TRAVIS JOHNSON CHEMISTRY Ms.

Bartley

PRACTICAL NO: 1

DATE: September 27, 2019

TITLE: ACID/BASE TITRATION

AIM: To quantify and compare the acetic acid content of different brands of
vinegar

APPARATUS /MATERIALS: 250ml volumetric flask, 10ml pipette, 25ml pipette,

pipette filler, conical flask, beaker, wash bottle, burette, clamp and stand, dropper,
white tile, 0.1M NaOH solution, brand of vinegar, phenolphthalein

METHOD:

1. 50ml of Jampak vinegar was poured into a beaker.

2. A 10ml pipette was washed and conditioned with Jampak vinegar and the
pipette was used to place 10ml of Jampak vinegar into a 250ml volumetric flask.

3. The volumetric flask was filled to the mark with distilled water, with
intermittent shaking.

4. 100ml of the diluted vinegar solution was poured into a clean, labelled beaker.

5. A 25ml pipette was filled with the diluted vinegar then 25ml aliquot was pipette
into a clean 250ml conical flask

6. 2 drops of phenolphthalein indicator was added.

7. The burette was washed and conditioned with standardized NaOH solution then
filled to an appropriate mark, close to zero. The teat was filled and there were no
air bubbles.

8. The sodium hydroxide solution was titrated against the diluted vinegar solution
until a permanent colour change occurred.

9. The titration was repeated more accurately until concordant values were within
0.10ml of each other.

10. The results were then tabulated.

CALCULATIONS:

1. Average volume of NaOH used

Average volume= (5.6ml + 5.7ml)/2

Average volume= 5.65ml

2. Amount of moles of NaOH reacted

Number of molecules= molar concentration X volume

Number of molecules=0.1 M X (5.65X10-3dm3)

Number of molecules=5.65X10-4mol

3. Equation

NaOH(aq) + CH3COOH→CH3COONa(aq) +H2O(l)

4. Mole ratio

NaOH: CH3COOH

1 : 1

This ratio is one (1) to one (1).

5. Amount of moles of acetic acid reacted

Number of molecules= 5.65X10-4mol X 25ml

Number of molecules=0.14125 mol

6. Molar concentration of diluted vinegar

Molar concentration =number of molecules/volume

Molar concentration = 5.65X10-4mol / 0.025 dm3

Molar concentration =0.0226mol dm-3

7. Molar concentration of original vinegar

Dilution factor=volume of solution/volume of vinegar

Dilution factor=250ml/10ml

Dilution factor=25

Conc. of original vinegar=Dilution factor X molar concentration of diluted

vinegar

Molar concentration of original vinegar=25 X 0.0226 mol dm -3

Molar concentration of original vinegar=0.565M

8. Comparison of acid content of different brands of vinegar

The concentration of the vinegar for Jampak was 0.565M, EVE was
0.635M, Cals was 0.513, Grace was 0.55M and Hilo was 0.50.Therefore
the vinegar with the lowest acid content, then the Cals brand. After which
was the Jampak brand and the brand with the most acid content was EVE.
The acid content was garnered by carrying out a titration .The vinegar
was analyzed to determine the concentration of acetic acid in it by slowly
adding a base to the vinegar and water mixture and recording when it
reached its equivalence point. The Hilo brand was the only brand that had
the actual acidity on the label as the experiment deemed that there was

actually 5% acidity in the vinegar. While the Eve was the furthest off
from the actual acidity on the label of the bottle (5%).

Sources of Error/Precautions:

1. Ensure that the beaker is read at eye level.

2. Ensure that the burette and pipette are washed and conditioned before use.

CONCLUSION:

The experiment proved that the Eve vinegar had the highest acid content out of the
brands chosen. Also the Hilo brand was the only brand that had the actual
acidity on the label as the experiment deemed that there was actually 5% acidity
in the vinegar
