Located in a basement is the Longroom, a meeting space

which elicits sexual tension with a macabre twist by juxtaposing
seductive contemporary design elements with a 19th century
Oscar Wildesque inspired parlour. It is targeted at a sophisticated
female clientele which in turn attracts the big spenders - men. This
is achieved by providing defined eating (Sushi, Tapas), drinking,
and lounging zones with a mix of furniture and finishes that is
comfortable and appealing to a mature crowd.
Translucent, tactile and rich finishes are introduced to reminisce
and celebrate the seduction and elegance while found objects are
selected to allude to the past. Materials play an integral role in
defining various zones within this vast space. Wrought iron lace gates

are utilised to demarcate spaces, create intimate areas and secure
display zones. They visually link different spaces, enable a sense of
intentional voyeurism throughout the venue. Organza curtains /
sliding timber screens and raised floor levels further celebrate the
voyeuristic nature of the space by offering a touch of intimacy to the
user while remaining tantalisingly visible to the observer.
The use of passionate colours, rich timbers, ornate sliding gates
and generous displays of food and wine define the Tapas area.
The Tapas bar is inspired by the authentic Spanish experience
of displaying / serving food direct to and / or by the user. This
is achieved by introducing the large timber communal table
allowing a generous food display with immediacy to the area
where people naturally congregate to eat, drink and converse.
Horn chandeliers are a tongue in cheek reference to the Spanish
cultural display of bull horns. 薄纱帘和不同层高强化了空间在视觉上的相互渗透效果,既带给用家私密性,同时又让人隐约看到整个空间。

Organza curtains and raised floor levels celebrate the voyeuristic nature of the space by offering a touch of intimacy to the user while remaining tantalisingly visible to the observer.

Visual cues are taken from traditional Japanese culture in the Sushi
bar with the use of simple, light and honest finishes. Sliding timber
screens, bamboo, rice paper wallpaper and tatami matting are utilised
accordingly.
A mix of traditional and contemporary lounge seating in rich
fabrics and soft cushions are used in the carpeted lounge and
backroom areas. Soft lighting from modern chandeliers gives a
sense of comfort and intimacy and illuminates the ironic antique
sculptural elements which are located everywhere.
The heart of the space is a contemporary fire plinth utilising
ethanol flame burners. It is an integral focal point where people are
encouraged to congregate during inclement weather. Each space
has individual features such as the cognac display, feature mirrors,
chandeliers, sculptural pieces so that wherever the patron sits, there
is something of interest to observe.

The clients requested a ground-up building and interiors for this
Asian-fusion inspired restaurant where the design of the interior
would be modern and have an Asian influence, while the design
of the exterior would fit into the local vernacular. Although the
building is on a commercial thoroughfare, the surrounding area is
an affluent residential community on Philadelphia’s Main Line. The
prevalent architectural style is Dutch Colonial, original or revival,
clad in fieldstone and clapboard. The design of the restaurant
facade pays homage to the local vernacular, yet the designers
were also inspired by the clean lines of mid-century residential
architecture of Wright and Neutra.
While the stonework is carried into the interior of the restaurant,
the design clearly becomes modern. The interior design concept is
a “temple for dining”. The space is broken down into several areas:
Bar, Sushi Counter, Main Dining, Adjunct Dining (which doubles as a
function room) and Mezzanine Dining. A giant glass panel separates

Opposite attraction! A study in contrasts - modern meets baroque

- is the restaurant in an art deco office building (circa 1929) in
the historic Washington Square. The restaurant space
occupies half of the ground floor and includes a private garden
used for dining and as an outdoor “lounge”. It also acts as the
access path to the restaurant entry.
The exterior garden is neutral in colour, with modern and simple
furnishings and a white bar. The perimeter walls have a full range

the garden, it is clear that the teak flooring and furniture covered
with white canvas cushions are organized very symmetrically from
front to back in the middle of the space. Even the reflecting pool
with its galvanized container and white river rock interior fits into
the scheme. This study in white and teak is completed at the end of
the garden with a white concrete exterior back and a white trellis
screen on translucent lexan. In contrast to this modern architecture,
the sidewalls are covered in lush English ivy, and within the green
walls are seating groups saturated with colours and pattern. Each
niche has a different colour scheme and the back walls are made of
patterned concrete tiles inspired by Moroccan designs but done in
an almost pop art manner.
Part of the restaurant is in the space of the two main original
“galleries”, in which the original walnut paneling is restored. Wood
paneling and moldings are added in this area to create a seamless
design between the historic area and the new.
The first interior space after the garden is the first dining room. Upon
entering, guests will be taken to their table in this area, the blue
dining room or the main dining hall adjacent to the Kitchen. They
can also be directed to the Lounge. Still set within the classic walnut
paneled gallery space is the “Blue Room”. This royal blue “suite” feels
opulent with its two 3.65m long baroque sofas and is surrounded by
an iridescent blue shimmery fabric to create a sense of privacy and
sex appeal. The main dining room is a more flexible version of the
front room. Instead of fixed screens, the screens are made of a woven
Bergamo fabric which can be slide away to make a bigger room for a
cocktail party or private function.
The lounge for the restaurant takes up half of the grand office-
building lobby. This, too, is transformed dramatically to fuse with
the mood of the entire restaurant design.

for both regular dine-ins and wedding parties. The recent trend
in Japan is to have wedding parties held in restaurants instead of

To design a restaurant that can accommodate both regular dine-ins

require different settings which should not be too elegant or formal
for casual diners nor too basic or common for grand parties.
Designer Yasumichi Morita has chosen to make this restaurant
ELEGANT and DRAMATIC. He employed the use of chandelier

for grand interior. To one’s surprise, the chandelier is not three-
dimensional nor a fixture that is normally hung from the ceiling.
It is flat on the wall. This flat crystals creates an atmosphere which

Starting with the concept of liquid, Robert D. Henry Architects

designed a space where every detail contributes to the experience.
Along Columbus Avenue, six effervescent water windows encased
in steal shrouds blur one’s vision in and out of the space. This
aquatic atmosphere brings tranquility to the space instilling
a hypnotic peacefulness upon its visitors. Beyond the water
windows, a soft sinuous chaise longue provides convivial seating.
Across the lounge rests a curved bar made of cobalt glass mosaic

the street; two organic elements are sandwiched between two
rectilinear steel layers, both of which contain precious liquids.
Aquamarine light escapes from discreet steel entry, while glowing
windows announce the interior watery presence to the street.
The liquid theme is further enhanced through the preparation of
layered “potions”. Poured from the illuminated coloured bottles as .

Situated in the historic centre of Maastricht, Witloof is a

new restaurant serving Belgian cuisine. The concept of Maurice
Mentjens was prompted by a visit to the cities of Antwerp and
Ghent. The striking thing about Belgian cafes and restaurants is
the often incongruous mix of styles and interior elements. One
would get the impression that everything has been built up bit
by bit over the years, and that all sorts of bric-a-brac has been
added.
Maurice did not translate this too literally in the interior design.
Instead, he came up with his interpretation by combining three
interiors that typify Belgian cafes and restaurants. The entrance area
resembles a log cabin in the Ardennes. The next section is decorated

The white tiled section features three sansevieria plants in tiled
blocks on the wall, as well as a white tiled bar. This bar has a backdrop
of cupboards and shelves set in golden baroque frames. This area
leads through to the Salon which is connected to the cellar by a
spiral staircase. This staircase is separated from the restaurant by a
black wrought-iron gate. Behind this gate are the black doors of the
lavatory rooms, with heart-shaped openings in the doors showing
the red and yellow interiors of the gentlemen’s and ladies’ lavatories
respectively. These also represent the colours of the Belgian flag.
The cellar, dating from the late Middle Ages, is painted completely
in black with black floor tiles and a neo-gothic floral motif in broken
white. This motif is echoed in high gloss black on the black matt
walls. You could imagine yourself in a forest at night, or in a chapel
or crypt. These images are
further reinforced by the

The Kookaburra in Bochum is an Australian cafe bar. The
concept of designing this restaurant in an irregular site is to divide
the area into two zones - the lounge and the restaurant - each
with a distinctive atmosphere. The freestanding bar establishes
a connection between the lounge and the dining area with a
wide cut-out in the back buffet that allows glimpses of the rooms
behind.
The classic-austere restaurant area is housed in a single-storey
pavilion formerly used for industrial purposes. With generous
glazing, it opens up to a view of the Bochum Sudring. Linear rows
of tables along a 21m-long bistro bench with a sideboard, together
with the light oak flooring and fitted furniture form the setting.
With generous rounded seats and integrated side tables, the rear
lounge is a cozy and comfortable area for relaxing or lounging in.

the lounge a special sunrise and sunset atmosphere. Illuminated

restaurant’s major clientele are the intellects around the area as
well as corporate customers in the building where it is situated.
Therefore, the design team has captured the essence of“education”
throughout the project. As a result, the Chinese classics of “four
treasures of scholarship - paper, brush, ink and ink stone” are
extracted as the inspiration of the design. 主层平面图

employed throughout the restaurant providing a neutral and subtle
backdrop for the design. A giant column wrapped by approximately
820 Chinese calligraphy brushes is created at the entry to give
customers an immediate cultural impact upon arrival. Water features
derived from “ink” is incorporated in various locations to divide the
space either horizontally or vertically. Platformed private rooms
derived from “ink stone” are segregated by water and glamorized
with stainless steel chips. Scrolls of textured paper are translated
into panels made from wood and stainless steel in the Book Rooms
on the main level as well as the general dining area on the mezzanine
level.
The restaurant has a maximum capacity for 420 people. There
are three types of VIP rooms with different decors: the Pavilion,
the Book Rooms and the Lounge Room. The Pavilion is inspired
by classic Chinese literature where scholars studied in the open-
air pavilions floating on water. Materials used in these rooms are
glass, stone and faux grass to resemble an outdoor atmosphere
while the metal chips ceiling mimics the sound of rain and
flowing water. Book Rooms are covered with overlapping sheets
of wooden panels which are reminiscent of pages of an open
book. The Lounge Room is entirely draped with two layers of sheer
fabric penetrating from the ceiling to the floor. It is inspired by
the music and dance elements of Chinese culture where fabrics
are commonly used and airiness is ultimately created.
“Spice” is always a design concept for South Beauty Restaurant. In
this particular project, contrast between light and dark is the key
design element to express this concept. This is achieved by using
metallic materials with reflective paints. On the other hand, gold
- as an important heritage colour from previous projects - is also
extensively applied in the space.

CL3’s concept is to create a luxurious and seductive dining

environment by using a contemporary design approach to
transform the traditional Japanese elements into a sophisticated
and chic interior.
Instead of a traditional Japanese pond or garden, there is a crystal
glass rock garden sitting on a dark glass mirror platform. Coordinated
with a full-height hand painted gold leaf backlit glass wall inside
with traditional Japanese ripple sand wall finishes, an eye-catching
and impressive entrance is created, forming the signature of the
restaurant.

Inside the general dining area which has a headroom of 4.7m, there
are eight custom-made white acrylic pendants of different heights
hung from the light beige big circular recessed ceiling in ash wood,
like a sculpture. The lighting turns to red at night to project a dramatic
effect.
Another key feature in the general dining is the seven hand-made
silky laminated glass partitions which divide the sushi bar and the
semi-private area. Pattern used is the pine tree whose evergreen
characteristic matches the client’s requirement. At night, the
translucent silky glass panels are highlighted, making the pattern
more outstanding. The champagne gold timber panelling with
translucent lighting through the pattern gaps serve as a backdrop
for the sushi chefs when they perform their “art”. On the other
hand, the sushi bar counter in red lacquer well defines the bar
area from the rest.
Dark brown wall finishes and champagne gold metal window
treatments are extended from the outside corridor to the Teppanyaki
rooms. The main focus in the room is the long Teppan counter made of
dark stone which can cater for 12 people. Flooring is natural bamboo
with carpeting in the middle to soften the hardness of the finishes.
The VIP room can be divided into two. The metallic hand-painted
glass pattern tiles on the back wall create a contemporary appeal.
The ceiling design is inspired
by traditional Japanese pattern

entrance stairway, these references are repeated throughout the

Centred around a huge hollow square bar internally lit in glowing
chartreuse, the main floor’s single large open lounge area leads
to a dazzling dance floor, overlooked by the second lounge on the
mezzanine.
Connecting the main and mezzanine lounges is a simple concrete
staircase suspended against a full height gloss-finished wall
washed with colour-changing lights. Uninterrupted by vertical
supports, the glass balustrade supports the surface-mounted, UV-

the stairs, the striking Italian-designed “Tomato Chair” acts as a
sculptural accent.
The simply detailed, pure white, low profile furnishings on the
mezzanine repeat the hollow square layout of the main floor bar.
Against one perimeter wall, an astonishing chartreuse digital
supergraphic is slashed by a narrow horizontal slot of pure green
light just above the back of the long narrow banquette seating.
Opposite, a 9m internally lit bar is backed by a shallow counter in
white epoxy lacquer, topped by an integrated stainless drink rail
and bottle display surface that curves up to the ceiling to frame the
mirrored wall above. Once again, the names of sins sandblasted into

matched by the downlighting on the bottle display.

Located along one of Stuttgart biggest streets, the design of the
bar focuses on the interaction between the inside and outside,

become part of it.
