METHOD
is a teaching method which directly using target language (English)
and mother tongue is forbidden during the class
 HOW TO APPLY

Applying Direct Method by:

1. Using target language (English) only in the
class (no mother tongue at all)
2. Grammar is taught inductively
3. Focusing on speaking and listening
4. Teaching useful ‘daily’ language only
5. Using pictures and objects to teach
concrete vocabulary, while for abstract
vocab, teach by associating ideas

WEAKNESSES
• An expensive method as teacher has to use
some aids for teaching
• Incompetent teachers can't use this method

• It is difficult to explain things without mother
tongue
• Can’t be implemented in public school/big
classes because it will be difficult for teacher
to pay individual attention
 IS IT APPLICABLE
FOR 21ST CENTURY?
No, this method is not recommended to be applied
because not every country has native speakers or
if they do, not every school can afford to pay for
that, especially public school. This method
requires a big sum of funds as it needs a lot of
material facilities to teach
Moreover, since the mother tongue is forbidden, it
will be very difficult to explain some vocabulary.
