The peace settlements and the League of Nations failed in their basic aims to keep
the world in peace. The evidence was clearly seen when twenty years after the
signing of the Treaty of Versailles, Europe was at war again. Germany began go
against the major European powers and strengthened its position by signing
treaties with Italy and Japan. Germany led by a capable and strong leader named

By 1940, after signing a Treaty of Friendship with Germany and Italy, Japan was
full of confidence to conquer the Asian nations. The opportunity came when the war
in Europe broke out. Japan knew that while busy fighting in Europe, the British and
the French were not in position to defend their territories in Southeast Asia. Only
the United States stood in the way of Japan’s expansionist policy.
