Introduction

According to the United Nations World Commission on Environment and

Development, sustainability is the ability to meet the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This UN's
definition is not universally accepted but it is pretty standard and has been expanded
over the years to include perspectives on human needs and well-being including non-
economic variables, such as education and health, clean air and water, and the
protection of natural beauty. It is clear that the potential of our long-term viability of well-
being on this planet has to do with our maintenance of the natural world and its natural
resources.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has also
provided a definition of sustainability – it is the capacity to improve the quality of human
life while living within the carrying capacity of the Earth’s supporting eco-systems. They
focused on the fact that global production and consumption patterns are destroying
nature at persistent and dangerously high rates.
Governments, industry, non-profits, and environmental agencies all have
different definitions of environmental sustainability and approaches to the issue.
However, one thing is for sure, all the existing and operating companies in the country
should adhere in the different environmental laws that are mandated in the Philippines.
One of the leading companies in the country is the Nestlé Philippines, Inc. which

requires that their products are made in a caring and responsible way that preserves the
environment for future generations. Inspired by the scientific breakthrough of the
founder, Henri Nestlé, guided by their values and with nutrition at their core, Nestle work
alongside partners to enhance quality of life and contribute to a healthier future. They
have defined three overarching ambitions which will guide their work towards achieving
their 2020 commitments and supporting the achievement of the UN Sustainable
Development Goals. These ambitions are as follows:
 help 50 million children live healthier lives,
 help to improve 30 million livelihoods in communities directly connected to their
business activities and
 strive for zero environmental impact in their operations.
Nestle ensures that the principle of sustainable development is embedded in their
activities, brands and products. This means protecting the future by making the right
choices in an environment where water is increasingly scarce, natural resources are
constrained and biodiversity is declining. Nestlé is therefore committed to:

• full compliance with all applicable legal environmental requirements and our
internal requirements where specific environmental legislation is non-existent
or insufficient;
• the continual improvement of the environmental performance of our activities,
products and services and prevention of pollution through the Nestlé Environmental
Management System (NEMS) which complies with the international ISO 14001
standard;
• the systematic assessment and optimization of environmental impacts in the
design of new and renovated products;
• the responsible sourcing of ingredients, packaging materials and other goods
and services from suppliers who comply with the Nestlé Supplier Code and demonstrate
continual improvement of their environmental performance; so that Nestlé’s products
will be not only tastier and healthier but also better for the environment.
