As a young man Alvester moved to Miami and lived with his eldest sister in order to attend
Miami Northwestern Senior High School where he played trumpet in the marching band;
however, he returned to Union Springs in 1958 to complete his Senior Year at Carver High
School. During that time he met and married his high school sweet heart on January 27, 1959.
Soon after the birth of their rst child Alvester moved his young family back to Miami in 1962
where he began working in the construction industry in order to support his family. Between
1964 through 1966 he worked for the City of North Bay Village in various positions, where he
was able to save enough money to purchase a home in 1966 for his growing family.

Alvester was an entrepreneur and started his own construction company in 1966, which
allowed him the ability to provide a comfortable life for his wife and four (4) children. He
believed in the importance of hard work, excellence and strong family values, which was
evident in how he lived and raised his children. He instilled in his children the importance of
faith, and family and enjoyed camping trips, many vacations, and family gatherings in order to
keep his family connected. His mantra, “Your Word is Your Bond.”

Alvester began attending Mount Herman AME Church of Opa-Locka, Florida in 1970 and later
joined under the leadership of Reverand C.E. Jenkins. In October of 2014 Alvester and his wife
joined Greater New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where he attended faithfully until his
untimely death on Sunday, August 23, 2015.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 56 ½ years, Mrs. Bettye Marie Cox-Martin; four (4)
children, Mr. Alvester Martin, Jr. (Stephanie), Marietta, GA., Dr. Dildra Martin-Ogburn (Reggie),
