Design of Superstructure
1. General Features
It is a two lane, five span PSC balanced cantilever bridge over river Wami at a height of
approximately 50 m from bed level. The span configuration is 75 m+ 3x120 m +75 m. All
spans are resting on POT/PTFE bearings proposed over piers. Expansion joints are provided
at either end. In original DPR, bridge superstructure construction was proposed with
segmental construction. Now the document design has been modified with cast in situ
construction as per the request from the client.
2. Analysis
The main bridge has been analysed for various loads for construction stage as well as at
service condition stage.
In Construction stage analysis at each stage , weight of form traveller, cast in situ segment
weight, PSC tendon load, construction live load and wind load have been considered.
At service stage all dead loads, superimposed loads, wearing coat, traffic Live Load,
temperaure gradient loads, wind transverse and vertical loads have been considered.
There are more number of stages from pier cap casting to laying wearing coat. Each stage
cycle period for preparation formwork, reinforcement cage preparaion, casting segment
and stressing has been considered as 10 days.
All construction loads, dead load, live load, wind load , tempearture load details considered
as per BS-5400 code provisions or other relevant codes. Construction stage and service
stage analysis have been done using MIDAS-CIVIL software. Short term loasses like friction,
slip , elastic shortening and long term losses like creep, shrinkage and relaxation have been
considered.
Differential settlement between pier supports 6 mm has been considered in the analysis.
Stresses in concrete have been calculated at each construction stage and duing service
condition for top and bottom fibres of box. Similarly PSC cable stresses and elongation at
service condition have been tabulated.
Span deflections at end of each construction stage and during serive condtion have been
calcuated.
3. Input data
3.1 General data
Concrete
28 days compressive strength ( PSC Box , diaphragms) – fck’ =50 MPa
Coefficient of thermal Expansion of Concrete – 1.2 x 10-5 / 0 C
Elastic Modulus of concrete = 4800*sqrt (fck’)
Poisson’s ratio = 0.2
Unit wt. of concrete = 25 kN/m3
Untensioned Steel -
Untensioned steel shall be of deformed bars conforming to table 6 of BS5400-part 4.
Minimum yield stress of 460N/mm 2. The modulus of elasticity assumed 200 000
MPa.
Prestressing Steel
Prestressing steel shall be 15.2mm diameter 7 wire uncoated low relaxation strand
with minimum breaking stress 1860N/mm2 confirming to BS: 5896 provisions.
Nominal Diameter of a strand = 15.24 mm
Nominal Area of a strand = 140 mm2;
Ultimate stress: fpu= 1860 MPa;
Maximum jacking Stress: 0.80 fpu= 1375 MPa; (for post tensioned cables)
Modulus of elasticity: Ep= 195 000 MPa;
Relaxation Loss at 1000 hours under 0.70 fpu: ρ1000 = 2.5 %;
Friction Coefficient for internal Prestress: μ = 0.17rad-1;
Friction Coefficient for external Prestress: μ = 0.17 rad-1;
Wedge Draw-In or Slip for post-tensioning = 6 mm.
Wobble Coefficient: k = 0.002 m-1 (for internal PT only);

4 Load combination
The superstructure has been analysed for different loads acting on span for service Limit
state and ultimate limit state load combinations.
5. MODEL ANALYSIS
ANLAYSIS MODEL
Under Service Limit state conditions concrete stresses and span deflection have been
calculated for different load combinations and tabulated below.
Similarly Ultimate moment and shear force for different ULS combinations have been
arrived. These were verified against Ultimate Capacities calculated for the provided
concrete sections and HT steel and no tensioned steel.

Summation includes Self weight,, SDL(crash Barrier), SDL(wearing Coat)and Prestress with all
stage losses.
