1. Happy Mind is a small café with small food menu. Happy Mind has been very successful, but
its owners, Kim and Kian, feel pressure from their customers to be more technologically
advanced. Kim and Kian also feel a tremendous responsibility (legal and societal pressure) to
manage underage consumption of alcohol.

1.1 Provide three examples for each of (a) the data that Happy Mind would gather from its
transactions (e.g. from transactions such food orders) and (b) the information that
Happy Mind would produce from these data. (Note: You are required to provide three
examples of data and three examples of information). (3 marks)
1.2 Explain how the produced information can help Kim and Kian manage their inventory.

1.3 Explain three ways that information technology can help Happy Mind to comply with
legal requirements and social responsibilities surrounding the sale of alcohol. (3 marks)

4. Sofila is a hotel with 15 branches around Australia. Sofila’s managers’ vision is to provide the
best customer service and maintain and motivate loyal customers. Describe two ways that
information systems can support Sofila’s managers to meet their vision. (2 marks)

5. BNV is an Asian automobile manufacturer that sells automobiles throughout Asia and
Australia. BNV has a major manufacturing facility in Asia where it produces most of their
cars. Currently, BNV has disjointed information systems that cause communication and
tracking problems. Managers experience problems when trying to obtain information to guide
strategic decisions. They find that queries for aggregated data take too long. The current
systems only allow BNV to interact with suppliers and customers via fax (i.e. they fax their
orders to the suppliers).

Suggest an information system that can address BNV's problems and describe two benefits
that BNV can achieve from implementing the suggested information system. (3 marks)

6. Provide two examples of the potential benefits of big data analytics in higher education. (2
marks)
