CLAMP METER

A. Definition of Clamp Meter

Clamp meter is an electrical instrument that is used to measure the electric current
without disconnecting the circuit just like when we use the multimeter.

B. The Function of Clamp Meter

The main function of clamp meter is of course to measure the electric current both AC
& DC current, but clamp meter can also be used to measure the AC or DC voltage and
also resistance of conductor.

C. Type of Clamp Meter

Three types of clamp meters exist:
 Current transformer clamp meters:measure only alternating current (ac).

 Hall Effect clamp meters: measure both alternating current and direct current
(ac and dc).
 Flexible clamp meters: use a Rogowski coil; measure ac only; good for
measuring in tight spaces.

D. Part of Clamp Meter

1. Transformer Clamps (Jaws)

It senses the magnetic field of the current flowing through the conductor.
2. Clamp Opening Trigger
It is used to open/ close the clamps.
3. Power Switch
As the name suggests, it is used to power on/ off the meter.
4. Back Light Button
It is used to light up the LCD display for easy reading of displayed value in
dark places or at night.
5. Hold Button
It is used to hold the last value on the display.
6. Negative/ Ground Input Terminal
It is used to connect the negative/ ground jack of the meter cable.
7. Positive Input Terminal
It is used to connect the positive jack of the meter cable.
8. LCD Display
It displays the measured value.
9. Functional Rotary Switch
It is used to select the the type and range of current being measured.

E. The step of using clamp meter

These are the step to follow while using clamp meter to measure electric current :
 Step 1
Switch ON the meter and remove the probes (if attached)
 Step 2
Select the AC current or DC current function by using the functional rotary
switch.
 Step 3
Open the jaws by using clamp opening trigger and insert the conductor
through which the current is to be measured
 Step 4
Then close the jaws and try to adjust the conductor in the center of the clamp
 Step 5
The display will show the appropriate reading.
 Note : Keep it in mind that current of only one cable to be measured at one
time.
