Animal around us
 There are different types of animals in the world.

 Some animals are small, while some are big.

 Some animals live in forests and some live close to our homes.

Let us learn more about them.

I] Domestic animals

 Some animals are very useful to us. Such animals are called

Domestic animals.

 These animals are tamed and kept at our farms or home.

 We provide them good food and safe shelter.

 Domestic animals are useful to us in different ways.

Let us see some of their uses.

1) FOOD:
a) Animals like cows, buffaloes and goats give us milk.

b) Some birds like hens, ducks and geese give us eggs.

c) We get meat from animals like goat, chicken and fish.

Curd, paneer, cheese, butter are called milk products.

2) TRANSPORTATION:
a) Animals such as camels, yak, horse,

donkey and elephants carry people

and load on their back.

3) FIBRE:
a) We get wool from sheep and yak.

We use wool to make sweaters, mufflers and shawls.

b) We get silk from silkworms.

A silkworm spins long sticky thread around itself. It is

called cocoon. We make silk threads from these cocoons.

4) AGRICULTURE:

a) Bullock ploughs our fields and draws our

carts.

b) Earthworms make the soil soft and help plants to

grow.

5) HONEY AND WAX:

a) We get honey and wax from beehive.

b) Bee wax is used to make candles.

6) LEATHER:

a) Skin of dead animals is used to get leather.

We make leather from the skins of animals such as

buffaloes, snakes, crocodiles, camels etc.

We use leather to make belts,shoes,purses,jackets etc.

Wild animals:

 Some animals live in jungles. They are called wild animals.
 They live in natural shelters.
 E.g. lion, tiger, fox, deer, elephant, giraffe, jackal,
rhinoceros, owls, snakes.

Homes of animals:
 Animals need shelters.
 Animals need shelter to protect themselves from heat, cold,
rain and other animals.
 Different animals have different types of shelters.
 Some animal make homes to live in while some do not.

1) Caves and holes:
 Some wild animals live in
naturally formed shelters
such as caves, holes in tree or
holes in ground.
 Bats and bears live in caves if
they can find some.

 Lions and tigers live in dens.


Snakes live in holes in the ground
made by other animals or in
hollows of tree trunks.

2) Home builders:
 Few animals build their own homes.
 Most of birds build nest to lay eggs and protect their young
ones.
 Animal such as rabbit and mole dig holes in the ground and
live in them.

in beehive.

c) Ants make ant-hills.

3) Tree houses:
 Animals such as monkey and
leopard sleep on the tree for
safety.

4) Homeless animals:
 Many animals do not build any homes or shelters.
 Animals such as deer, elephants, rhinoceros, and giraffe
live under trees or hide in tall grass.

Endangered and extinct animals:

 Animals such as dinosaur that are no


longer found on the Earth are called
extinct animals.

 Animals such as tigers ,pandas, Indian


rhinoceros and snow leopards can be
found in very few numbers and may all
die soon are called endangered
animals.
