INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Teenagers today are having a hard time on knowing themselves more which leads them

to engage their selves to organizations like fraternities that made them feel belong. Fontanilla, M.

(2011) defined Fraternity as a group of people united in a relationship, having some common

interests, activity, and purpose. Each member of the fraternity helps each other in building

confidence and character and in ensuring safety and security of every member. Fraternity also

allows one to meet new people, share interests and acceptance of others’ as well.

Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) is one of the legal fraternities in Sogod, Southern Leyte.

It was established in 1968. At present, there are 300 official and active members in the entire

municipality of Sogod. Thus, majority of the members in Sogod are teenagers.

It was the aim of the study to determine the reasons of teenagers in joining Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP).

The purpose on pursuing the study is to give a better understanding about fraternities so

that the researcher will be able to give good information about this study. The researcher would

be also want to find the cause and effects on why teenagers join this organization so that

researcher will be able to evaluate the factor that leads them to join in the fraternities and lastly

to be able to find main reason why they wanted to join. Finding this reason will be able to give

better understanding to the community especially those parents that their children are member of

the fraternity.

1
Objective of the Study

This study aims to understand the reasons of the teenagers who joined Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP) with or without permissions from their parents.

Significance of the Study

This study is beneficial to Teenagers, Parents, Teachers, and Barangay Captain.

Teenagers would be able to help them on their problems in a small way. They must give good

influence and befriend with them so that they would be able to feel the sense of belongingness.

Teachers most especially the guidance councilor, this study would let them see the fact why they

join BETA SIGMA OMEGA PHI (BSOP) and because of that, they need to guide them and give

adviser so that they would able to avoid wrong conclusion. Parents, they would be able to

become more aware of the situation of their children. They would motivate them to give full

attention and love to their children more than themselves and most of all; they need to guide

them so that their children won’t join in this kind of organization. Barangay Captain would be able

to secure the places properly to prevent street fights. In case if one of their Barangay Tanod captured one

or two or more member of the fraternity, they would have to talk with them so that they would able to

understand why they they’re capture also and, they would have to talk to their parents. That way, parents

would able to guide their children like that it was stated in the order significance.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is concentrated only on the reasons of teenagers in joining Beta Sigma Omega

Phi (BSOP) with or without permissions of their parents. The participants of this study are the

teenager students in Sogod National High School who joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

FRATERNITY

According to Melvin R. Fontanilla’s “Fraternities in the Philippines” (2011) A fraternity

is defined as a group of people united in a relationship, having some common interests, activity,

and purpose. It is a brotherhood, as the members usually say, of people at a college or university

usually characterizes by Greek letters. For members, fraternity means brotherhood, unity,

friendship, trust, and acceptance. It means meeting new people, sharing interests and accepting

others’ as well. It helps in building confidence and character because they believe that a

fraternity gives a certain kind of protection. It gives the feeling of security and importance. It is

somewhat comparable to gangs as they are both organizations of people. However, gangs usually

lack purpose and acceptance to communities. Usually linked with violence, members tend to

compete with each other. Unlike in fraternity, members have this humility to help each other out

and protect each other from an outsider.

HAZING

According to Rafael Jod Tomeldan (2013), in joining a fraternity, one must undergo the

initiation rites better known as hazing. Some dismiss hazing as a parochial issue, to be dealt with

only by the universities and academics involve. But in his article “hazing should concern as all”,

Juan Alven Tiamson submits that it should concern as all. He wrote that by now, hazing

particularly the violent kind has invaded most of our institutions. It is now prevalent in schools

even in police and military academics. Hazing, as we all know, systematically develops a culture

of violence among the youth. Most importantly, the bonds developed by hazing become seeds of

3
corruption. Hazing is hazing whether it results in death, mutilation or years of pain or whether it

is done inside or outside the school or institution.

In the article “fraternal fury” is written by Argee Guevara, he stated that there is

something intriguing and frightening about the culture of college fraternity. The more we try to

understand it, the more we end up abhorring it. As a result of two rival fraternities rumble, one

was reported by TV Patrol to have been severely injured after getting a pretty nasty whack on the

head when rival frat men pounce on him with lead pipes, clubs and baseball bats. The cause of

rumble is un-important since rumbles crupts for a variety of reason, none of which is intimately

related to the pursuit of academic excellence, the repudiation of our foreign debt or the liberation

of our impoverished people. This is what makes their way of life difficult to comprehend. It is

said that these frat wars are part and parcel of their reality. But the sense of belonging and

security is non-existent when they are perennially gripped by paranoia every time a rumble

occurs.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

According to William Hageman (2013), Here are some pros and cons in joining a college

fraternity or sorority

Pros

Networking: One of the traditional selling points for Greek life is the connections one can

make, not just with current chapter members in the business world. A fraternity is not a four-year

college experience, like a school club; it’s a lifetime involvement.

“I have seen the benefits of that for some students who look to the fraternity or sorority

upon graduation when they’re looking for a job.” Said Katherine Cohen, the CEO and founder of

4
Ivy Wise, an educational consulting company that helps students gain admission to everything

from pre-kindergarten to graduate school.

Of course, in 2013 there are myriad other ways to build your network. Cohen also

pointed out that a university offers many other opportunities to meet people in small group

setting, “whether it’s joining the newspaper or a dance company or an a cappella group. If (a

students has) other interest, I encourage you to look at all the opportunities to find students on

campus with common interest.”

Housing: Fraternity housing is generally less expensive than living in a residence hall. “If

you check out most website of Greek affairs officer on college campuses, they’re very

straightforward on pricing and financial expectations.” Bosco said. And the fraternity or sorority

house experience also exposes a student a real-life situation the house must be maintained, bills

paid, a cook hired, etc.

Cohen said the cost depends on the fraternity or sorority and the year the student is in.

She said sharing an off-campus apartment may be cheaper than living in a dorm. And living in a

fraternity can be more cost effective- but you must do the homework. “Speak to someone in the

frat. What is the real cost? Have them lay them out. Find out if they’ll be saving or not.”

Charitable work: Though various fundraisers, fraternities and sororities raise money for

national and local charities, as well as individual causes. (Earlier this year, members of Phi

Alpha Tau at Emerson College in Boston raised more than $20,000 to help pay for a

transgendered chapter member’s female-to-male surgery.) According to the North American

Interfraternity Conference, a trade association for 75 international and national men’s

5
fraternities, the groups raised $21.1 million for charity in the 2011-2012 school year

(nicindy.org/press).

Better number: Bosco said that students belonging to fraternities and sororities generally

have higher grade-point averages than the rest of the student body (though other factors may be a

factor). They also have a higher freshman and sophomore retention rates and more service hours,

Bosco noted.

Cons

Financial, time commitments: Both can be substantial. Cohen pointed out the Greek life

involves many social engagements that need to be balanced with the class workload. Then

there’s the financial commitment. “There are dues, functions, events,” she said. “We’ve seen a

lot of hidden costs families might not have thought of before the rush process.”

Just as if you were buying a car, get all the costs spelled out for you. Peter Smithhisler,

CEO of the North- America interfraternity conference, said not to be satisfied with a group’s

ballpark number. Get a specific dollar amount. “Costs for chapter dues, costs for insurance, if

there’s a housing component. The fraternity and sorority should be upfront. Don’t be afraid to

ask, “What should I get for this money?” And if they can’t or won’t answer, look elsewhere.”

Definition of Terms

Teenagers- it is where stage of adolescence started to tease somebody, and it also

includes physical harassment.

Hazing- unnecessary or excessive work in order to harass an attempt to embassy or

disconcert by ridicule or persistent.

6
Fraternity- a group of people who have the same job, interest, or etc. and the feelings of

friendship that exists between people in a group.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study used case study type of research. Through case study the researcher were able

to present results by stating the concern of the discussion and show the exact statements of the

respondent about their reasons of teenagers in joining Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP).

Research Locale

The study was conducted at Sogod national High School located at Zone 1, Sogod,

Southern Leyte. Sogod National high School is one of the integrated secondary schools in the

division of Southern Leyte that offers junior and senior high school. It is the only mega school in

the whole province of Southern Leyte.

Research Respondents

The respondents of this study were ten (10) selected teenagers who joined Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP).

Research Sampling Technique

The researchers utilized the convenience sampling technique in choosing and selecting

the participants of the study. The researcher selected ten (10) student teenagers join Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP).

7
Research Instrument

This study used researcher- made questionnaire to gather the desired data for this study.

The questionnaire composed of three (3) questions that dealt on the reasons of teenagers in

joining Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP). The researchers hired three (3) experts to check and

validate the content of the questionnaire made by the researchers.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering data, the researchers followed several steps.

The researcher sent a letter of consent to the School Principal, to ask permission to

conduct this study. After the School Principal approved the letter of consent, the researchers

conducted the study. The researcher asked the permission from the respondent to conduct their

study. The researchers showed their gratitude and appreciation towards the respondents. The

researcher collected the data through recording. The recorded data were transcribed, interpreted,

and analyzed after the collection.

Data Analysis Procedure

The study used framework analysis in order to analyze the data into something

meaningful and readable. These are followed several steps, first the researchers transcribed the

data collected or gathered by the audio recorded answer of the participants. Second, the

researchers read and understand the data gathered and then the researchers analyze the data in

8
order to come up the theme. Then the researchers applied coding to identify the correct and

peaceful data.

Chapter IV

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter presents the results, analysis, and discussion of the data gathered in the

study. This includes the reasons of teenagers in joining Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) in the

Sogod, Southern Leyte.

The results revealed that the Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) is a helpful fraternity to the

community and society. Teenagers joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) for they wanted to

support and help other people through Beta Sigma Omega Phi’s community services like coastal

clean-up and feeding programs. Some teenagers joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) because

of curiosity. They want to know what is Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) is about. Other

participants cited that they joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) to gain experiences in joining

fraternity. It is the evident in the participants’ responses:

“Ag ahong rason sap ag-apil aning Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) is para
maka tabang sa mga tao og para maka amigo og mas daghang mga tao nga
gusto pod nga motabang sa atong kaugmaon pareha anang eh push ta nila
nga dili mounding og skoyla, magtinarong ja di mag binuang.” (P3, SS3)

“Ag ahong rason sap ag-apil aning Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) kay
naagni ko sa ilang pamamalakad sa kumunidad ka motabang sa mgfa
barangay pariah anang mag Clean- up, servicing ja mag pa kuan pod mag
pa feeding program.” (P5, SS5)

9
“Ag ahong rason nganong ning apil ko sa Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP
tungod kay gusto maka himangno nga unsa nang fraternitiha.” (P7, SS7)

According to Syrett (2009), Whatever the reason a student joins a fraternity, the

experience a student has as a member can shape their college and post-college

experiences.

Moreover, teenagers joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) because they were

encouraged and influenced by their friends, classmates, and even their father. The

participant said:

“Ang naka influwensya naho sa pagsod aning Beta Sigma Omega Phi
(BSOP) kay ag ahong barkada og ahong amahan. Nindot man kuno ang
pamamalakad sa aning fraternitiha maong kani ang ahong gi sudlan”. (P5,
SS 15)

According to Valdez (2007), many female adolescents are attracted to gangs

because their friends or boyfriends have joined. One book looked at girls in San

Antonio, TX, who hung out with male gang members.

Majority of the participants do not ask permission from their parents to join Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP) because they are afraid to be scolded and battered by their parents. They are

also afraid if their parents will stop them sending to school. The participants responses are

evident in the following transcriptions:

“Wala ko mananghid sa akong ginikanan tungod kay mahadlok ko sa ako

ang ginikanan og basin ila kong paundangon og paeskoyla og basin ila kung
kulatahon.” (P6, SS26)

“Wala ko nananghid sa akong ginikanan nga moapil ko aning Beta Sigma

Omega Phi (BSOP) tungod kay basin ila kung kasab-an og paundangon ko
sa pag skwela.” (P8, SS28)

Chapter V

FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This research delved on reasons of teenagers in joining Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP).

Findings

The researchers found out that teenagers joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) because

of curiosity, to experience being a member of a fraternity, to help the people and community

through engaging their selves to programs Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP). Furthermore,

teenagers joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP) for they were influenced by their father, friends

and classmate this fraternity. Majority of the teenagers do not ask permission from their parents

to join Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP).

Conclusion

The researchers concluded that the reason of teenager of joining this fraternity is very

advantages because all of them want to help our community and that is the reason why they

joined Beta Sigma Omega Phi (BSOP). The researcher concluded that asking permission for

parents is very important because the parents knows the negative effect of joining fraternity.

Recommendations

11
Based from the findings and conclusion, the researchers recommend the following:

1. The parents should give some advices to their children to avoid joining the

fraternity.

2. Teenager must be aware of the positive and negative effect of joining the fraternity

for their future.

3. The researchers should make a quantitative research to finalist the reason of the

teenagers on joining the fraternity.
