the tone or mood of the scene they are being played in

• Anempathetic Sounds: These are sound effects or music that do

not match the tone or mood of the scene they are being played in

Origin of Sound Effects

• The term Sound effect, comes from the early days

when radio was on its prime.
• Sound effects on films were originally Foley sound
effects and originated in live studio broadcasts in the
1920s.
• Jack Donovan Foley and his crew started to make
sound effects on movies while the movie was being
filmed. They needed to have perfect timing because
any minor mistakes or starting late or early would
make the scenes filmed useless
• While Foley is still used today now we have a greater
variety of sound effects, tools to make them and
tools to edit them into the movie.
What are Sound Effects?

• A sound effect is a sound made in

advance for producers or podcasters
(amongst others). They can be easily
incorporated into projects or modified
with editing software’s. Some sound
effects are free but others you have to
pay for or have custom made, of course
depending on what you want and its
quality price will vary
Where can we see Sound
Effects?

• Sound Effects can be more commonly seen in

things such as podcasts or movies. They are
used to make actions like punches of firing a
gun feel real or to give off a mood for a
certain scene or event.

Design Sound Effects

• These are effects that are created or

custom made as they don’t currently
exist
• They are usually created by using a
range of programs on a computer o
manipulating the waveform of an
existing sound

Ambience Sound Effects

• These are effects that give the feeling or

sense of the scene or environment. For
example the sound of cars beeping and
screaming in traffic or plates and silverware
hitting each other in a busy resataurant.

Electronic Sound Effects

• These are effects that are

generated by devices such as a
synthesizers and different types of
plug ins that create sounds of
electronic nature
• Other effects can also be processed
and made to be sound electronic

Hard Sound Effects

• These are effects that are explicitly

seen and heard in screen
• They begin and end at a specific point
in time
• They are produced by the in set prop or
a selected SFX from an SFX library and
added while editing

What is Foley?

• Foley are sound effects created in a

Foley studio using anything that
may simulate the sound effect that
one is trying to produce
• The sound effect is performed by a
contraption or a person with
different objects
• If needed it can be produced
outside a studio

When is Foley used?

• There are various situations where foley is used.

• Sometimes in movies sounds that are recorded in set might be
obstructed by offset sounds like cars or airplanes so after
production a foley sound effect is recorded by a foley artist and
edited into the movie
• It can also be used when scenes such as a fist fight are carried out
as there are no actual punches just stunt doubles faking it, so
foley sound effects of punches would be created and edit in
