SAFETY
FOLLOW SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
• Carefully read and follow all safety signs on the machine
and all safety messages in this manual.
• Safety signs should be installed, maintained and
replaced when necessary.
• If a safety sign or this manual is damaged or missing,
order a replacement from your authorized dealer in the
same way you order other replacement parts (be sure
to state machine model and serial number when
ordering).
• Learn how to operate the machine and its controls
correctly and safely.
• Allow only trained, qualified, authorized personnel to SA-003
operate the machine.
• Keep your machine in proper working condition.
• Unauthorized modifications of the machine may impair
its function and/or safety and affect machine life.
• Do not modify any machine parts without authorization.
Failure to do so may deteriorate the part safety,
function, and/or service life. In addition, personal
accident, machine trouble, and/or damage to material
caused by unauthorized modifications will void Hitachi
Warranty Policy.
• Do not use attachments and/or optional parts or
equipment not authorized by Hitachi. Failure to do so
may deteriorate the safety, function, and/or service life
of the machine. In addition, personal accident, machine
trouble, and/or damage to material caused by using
unauthorized attachments and/or optional parts or
equipment will void Hitachi Warranty Policy.
• The safety messages in this SAFETY chapter are
intended to illustrate basic safety procedures of
machines. However it is impossible for these safety
messages to cover every hazardous situation you may
encounter. If you have any questions, you should first
consult your supervisor and/or your authorized dealer
before operating or performing maintenance work on the
machine.

• Check that the alarm buzzer sounds when the
boom is lowered to 75°. If not, immediately
repair it before operating the machine.
• Be sure to install the specified additional
counterweight.
• Use a crusher with a weight of less than the
maximum specified weight.
• Operate the machine within the specified
working range.
• Do not operate the machine on slopes and/or
crushed material. Be sure to operate the
machine only on solid level ground.
• Always be careful that the ground does not
subside and/or collapse due to reaction force
of operation.
• Quick operation may cause the machine to tip

work plan so that the machine can be slowly
operated.
• Do not grasp and lift the crashed materials. The
machine stability will be reduced, possibly
resulting in tipping over of the machine.

Place the Power mode switch into “P” or “E”.
Always select the slow speed mode with the
travel mode switch. In the auto-idle mode or the
auto-accelerator mode, speed may
automatically increase.
• Make sure that the travel mode switch is kept in
the slow selection.
• Never steer while driving up or down a ramp as
it is extremely dangerous and may cause the
machine to turnover. NEVER attempt to change
directions whilst positioned on the ramp. If
repositioning is necessary, first move back to
the ground or flatbed, modify traveling
direction, and begin to drive again.
• The top end of the ramp where it meets the
flatbed is a sudden bump. Take care as the
center of gravity of the unit travels over it.
• Never attempt to swing the upper structure
when the machine is on a trailer flatbed. It is
very dangerous and can cause the machine to

EXCHANGE THE LONG FRONT ATTACHMENT
FOR THE BACKHOE FRONT ATTACHMENT
CAUTION:
• After installing the backhoe front attachment,
be sure to check the movement of each
hydraulic cylinder by slowly operating the
control levers and pedals respectively. Refer to
the Operator's Manual for each model for
backhoe front attachment operation.
• When the backhoe front attachment is installed,
be sure to modify the pilot oil pipe line
connections. Failure to do so may cause
improper operation of the front attachment,
possibly resulting in personal accidents.
• Retighten the standard counterweight
mounting bolts before operating the machine.
Consult your nearest Hitachi Dealer for the
retightening method.
• When the backhoe front attachment is installed,
hydraulic hoses to the intermediate arm
cylinder, crusher open/close cylinder, and
crusher swing motor (optional) are not used.
Securely install the attached plugs into the
hose end connectors.
• After installing the backhoe front attachment,
secure the control pedals to the pedal locks so
that they do not move back and forth. (Refer to
the Control Pedal group.)
IMPORTANT:
• If the machine equipped with the backhoe front
attachment is operated without removing the
additional counterweight, the frame and/or the
additional counterweight may be damaged. Be
sure to remove the additional counterweigh or
replace the increased weight one-unit type
counterweight with the standard counterweigh.
Failure to do so may result in damage to the
frame and the additional counterweight.
• After installing the backhoe front attachment,
be sure to check the hydraulic oil level. Refer to
E
the Operator's Manual for each model for the
checking method.
1. When replacing the front attachment, a lot of air will F
be mixed in the hydraulic circuit. Bleed air from each
hydraulic cylinder.
2. Turn the boom angle alarm buzzer switch OFF.
3. Modify the pilot oil pipe line connections.
If the long front attachment is installed without modifying M16J-06-048

STORAGE
PRECAUTIONS FOR LONG TERM MACHINE STORAGE
In case the machine is to be stored for longer than one month, pay attention to the following points to prepare next
operation.
NOTE: Lubrication operation is a series of warm-up, travel, swing and front attachment operation to repeatedly
cycle each function a few times.
Lubricants will deteriorate during long term storage of the machine. Be sure to carefully check the
lubricants before restarting operation of the machine.
