Prelude
(The people stand.)

Processional Hymn: 388 - O worship the King

Words: Robert Grant (1779-1838)

Music: Hanover, att. William Croft (1678-1727)

Celebrant Let us pray.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are
hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love
thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 2
The Decalogue
GOD spake these words, and said: I am the LORD thy God; Thou shalt have none other gods but me.
Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above,
or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth; thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship
them;
Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain;
Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Honour thy father and thy mother;

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt do no murder.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not steal.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Thou shalt not covet

Lord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

O ALMIGHTY Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we beseech thee, to direct, sanctify, and
govern, both our hearts and bodies, in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments;
that, through thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul;
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Celebrant Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day

ALMIGHTY God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both
outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities that
may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Collect for Lent

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made and dost forgive the sins
of all those who are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily
lamenting our sins and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy,
perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee
and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Lesson is written in the twelfth chapter of the Book of Genesis, beginning at the first verse.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house
to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make
your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors
you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five
years old when he departed from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and
all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they
set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the
land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land. Then
the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an
altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel
and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to
the Lord and called upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.
Here endeth the Lesson.

Psalm 33:12-22 J. Blow Setting

Blessed is the nation whose God | is the Lord,

the people whom he has chosen | as his heritage!
The Lord looks | down from heaven;
he sees | all the children of man;
from where he sits enthroned | he looks out
on all the in- | habitants of the earth,
he who fashions the hearts | of them all
and ob | serves all their deeds.
The king is not saved by | his great army;
a warrior is not de- | livered by his great strength.
The war horse is a false hope | for salvation,
and by its great | might it cannot rescue.
Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those | who fear him,
on those who hope | in his steadfast love,
that he may deliver their | soul from death
and keep | them alive in famine.
Our soul waits | for the Lord;
he is | our help and our shield.
For our heart is | glad in him,
because we trust | in his holy name.
Let your steadfast love, O Lord, | be upon us,
even | as we hope in you.

(The people sit.)

The Epistle is written in the fourth chapter of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, beginning at the first
verse.
What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For
if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what
does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to
Page 5
the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not
work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David
also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,

and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”

Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that
faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after
he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of
circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The
purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that
righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who
are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham
had before he was circumcised.
For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come
through the law but through the righteousness of faith. For if it is the adherents of the law who are to
be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath, but where there is no
law there is no transgression.
That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed
to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of
Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”—
in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the
things that do not exist.
Here endeth the Epistle.

Gospel Hymn: 479 - Glory be to Jesus

Page 6
The Holy Gospel is written in the third chapter of the Gospel According to St. John, beginning at
the first verse.
People Glory be to thee, O Lord.
There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by
night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these
signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one
is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born
when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?” Jesus
answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do
not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear
its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is
born of the Spirit.”
Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher
of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we
know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you
earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one
has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And as Moses lifted
up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may
have eternal life.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should
not perish but have eternal life.”
People Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Page 7
The Nicene Creed
(The people stand.)
I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things
visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of
his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not
made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men
and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the
Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He
suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And
ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with
glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe
in the Holy Ghost, the Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son;
Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the
Prophets: And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the
remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come.
Amen.

The Offertory Sentence

(The people stand until the ushers have handed the bread and wine to the acolyte.)
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves
break through and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust
doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. (St. Matthew vi.19,20)

(The people sit.)

Offertory Anthem 9:00 a.m. - St. George's Choir

God So Loved the World
J. Goss
God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not
perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the
world through him might be saved.

Offertory Anthem 11:00 a.m. - St. Gabriel's Choir

O Mysterium Ineffabile

O unspeakable mystery; O wonderful sacrament of love; O marvel of goodness, O miracle of holiness;

O love, O holiness; O joy of feasts; O happiness of fellowship.

At the Presentation

Then the Celebrant shall say,

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and
supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our
alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty;
beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and
concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy
Word, and live in unity and godly love.

We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian rulers, that they may truly
and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance
of thy true religion, and virtue.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all Bishops and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life
and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments.

And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; [and especially ____] and to this congregation here
present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly
serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

Page 9
And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who,
in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, [especially ____].

And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear, [especially
____]; beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service, and to give us grace
so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant
this, O Father, for Jesus Christ’s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen.

Then the Celebrant shall say,

YE who do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors,
and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in
his holy ways: Draw near with faith, and take this holy Sacrament to your comfort; and make your
humble confession to Almighty God, devoutly kneeling.

ALMIGHTY God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Maker of all things, Judge of all men; We
acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, Which we, from time to time, most
grievously have committed, By thought, word, and deed, Against thy Divine Majesty,
Provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, And are
heartily sorry for these our misdoings; The remembrance of them is grievous unto us; The
burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father;
For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, Forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever
hereafter Serve and please thee In newness of life, To the honour and glory of thy Name;
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, stands and says,

ALMIGHTY God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to
all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon you, pardon and
deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting
life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all who truly turn to him.
COME unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you. (Matthew 11:28)

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him
should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)

Hear also what Saint Paul saith.

This is a true saying, and worthy of all men to be received, That Christ Jesus came into the world to
save sinners. (1 Timothy 1:15)

Page 10
Hear also what Saint John saith.
If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; and he is the
Propitiation for our sins. (1 John 2:1-2)

Celebrant Lift up your hearts.

People We lift them up unto the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.
People It is meet and right so to do.

IT is very meet, right, and our bounden duty that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks
unto thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God.

THEREFORE with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify
thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying,

Sanctus Merbecke

ALL glory be to thee, Almighty God, our heavenly Father, for that thou, of thy tender mercy, didst
give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there,
by his one oblation of himself once offered, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice, oblation, and
satisfaction, for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to
continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in
the night in which he was betrayed, he took Bread; and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and
gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you; Do this in
remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the Cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave
it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for
you, and for many, for the remission of sins; Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of
me.

WHEREFORE, O Lord and heavenly Father, according to the institution of thy dearly beloved Son
our Saviour Jesus Christ, we, thy humble servants, do celebrate and make here before thy Divine
Majesty, with these thy holy gifts, which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath

Page 11
commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty
resurrection and glorious ascension; rendering unto thee most hearty thanks for the innumerable
benefits procured unto us by the same.

AND we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us; and, of thy almighty goodness,
vouchsafe to bless and sanctify, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, these thy gifts and creatures of bread
and wine; that we, receiving them according to thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s holy institution, in
remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed Body and Blood.

AND we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this our sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving; most humbly beseeching thee to grant that, by the merits and death of thy Son Jesus
Christ, and through faith in his blood, we, and all thy whole Church, may obtain remission of our sins,
and all other benefits of his passion. And here we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our
souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee; humbly beseeching thee that
we, and all others who shall be partakers of this Holy Communion, may worthily receive the most
precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction,
and made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And although we are unworthy,
through our manifold sins, to offer unto thee any sacrifice; yet we beseech thee to accept this our
bounden duty and service, not weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses, through Jesus Christ
our Lord; By whom, and with whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, all honour and glory be unto thee,
O Father Almighty, world without end. Amen.

And now, as our Saviour Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say –

OUR Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As
we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

WE do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own
righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather
up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have
mercy: Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and
to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed
through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

Administration of Holy Communion

It is the custom of this Church that all baptized persons who come in faith and penitence are welcome
to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. One may receive the wine either by intinction (dipping
the wafer in the cup) or drinking it directly from the common cup. Children and adults who do not wish
to receive Communion may come for a blessing, signifying this by crossing your arms across your chest.
(Consecrated gluten-free wafers are available simply by indicating the need for such to the priest.)

(The congregation is encouraged to join in singing the hymns.)

Then the Celebrant shall say,
Let us pray.

(The people kneel.)

ALMIGHTY and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to
feed us who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious
Body and Blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour
and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of
thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of
thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of his most precious death and passion. And we humbly
beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy
fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without
end. Amen.

(The people remain kneeling.)

O Saving Victim

(The people continue to kneel.)

The Bishop when present, or the Priest, gives the blessing

THE Peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge
and love of God, and of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord: and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father,
the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be amongst you, and remain with you always. Amen.
