RECOMMENDATION REPORT:
Jesse Morrow
ii
Executive Summary
This recommendation is for you, Jesse Morrow, a Construction Management Major at
North Dakota State University, and is to help you decide between your three job listings,
Laborer with Burchill Construction in Wahpeton, North Dakota, Carpenter with Roers
Construction in Fargo, ND, and Project Manager with Cofells Plumping Heating Excavating Inc.
in Bismarck, ND. Based on what you said in our interview about your wants and needs in your
future job and knowing who you are and being able to tell what kind of job you want, I have
concluded that you should take the Carpenter position with Roers Construction.
Being a big company, but not a huge company, they will give you the best chance to
move up in your career like you have told me you would like to do. There would be no need to
reacquaint yourself with a new area because the position is in Fargo, where you go to school. I

Introduction
In this report, I am going to help a fellow classmate, a friend, and a former teammate of
mine find a potential career starting job. You, Jesse Morrow, are deciding between three
different companies to work for when you have finished your schooling . With this report I hope
to save you some time in researching all three companies and also make my personal
You are currently in your third year at North Dakota State University pursuing a major
degree in Construction Management with a minor degree in Business. Along with being a
fulltime student, you are also a pole-vaulter for the NDSU track team . Being a former teammate
of yours, I know how hard it is to keep up with school as track takes up almost 3 hours of
everyday. But you have obviously been able to figure this out by being highly motivated and
I had a chance to make up a questionnaire for you to fill out and to also interview you
about your career motives and goals. The reason you got involved with the idea of having a
construction related job was because your uncle is a General Contractor down in Colorado . You
always enjoyed going to visit and watch your uncle do the different projects .
Even though the construction industry is one of the biggest industries and has the most
jobs, you would like to be with a relatively smaller company to start with and stay in the
1
Midwest. You want to stay moderately close to your family, who live in Watertown, South
Dakota. You said you would be willing to move around a bit for your first couple years if the job
insists it, but would like to end up in a steady and secure position near home . You don’t want to
stay around home just because of family though. You are an avid hunter and like you said, “No
other state has more pheasants than South Dakota” (Morrow). Considering all the criteria you
have given me about your ideal job, I broke down each job so you can see the details of each
company.

Job Opportunities
Burchill Construction
Burchill Construction has a Construction Laborer position open. Burchill is located in the
south eastern part of North Dakota, in Wahpeton. They are a relatively smaller company, being
locally owned and founded by two brothers. Their main focus is on designing and building
homes but they also do work in remodeling existing homes and installing new windows . You
were drawn to this company because it is smaller than big multi-state companies and because
Burchill really prides themselves on their custom cabinets. “Not only can we design the
custom kitchen of your dreams but we can provide and install hard to find fireplace mantels,
woodwork for abnormal shaped windows, custom bookshelves for your library, built ins for
entertainment centers and soo much more”(Burchill). This is why you were really attracted to
this company; they do a lot of custom work and take pride in themselves for it. They also offer
time they are out of Fargo, ND. They are offering you a carpenter position, “…seeking
individuals with wood framing experience.” (JobsND). You do have framing experience through
your schooling. Roers started out in 1976 as a smaller residential contracting company . Over
3
the 30+ years it has been in business, it has grown into a general construction company with
over 100 employees. This is something you said you would like to eventually build up to. On
their website Roers stated, “RCI has special expertise in the areas of design-build, commercial,
to you in different classes and in our interview, this is something I think you would like because
they do so many different things that you would never get bored.
Besides just being in the construction industry, Roers also does land development,
Property Management, and Commercial and Residential Real Estate . This is good for you
because if you find yourself not liking the position you are in you can always try a different field,
on plumbing and heating and air. They come into play after most of a construction project has
been completed. They are mostly subcontractors that do work for bigger, general contractors .
Yes, it is a managing position like you said you would want, but after talking to you and getting
to know you, I don’t think this is the right job for you . You told me you wanted to be involved in
the whole project and with this company you would not have that opportunity .

Locations
In our interview, you said you would like to stay reasonably close to home which is
Watertown, South Dakota. Also, talking to you in class and knowing a little about who you are, I
know that you like to go hunting quite a bit. So I am going to break down each location and try
and make it easier to decide a job. And since you are from South Dakota and don’t know any
land owners in North Dakota yet, I have figured out where the nearest public land to go hunting
is. Each graph will have to distance and time from the respected city to your home in
Watertown, and the distance and time from the city to some of the closest cities with public
land. All numbers come from Google Maps. Locations of nearest public land came from the

your wants and needs in a job, I have concluded that the carpenter position with Roers
Construction Inc. in Fargo, North Dakota would be the best choice for you . This position with
Roers will give you a chance to start out in a lower position, learn to the company trade and be
able to move your way up and possibly become a contractor like you want .
6
The other two jobs, Cofells and Burchill, would be good jobs but I don’t think you would
enjoy them as much as the Roers position. Even though the eastern part of North Dakota is not
well known for its hunting, you can always go back to Watertown and hunt or come with me to
land I know. Whichever job you choose, I’m sure you will make the best out of it. Good Luck!
