TOPIC PROPOSAL

Date: 10/11/19

Through my ISM journey this year, I aspire to cultivate a deeper understanding of the
field of cardiology and gain perspective on diagnostic approaches, the advancement of
cardio-thoracic procedures, and patient interactions.
My first-hand interactions with the struggles of the impoverished throughout my
childhood in Newark and my visits to India had enthralled me about the journey of human life.
This enlightenment had occurred to me when I picked up a ten rupee note that a homeless man
had dropped at a busy market intersection in India. As I tapped him on the shoulder, he delivered
a look through his sulken eyes that I will never forget. There was an unparalleled sense of purity
and strength in those eyes. To me, they were a manifestation of the anguish and grit that
constitute a man’s journey. From that day on, I knew that I wanted to be a part of this powerful
journey. However, I didn’t quite understand what role I played or who I truly was as a person. As
I began to cultivate an identity, I fostered a profound ambition to practice medicine in
underdeveloped countries and diffuse the power of humanity. In an endeavor to explore these
passions, I observed an intensive coronary care unit in Hyderabad, India. I feel that my
experiences in the ICCU were defined by my fascination towards the beautiful soul of each
patient in spite of the agony they faced. It’s that perseverance that defines the boundary between
life and death. In that sense, I felt invigorated with purpose and fostered a calling in life.
Being an ENFJ-A, I feel that my genuine nature aligns with my vision for my patient
interactions. I aspire to inspire altruism in my patient connections and convey my raw
authenticity towards their care. I find satisfaction in the happiness of others and that’s why I have
deep respect for taking a vested interest in a patient. In that sense, I feel that I can approach my
care with an appropriate infusion of energy and emotion. Simply put, I want to treat my patients
like family and foster a connection with them. I view cardiology as an avenue for becoming a
chapter in the life of a fellow human being. On that account, I have always possessed the ability
to be a motivator for others and convey my passion in a transparent manner. I feel that these
personality traits align with my ambition to become an advocate and endeavor to bridge the
disconnect of our healthcare system. This translates into my passion for public speaking and
unveiling the leadership voice within me. In that sense, I view cardiology as a vehicle to the
diffusion of my love and selflessness, while also growing as a leader and advocating my views.
