Launching the ‘Glimpses of Europe’ Mosaic Artworks in four cities

To celebrate Europe Day during the month of May over 160 students, aged 7 – 12, from Amman, Jerash,
Irbid and Kerak learned about the landscape, culture and history of Europe through creative learning
sessions.

In partnership with the Princess Basma Youth Resource Centre (PBYRC), Jordanian artist Hazem
Nimrawi guided the students to capture their understanding and impressions of Europe on clay tiles. The
tiles were fired and glazed and the colourful results have been collated into large-scale outdoor mosaic
artworks and permanently installed at the PBYRC centres in each city.

The Head of the European Union Delegation to Jordan, Ambassador Andrea Matteo Fontana said:
“Combining educational activities with creativity is the best way to ensure that young people develop a
love of learning, and in this case the results of that creativity will be permanently displayed in Irbid, Kerak,
Jerash and Amman for all the public to enjoy and be proud of.”

Members of the public are invited to join the events to formally launch these artworks at the Princess
Basma Centres in each city:
6 July, Irbid, 12pm
12 July, Amman, 12pm
13 July, Jerash, 12pm
16 July, Kerak, 12pm

To ensure the sustainability of these actions beyond the lifetime of the project, the European Union has
provided training for the facilitators of the Princess Basma Youth Resource Centres so they can manage
similar events in the future.

This project forms part of a broader programme of cultural events and activities in Jordan which is funded
by the European Union and implemented by the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) in Jordan
whose members are: the British Council, the Austrian Embassy, Instituto Cervantes, Institut Français,
Goethe-Institut, Embassy of Greece, Embassy of Romania and the Società Dante Alighieri. END
