Extra heating supply

General
One way of extracting extra heat is to utilize the cooling
water system.

Example of extra heating supply: Heating of a crew cab

on a timber truck.

Refill of coolant
A new coolant, “Volvo Coolant VCS”, is introduced;
replacing existing coolant “Volvo Coolant” in new
generation engines.
D
This means that two different coolants will be available on
the aftermarket.

T2022556
CAUTION
The two coolant liquids must not be blended, therefore
a new yellow label (see illustration) is attached to all
expansion tanks using the new Volvo Coolant VCS.

Significant differences of the coolants:

• Volvo Coolant VCS – a yellowish liquid with slight
odour.
• Volvo Coolant – a greenish liquid with weak odour.

Note: Do not use Volvo anti-corrosion agent for engines

intended for Volvo Coolant VCS use only.

Extra heating with engine coolant

Engines D9A, D9B, D11A, D11B, D11C, D13A, D13B, D13C, D16C,
D16E, D16G
Heat is extracted at the thermostat housing (1) and
returned via the hose leading to the lower coolant pipe (2).
Replace the plug on the thermostat housing (1) with a
nipple and then connect a hose to the nipple using a quick
connector. The hose is then connected to the external
heater/cooler.
The hose from the external heater/cooler can be
connected to the return hose which leads to the lower
D
coolant pipe (2). Connection to the return hose is made
via a T-connector (the return hose will need to be cut in
two).

Note: Coolant can be extracted at a rate of up to 20 l/min

(see below). The sizes of the nipples is important in
limiting the flow.
