the bench vise because it is inconvenient to use
a large bender in performing such bends, and it will also be manageable and
accurate to hand bend small pieces rather than placing it into the bender.

RECOMMENDATIONS
1. In forming the dustpan shop practice, sharp corners could be a safety issue.
Incorporate safety measures and standards on the product.
2. Incorporate a concept of metalworking process on how to reduce the
sharpness of the corners of a bended metal sheet.
3. Pay attention in marking the materials with the marker. It will be difficult to
erase any incorrect markings if there are any, and these wrong markings
could cause confusion in snipping or bending the metal sheet.
4. Partial bends (such as 90 degrees) should be bent a little more because the
metal sheet will tend to bend back slightly, enough to end the retraction at
the desired angle.
