Sheet 1: Design of Compensated Amplifiers

1. Fig. 1 shows an active compensated voltage amplifier.

a. Find the amplifier ideal gain.
b. Derive an expression for the transfer function of the feedback
circuit TFB = V2/V1.
c. Derive the expression for Vo/Vi in terms of the op-amp open
loop gain A1 and TFB.
d. Use the expression of part (c) to find the transfer function for
the active compensated amplifier and hence find the condition
for phase compensation (Hint: assume A1 = A2 = t/s )
Find the values of the design parameters ‘b’ and ‘K’ to achieve a
phase compensated amplifier of DC gain = –3, then find the
phase and magnitude errors.

2. Fig. 2 represents a passive compensated amplifier, take A =

t/s, then:
a. Find the capacitor ratio C1/C2 required so that the circuit
operates as a 3-port voltage controlled voltage source (VCVS),
i.e., (Vo = K1 V1 - K2 V2), hence find the phase compensation
condition and the values of K1 and K2.
b. If t = 1 Mrad/s, design the circuit so that the non-inverting
DC gain = 5; (take R1= 10k). What is the inverting DC gain in
this case?
c. For the design obtained in part (b), find the compensated
phase error if the input signal radian
frequency = 10 krad/sec.
