Taller de Eras Geologicas
FECHA 12/07/2018
A través del simulador de las eras geológicas, el equipo desarrollará la totalidad del taller, indicando
por cada miembro del equipo su participación y compromiso con el taller.

- Click "pause" before the slider reaches the bottom of the timeline. Note that your chosen
chart will show a demarcation in the data for that point in time.
- Close your chart in EarthViewer by clicking on the "X" in the upper right-hand corner.
2. Make sure the timeline displays 0–540 million years and then click on "View" at the bottom of the
screen; turn on "Mass Extinctions." Click "View" again to minimize the menu. 5. Note the five yellow
triangles that appear on the right side of the timeline. These correspond to mass extinctions.
Gather data: Drag the slider to the Ordovician extinction, 440 MYA. Use the EarthViewer features to
fill in the following chart. For Biodiversity, you will need to move the slider carefully and record the
number of marine genera present just before and just after the extinction event.
Gather data in the same manner for the remaining four mass extinctions.
a. Do any patterns and correlations emerge from your chart? Does any of the data suggest an
explanation for the occurrence of mass extinctions?
b. Calculate the biodiversity loss in each extinction and report in terms of percent.

1. Over the last 540 million years, icecaps covered at least one of the Earth’s poles during three
intervals.
a. When were those intervals?

__________________________________________
__________________________________________
b. Use the CHART button to find an approximate temperature range for the three intervals.
__________________________________________________________
3. Use a spread gesture on the timeline until you see only the last 100 years.
a. What do the colors on the globe represent?
_________________________________________________________________
b. What was the average global temperature for the period 1951-1980? ________
c. Based on the temperature chart, how much has the Earth warmed in the last 100 years?
________________________________________________________
d. Tap each of the variables on the top chart and describe the trend in relation to temperature.
example: % Oxygen in the atmosphere has remained constant as the temperature has increased.
Carbon dioxide ___________________________________________________
Day Length _______________________________________________________
Luminosity _______________________________________________________
Biodiversity ______________________________________________________
4. Based on the average global temperature and the trend over the last 100 years, how many years
will it take until we are outside of the range you identified in Q1b?
