Microsoft Azure will be a Leader in

Edge Computing and IoT

Lately I've been researching Microso 's impact on AI and future projects related to
artificial intelligence. While we hear a lot about Google's DeepMind, Google Brain
and Google Health and their Cloud emphasis now, Microso Azure's evolution has
been transformative.

Google Cloud generated $8.9 billion in sales last year, a fraction of the $35 billion in
revenue that AWS brought in. Microso 's Cloud product Azure brought in between
those two. Intelligent cloud revenue was $11.9 billion last quarter, while Azure
revenue jumped 64% on a constant currency basis. But this number is bundled with
broader segments.

Where I believe Azure has incredible potential to scale is especially in Edge

computing. AI in the 4th industrial revolution doesn't just live in the Cloud, in many
situations, AI-based data crunching and decisions need to be made locally, on
devices that are close to the edge of the network.

Azure has an Edge

Azureʼs longstanding pursuit of leadership in hybrid cloud provides developers with

unique know-how toward building modern applications that span the edge and the
cloud. Having the lowest latency possible between the data and the decision is
critical, and here is where Microso is winning ground.

expanding set of connected systems and devices that gather and analyze data—
close to your users, the data, or both.

AI at the edge allows mission-critical and time-sensitive decisions to be made

faster, more reliably and with greater security. Azure is on the right track with
regards to offering AI in its hybrid-cloud. For instance, Azure Cognitive Services
give connected devices, bots and apps the ability to see, hear, respond, translate,
reason and more.

Microso to fortify Azure's tremendous growth against AWS and up-and-coming

rivals such as Google and Alibaba, needs to win with Edge computing and AI
services on the Cloud.

By moving certain workloads to the edge of the network, Microso can enable your
devices spend less time communicating with the cloud, react more quickly to local
changes, and operate reliably even in extended offline periods. This in 2020, is the
age of IoT now in cloud computing.

Evolution of Edge Computing Looks Exciting

While Apple dominates wearables, and Amazon dominates gadgets and the smart
home with Alexa, Microso needs to become an Edge Giant. The rush to push AI to
the edge is being fuelled by the rapid growth of smart devices at the edge of the
network—smartphones, smart watches and sensors placed on machines and
infrastructure. With 5G coming the hybrid cloud is all fair and well, but nothing to
compared to new advancements in Edge computing still to come.

Intelligent cloud and intelligent edge applications have evolved from primarily low-
compute IoT devices working with the cloud to powerful compute at the edge,
which requires a new modern hybrid application approach. Fundamentally, the
principles and technology needed for developing hybrid cloud applications are the
same as intelligent cloud and intelligent edge applications.

I personally have no relationship with Microso , but I'm of the belief this is one
area where Microso has a unique opportunity to differentiate itself from its
competitors. Microso needs to continue to integrate AI into its existing products,
but also augment its ability to provide IoT and Edge computing.

Azure IoT Edge is a good beginning. Currently it supports languages such as C, C#,
Java, Node.js, and Python.

Microsoft's Unique AI Hybrid Cloud Computing Opportunity

The cloud provides massively scaled computational power and very cheap memory
and storage. Now in the 5G era that needs to be faster and more secure. Microso 's
cybersecurity startup acquisitions come in very handy.

Microso is using AI to amplify human ingenuity, and in a world of an internet of

things, 5G and an evolving hybrid cloud, Microso needs to focus on next-gen Edge

using hardware architecture from Microso called Project Brainwave. It uses a
field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to make real-time AI calculations, giving you
the immediate insights you need to make critical business decisions.

What is Project Brainwave?

Project Brainwave is a deep learning platform for real-time AI inference in the

cloud and on the edge.

It's a so Neural Processing Unit (NPU), based on a high-performance field-

programmable gate array (FPGA), accelerates deep neural network (DNN)
inferencing, with applications in computer vision and natural language processing.

Project Brainwave looks promising in its ability to transform computing by

augmenting CPUs with an interconnected and configurable compute layer
composed of programmable silicon. You can read more about Project Brainwave
here.

In recent days Tesla's stock was skyrocketing in the perception that its vehicles are
like AI-powered smart machines. Now Microso Azure can build out AI at the Edge
on devices. Microso is already a leader in the “Intelligent Cloud” segment, but
even more importantly, what can it become?

Alfred. Hendriks , It’s sooo important to ensure tech is safe , I have recently written an essay 37m
on the development brain and neurodegenerative diseases ( based on IPSC models for
studying disease- instead of animal model ), it’s too important to ensure that there is enough
research in this area , “ exposome “ affects our health so much and in the case of fetal
development even more #responsible tech development
