Prompts These are spaces for the student to write additional comments, extra information about the things they are learning, special thoughts, or a place to draw something fun while they decorate and personalize their pages. Language Journey In this first part and focuses more on language acquisition than content. Every week students embark on a weekly cycle to practice all four language skills. These four language skills are embedded within a Key Question which guides student production. At the end of each cycle, students answer a specific question related to the Key Question. During each class, students focus on the information they are receiving so, later on, they can, focus on their own production. Knowledge Highway Knowledge Highway offers curricular content. We guide students to discover new things about Art, Science, Math, and Social Studies (Geography, History, and Citizenship). At the end of each week there is an assessment called Test Yourself, with a section relevant to the curricular subject. We have designed a section, Consolidation, which integrates everything they have learned during the week. Students will also think about how they are learning: they will receive peer and teacher evaluations after their own personal self-assessment. Opener This is where we find the key question that is the link to UNOiʼs SE within the same Integration Theme and which is intrinsically related to the readings in the Awesome Reader. Children can learn in many different ways. In line with UNOiʼs strong belief that children need new opportunities to do so, our program has a Learning Framework that uses different methodologies and techniques such as constructive interaction, challenge-based learning, case studies, and projects, among others, so that students can work on different ways to answer the Key Question. Journey Outline The first pages of the Language Journey include an introduction and a background build-up so that students can relate to the Key Question. The journey is then explained in weekly steps with weekly simpler questions which, in turn, will help answer the Key Question. Step by step Here we focus on explaining the methodologies and techniques students will use to answer the Key Question in a fun-filled and meaningful way. These Learning Frameworks will vary from unit to unit and from grade to grade depending on the needs and the topics in both our SE and BE. Key Words Students learn new vocabulary when it is useful for communication, when it helps them to discuss their own ideas, and when it helps them discover and learn new contents. There are: Communicative Key Words Academic Key Words Content Key Words Language acquisition sections: Witty Reading This section is directly related to our new anthology: Awesome Reader, which is a year-long anthology with readings linked to the Language Journey. This section focuses on developing strategic reading skills more than simple reading comprehension skills which could be addressed in conversations and simple exercises. Skills such as predicting, using context to fi nd meaning, sorting ideas, and others, will build up studentsʼ critical thinking skills when faced with written input. Students will also link the readings to their own personal experiences and lifestyle. Language acquisition sections: Quick Language In this section, students discover language structures and functions. Texts or tracks provide the oral or written context linked to the weekʼs question. Students then identify the language structures and functions in context, read about them and practice using them. Students are asked to produce samples or to use these structures and functions orally or in writing. Language acquisition sections: Clever Writing In this section, students find different samples of writing genres, processes, and traits. These samples and their explanations give students the necessary context and examples so that they can use specific traits, processes or genres of writing as they need them. Students will gradually learn how to produce their own writing samples. Then, they will move on to more complex compositions thanks to these helpful guidelines. Language acquisition sections: Sharp Speaking This section focuses on students really using their speaking skills. First, students listen to a track which provides the context, helps their pronunciation, and broadens their vocabulary. Then they practice their conversation skills by interacting with their classmates in fun-filled and dynamic ways. Afterwards, they can record their interactions in different ways to provide some evidence of their learning and to help them remember the language skills they were practicing. Test Yourself This weekly assessment has standardized testing formats (Cambridge-like) with items taken from the language skills and the content that students have learnt throughout the week. These assessments will not only be a helpful practice for the unit exam, but they will be especially useful for students when they take their certifi ed examinations. Students will be very familiar with the format, types of questions, and ways to answer the items. They will also feel confident about their language skills in any situation. Consolidation This section integrates the language introduced and practiced throughout the weeks in the Language Journey. It will be shared in class and it will help solving the Key Question. Students will be given the opportunity of assessing their own learning. They will receive peer and teacher evaluations after completing their own self-assessment. Smart Mathematician This section reviews math concepts students have been introduced to in the SE learning log. It focuses on subject-specific vocabulary to develop subject literacy. Students will use their second language to communicate processes and solutions to math problems they are already familiar with. Thinking and building concepts in English will open a whole new world to children: the overwhelming world of online math content available in English. Curious Scientist This section expands studentsʼ knowledge of science at both the lexical and content levels. Students use graphic organizers to explore and analyze topics in English using critical thinking skills. The topics are linked to SE learning log. Here is an opportunity to explore their world and how it works. Appealing readings build up background knowledge and help students think about nature in a more respectful way. Wise Citizen This section addresses the content areas of Geography, History, and Humanities. It is exciting for our students to learn about these subjects as it gives them the opportunity to have a multicultural section and to learn more about what is happening in the world. In the upper grades, they will also examine the background behind some of the current decision making processes in other countries. Creative Artist This section focuses on exploring and appreciating different artistic expressions as developed by humankind throughout the ages and cultures. The importance of this section is that students will unleash their creativity and make hands-on projects. Students will focus on two topics: visual and plastic arts, and drama and body language. They will improve their language skills while they develop art appreciation, express themselves and learn about the context of important art movements. The topics of this subject come from the SEP curriculum. Personal and Global Skills Throughout the Learning Log you will find two types of spaces: Personal and Global Skills. On the first ones, students perform activities that will help them grow internally, on the second ones, students reflect on problems that affect our world.
