Keith Calder studied environmental engineering and construction
economics and management. He joined Foster + Partners in 2011 as a Partner when the practice acquired the environmental design consultancy PHA Consult. As Operations Director of PHA Consult he worked alongside Foster + Partners playing a central role in the engineering design and management of many projects, including the Zénith auditorium in Saint-Étienne in France, the Willis Building in London and the Courtyard of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, in Washington DC. For each of these projects Keith took the role of lead mechanical designer as well as MEP team lead. He has designed engineering installations for a wide variety of schemes including commercial, retail, urban regeneration, public, mixed- use, data centres and critical systems as well as undertaking fit-out and refurbishment design. He has a deep interest in sustainable development, with a particular emphasis on the delivery of robust and realistic solutions for low and zero-carbon design. During the past four years of being with Foster + Partners, Keith has acted as environmental engineering partner for a variety of global projects, Zénith auditorium, Saint Etienne leading a multi-discipline team with specialist sub-consultants, including Keith was the lead mechanical the Ireocity mixed-use development in Delhi, Terminal 2 at Tocumen designer and MEP team leader for this auditorium in France International Airport in Panama, and latterly a series of significant retail outlets in the US, China and Europe. As part of his wide-ranging involvement with industry, Keith mentors C.Eng candidates for the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE). He is a member of the steering committee of CIBSE’s Energy Performance Group and a professional review interviewer for the IMechE.
