Dennis Collopy CV 2020

Personal Profile:
Dennis’ music industry career spans over 4 decades, including spells at
Chrysalis Music, RCA Records, Riva Music (signing the Clash, Rod
Stewart and John Mellencamp and spending 5 years running the USA
companies), BMG Music Publishing (making it one of the UK's top 5 music
publishers), EG Group(establishing an independent US office), a stint at Big Life
Music and finally establishing his own firm Menace Music in 1992.

Menace has since worked with a wide and diverse range of successful
artists and producers as well as representing many eminent USA and
UK songwriters. Since 2003 Menace Music has had a worldwide co-
venture agreement with Universal Music Publishing. Dennis has also
served on the board of a number of music industry bodies including the
PRS and the MPA.

His academic research interests cover international Intellectual property


rights (IPR) and contract law, cultural economics, management science
and research methodologies. His research focus includes the demand
as well as supply sides of the modern music value chain, emerging new
business models and increasing challenges to organisational structures
within the music and entertainment industries, global copyright law norms
and the international administration of music creators’ rights.

Since taking an MA at University of Westminster in 2003 he has taught


music management, music publishing and IP Law at the Academy of
Contemporary Music, Bucks New University, the University of Westminster
and the University of Hertfordshire (UH) where he is currently Senior
Research Fellow as well as senior lecturer on the Music Industry
Management programme.

As well as co-founding the Music and Entertainment Industries Research Group


(MEIRG) at UH, he was part of UH’s research team for the ‘Music Experience
and Behaviour in Young people’ consumer insight survey run between 2008
and 2011 and since 2013 has led a number of UK Intellectual Property Office (IPO)
commissioned studies on IPR infringement and also recently contributed to the 2019
“Music 2025” IPO funded study.

in 2011 he co-founded EMBRA (the European Music Business Research


Association) now known as IMBRA which has established a growing international
community of academic researchers in this field. He has co-edited the International
Journal of Music Business Research (IJMBR) first published in April 2012.

MD Menace Music Management
January 1992 – Present
Menace Management works with a diverse range of artists like Steve Edwards, Lisa
Millett, I Monster, The All Seeing I, Mojave 3 / ex-Slowdive members Neil Halstead
and Rachel Goswell as well as record producer/songwriters like Matt Aitken, Mark
van Hoen and Gary Benson.
Menace Music represented many successful US songwriters in the UK including
Maria Mckee, Skip Scarborough, Al McKay, Bryan Maclean and Doug Sahm as well
as a number of UK writers including Frankie Miller and Feargal Sharkey. In 2003
Menace Music entered into a worldwide co-venture with Universal Music Publishing
to which singer Steve Edwards and Mojave 3's leader Neil Halstead were signed.
MD Big Life Music
May 1991 – November 1991
A brief stint working with the late Jazz Summers and Tim Parry on acts including the
Orb and Lisa Stansfield, led to decision to establish own firm.
MD EG Music Group
May 1988 – May 1991
Joined in 1988 working with writers like Gary Benson, producer Youth, Killing Joke
and KLF's Jimmy Cautey and established an independent US presence for EG's
music interests in LA. Revamped the marketing of the EG label's back catalogue of
albums by Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry, King Crimson and Brian Eno, Acquired several
very successful US and European music publishing catalogues. EG sold their record
label and publishing companies to Virgin Records and BMG Music respectively in
1991
MD BMG Music Publishing Ltd
October 1985 – May 1988
Appointed MD of RCA- Ariola Music, worked with acts including Eurythmics. Sisters
of Mercy and signed Steve 'Silk 'Hurley, the Mission, All About Eve, Bruce Hornsby,
Lisa Stansfield, Steve Earle, David Grant, Imagination's Lee John and Ashley
Ingram, Maria McKee and Clannad. Established the renamed BMG Music Publishing
as one of the UK's top 5 music publishers
MD Riva Music Publishing Group
October 1977 – October 1985
Joined new publishing set up as General Manager signing The Clash, Rod Stewart,
John Mellencamp, Billy Nicholls and Air Supply. By1980 appointed MD - company
was ranked the # 2 publisher in 1982 in USA charts. By 1984 appointed Exec VP of
Riva's USA recording and music publishing companies alongside running the
companies’ worldwide business

Oversaw implementation of new copyright and royalties system and took on A&R
admin and business affairs responsibilities including budgets and options.

Hired to oversee European collection society copyright registrations the role entailed
reviewing all the CML contracts with writers including David Bowie, Santana, Frankie
Miller, Leo Sayer, Kenny Young, Curved Air, Renaissance, Climax Blues Band as
well as most acts on Chrysalis Records like Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, Steeleye
Span.
