MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION-2015, SESSION: 2015-2016 (SPRING),

B.Tech, 3rd Semester

Subject code: EE307 Subject name: Electrical Machine Dept. Code: EE

No. of pages: 1 Full Marks: 30 Duration: 2 Hours
Instructions:
1) Each question carry 10 marks
2) Answer any 3 questions

Q. No. Particulars
1. a) Derive an expression for rotating magnetic field produced by the stator of a 3 Φ induction motor.
Briefly explain how a rotating magnetic field is produced in a 3 Φ induction motor.

b)Explain the principle of operation of a 3 phase induction machine

2. a) Draw the equivalent circuit model of a 3 phase induction machine

b) Draw the phasor diagram for 3 phase induction motor during no load and full load test
c) A 3 phase star connected 400 V, 50 Hz, 4 pole induction motor has the following per phase constants in
ohms referred to stator. r1 = 0.15 x1 = 0.45 r2 = 0.12 x2 = 0.45 Xm = 28.5
Fixed losses (core, friction & windage losses) = 400 W. Compute stator current and rotor speed at slip of
0.04.

3. a) Explain why a single phase induction motor is not self-starting

b) Explain with a neat diagram of a capacitor start single phase induction machine

c) A 400 W, 230 V, 50 Hz capacitor start single phase induction motor has the following standstill constants
for the main and auxiliary winding
Main winding impedance Zm = 8 + j6.8 Ω
Auxiliary winding Za = 17 + j 6 Ω
Find the value of starting capacitance that will place the main and auxiliary winding currents in
quadrature at starting.

4. a) Explain the procedure for blocked rotor test (also called full load test) and no load test of a 3 phase
induction motor

b) A 6 pole, 50 Hz, 3 phase induction motor running on full load develops a useful torque of 160 Nm when
the rotor emf makes 120 complete cycles per minute. Calculate the shaft power output. If the mechanical
torque lost in friction and that for core loss is 10 Nm. Compute
(i) the copper-loss in the rotor windings
(ii) the input to the motor and
(iii) the efficiency
The total stator loss is given to be 800 W.
