COOLING SYSTEM
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. INSPECT COOLING SYSTEM FOR LEAK
(a) Remove the radiator cap.
NOTICE:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not
remove the radiator cap while the engine and
A143086 radiator are still hot. Thermal expansion will
cause hot engine coolant and steam to blow out
from the radiator.
(b) Fill the radiator with coolant and attach a radiator
cap tester.
(c) Warm up the engine.
(d) Pump it to 118 kPa (1.2 kgf/cm2, 17.1 psi), then
check that the pressure does not drop. If the
pressure drops, check the hoses, radiator and water
pump for leakage. If there are no signs of external
coolant leakage, check the heater core, cylinder
block and head. CO
(e) Reinstall the radiator cap.
2. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL OF RESERVOIR
(a) The engine coolant should be between the LOW
and FULL lines when the engine is cold. If low,
check for leakage and add Toyota Super Long Life
Coolant or similar high quality ethylene glycol based
non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and non-borate
coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology
up to the FULL line.
3. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT QUALITY
(a) Remove the radiator cap.
CAUTION:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not
remove the radiator cap while the engine and
radiator are still hot. Thermal expansion will
cause hot engine coolant and steam to blow out
from the radiator.
(b) Check for any excessive deposits of rust or scale
around the radiator cap and radiator filler hole; the
coolant should be free of oil. If excessively dirty,
replace the coolant.
(c) Reinstall the radiator cap.

ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. CHECK RADIATOR FAN OPERATION AT LOW
TEMPERATURE (Below 83°C (181°F))
(a) Check that the radiator fan does not rotate when the
ignition switch is turned to ON with the A/C switch
OFF.
(b) Disconnect the engine coolant temperature sensor
connector, then turn the ignition switch to ON.
Check that the radiator fan rotates.
NOTICE:
It is noted that the fan might turn after IG ON
then the engine water temperature is high or A/C
switch is ON.
2. CHECK RADIATOR FAN OPERATION AT HIGH
TEMPERATURE (Above 97.6°C (208°F))
(a) After the engine is warmed up, check that the A/C
switch is OFF.
(b) Check that the radiator fan starts rotating when the
coolant temperature is higher than 97.6°C (208°F)
CO and that it stops rotating when the coolant
temperature is lower than 95.5°C (204°F).
NOTICE:
The coolant temperature is sensed by the
engine coolant temperature sensor on the water
outlet (engine outlet) of the cylinder head.
3. INSPECT RADIATOR FAN MOTOR ASSEMBLY
(a) Disconnect the radiator fan motor connector.
(b) Check that the radiator fan rotates smoothly when
A the battery is connected to the fan motor connector.
(c) Using an ammeter, measure the current with step
(b) maintained.
Standard current:
5.2 to 8.2 A
(d) Connect the radiator fan motor connector.

REPLACEMENT
1. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER (See page EM-63)
2. DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
CAUTION:
To avoid the danger of being burned, do not remove
the radiator cap sub-assembly while the engine and
radiator assembly are still hot. Thermal expansion
will cause hot engine coolant and steam to blow out
from the radiator assembly.
(a) Loosen the radiator drain cock plug sub-assembly.
(b) Remove the radiator cap sub-assembly.
(c) Loosen the drain cock plug, then drain the coolant.

(h) Stop the engine, then wait until the coolant cools
down. Remove the radiator cap and check the
coolant level.
(i) If the coolant level goes down, repeat steps (b)
through (h).
(j) When the coolant level stops going down, adjust the
amount of the coolant in the radiator reservoir tank.
