SY BTECH SEMESTER - IV 2018-2019 EXAMINATION
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
IN COURSE EXAMINATION
FLUID MECHANICS
TIME : 2 HOURS MAX MARKS : 50 MARKS
TOTAL NO OF QUESTIONS: 5 TOTAL NO OF PRINTED PAGES: 3
INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES:
1. Assume suitable data wherever necessary
2. Non programmable scientific calculators are allowed
3. Black figures to the right indicate full marks

1 a) How to differentiate Newtonian & Non Newtonian fluid. [4] CO1 L1

Explain the types of Non Newtonian fluid with it's plot
on stress vs rate of strain. (Diference:1M, Explation of
any three sub-type with plot:3M)
b) The clutch system shown in Figure is used to transmit [6] CO3 L4
torque through a 3mm thick oil film with viscosity of
0.38 Ns/m 2 between two identical 30cm diameter
disks. When the driving shaft rotates at a speed of
1450 rpm , the driven shaft is observed to rotate at
1398 rpm(Both are rotating in same direction) .
Assuming a linear velocity profile for the oil film,
determine the transmitted torque. (Equation of
viscosity:1M, Torque formula:3M, Torque:2M)

[1]
2 a) State the Archemedis Principle. Explain with neat [4] CO1 L2
sketches the condition of equilibrium for submerged
bodies.(Correct statement:1M, Equilibrium
conditions:3M)
b) Consider a heavy car submerged in water in a lake [6] CO5 L5
with a flat bottom. The driver’s side door of the car is
1.1 m high and 0.9 m wide, and the top edge of the
door is 8 m below the water surface. Determine the
net force acting on the door (normal to its surface) and
the location of the center of pressure if (a) the car is
well-sealed and it contains air at atmospheric pressure
and (b) the car is filled with lake water. (Force:2M,
Centre of Pressure:2M, case(a):1M,case(b):1M)

3 a) Discuss any four types of flow with examples.(Each [4] CO2 L2

type 1M)
b) Stream function is defined as [6] CO2 L3
φ = x3 - 3(xy)2
show that flow is possible, Determine whether the flow
is rotational or not. Also deduce the expression of
velocity potential. (Possible flow:1M, Rotational or not
:1M, Expression of velocity potential with all steps
:4M)
4 a) Explain the deformation of fluid element with [4] CO1 L2
mathematical expression (Each type 1M)
b) A lawn sprinkler has two nozzles of diameters 8mm [6] CO4 L3
each at the end of a rotating arm and the velocity of
flow of water from each nozzle is 12m/s . One nozzle
discharges water in the downward direction, while the
other nozzle discharges vertically up. The nozzles are
at a distance of 40cm from the centre of the rotating
arm. Determine the torque required to hold the rotating
arm stationary. Also determine the constant speed of
rotation of arm, if it is free to rotate.(Torque:3M, Speed
of rotation:3M)

[2]
5 a) The discharge coefficients of a venturimeter & [4] CO4 L3
orificemeter both installed on a pipe of internal
diameter 100mm , are 0.95 & 0.65 respectively. The
venturimeter throat diameter is the same as the orifice
diameter. If the pressure drop across the orificemeter
is measured as 300mm of water column. Find the
corresponding pressure drop for venturimeter in mm of
water column.

b) Find an expression for the time required to empty a [6] CO2 L3

tank of area of cross section A, with an orifice at it's
bottom.(Neat Sketch:1M, Correct derivation with all
the steps: 5M)
