INTRODUCTION

The type and area of the tail surface are important in

determining the stability of the aeroplane. Some of the
important parameters that decide the aerodynamic
characteristics of the tail are area ratio
(St / S), Tail volume ratio (VH/ VV), tail arm, tail span etc
TYPES OF AIRCRAFT TAIL
TAIL SELECTION
PARAMETER HORIZONTAL TAIL VERTICAL TAIL
Area(st/s) 0.31 0.21

Aspect ratio 5 1.7

Taper ratio 0.26 0.31

TAIL AREA
The area of the horizontal and vertical tail (SH and SV) are
calculated as follows by using raymerfromula SH=area ratio x
34.3 and Sv= area ratio x 34.3
SH=0.31 x 34.3

SH=10.63𝑚2

SV=0.21 x 34.3

SV=7.2 𝑚2
TAIL SPAN
The span of the horizontal and vertical tail (bh and bv)
are given as;

bh=(AhSh)^0.5
bv=(AvSv)^ 0.5
Taking Ah=5 and Av=1.7 we get;
bh =7.29m
bv =3.5m
