We are Nataly Quintero Hernández and Laura Daniela Otálora Fajardo, we are last year students of

metallurgical engineering program and science materials at Universidad Industrial de Santander,

located in Colombia. Our main motive to write you is we are interested on undergo a research
internship in photovoltaic materials at University of Toronto under your leadership and through
The Emerging Leaders in the Americans Program ELAP. The primarily reason for us to consider
photovoltaic materials as a matter of investigation is their greater value of them in our present
and future as a society.

During our program, the ceramics and refractory course caused a big influence on us, we
developed a proposal of implantation a product able to create a footprint and for us,
environmental issues are the greatest affair concerning everyone, for instance photovoltaic glasses
were accomplishing our increasing need of developing a long-term sustainable world. We strongly
believe the high impact this would have in Colombia as is a country with constant levels of solar
light.

Looking into your curriculum we have noticed your enthusiastic research in materials, on website
of the Advanced Photovoltaics-Devices Group research group you belong to, we found a
compilation of your main focus of research of materials and devices as photonic crystals, which
when are integrated to solar cells give colour and improve their versatility; well as the plasmonic
effect where you can improve their efficiency in light absorption of solar cells.

Thanks to the internship we have done in the group of research investigación “Modificação e
Caracterização de Superfícies”, at Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brazil, we were
captivated by the influence of research on industry an society as the main incumbent.
